Bears Sign Peppers to 6-year Deal
Nothing like adding more challenges to our depleted o-line. I feel sorry for Rodgers:

Re: Bears Sign Peppers to 6-year Deal
I'm curious how the deal is structured. Did the Bears give him a ton the first year in case a cap is in place in the new CBA?
Odds are they'll have overpaid, but i still wish he wasn't in our division.

Let's just hope the 5-6 games Peppers actually tries aren't against the Packers.

I heard $40 million guaranteed over the first 3 years.....I also heard they may have been bidding against themselves.

That's the case though every first day of free agency, the top free agent gets overpaid as a team throws huge money at the guy so he won't leave and go shopping himself to other teams.
I'm just curious if the bulk of the guaranteed money is in the first year so in case a cap comes with the new CBA, then the Bears protect themselves a bit from a major cap hit down the road.
On one hand i hope Peppers never comes close to living up to the contract and the Bears end up regretting it big time, but i can't say i like having to face him twice a year, especially if we have a shaky LT this season.

Re: Bears Sign Peppers to 6-year Deal
For all the good TT has done for this team he's really put us in a bind with the offensive line situation. We now have 2 elite pass rushers in our division and no proven starter at LT or RT. It becomes easier to see why Clifton is holding out for top dollar as this is one of those rare times where the player does indeed have some leverage. We need him back badly.

If it had been the Packers who just gave Peppers that contract I'd be irate.Peppers is still a solid player but he's nothing special,as a Packer fan this signing doesn't phase me one bit.

While I agree that the contract is pretty ridiculous, I don't understand how you see him as just a solid player.
Seeing as how guys like Ogunleye and Stylez G. White looked like all-stars against us last season, I am very concerned about facing Peppers. Especially if we don't have a legit LT now that Clifton is gone.

Re: Bears Sign Peppers to 6-year Deal
Peppers is on the way down. The guy plays with no motivation anymore. Im not concerned with the O-line situation. This is a very deep draft in that department.
I was high Peppers earlier but what were the tenders to get him from Carolina? A 1st and 3rd. They are banking on him to lead this already old D that is on the decline. Dumb move honestly.

I've watched some Panthers games the past few seasons.
Like I said he's solid,he's not a bad player but he's nothing special plus he's 30 years old. This signing doesn't make me look at the Bears any different,we'll still kick their ass both times we play them like we did last year.
It almost seem like people are stuck on the hype with Julius Peppers like it's still 2003.OMG a rookie with 12 sacks and he used to play basketball OMG OMG he's the next big thing in the NFL!!
I bought into that hype back in 2003 too but aside from not living up to the hype it's 2010 now and like I said the guy is 30 years old.

Peppers didn't even play hard every game in a contract year. Now he's got a boatload of guaranteed cash.
I'm against picketing but I don't know how to show it.

Yea they overpaid him and yea Peppers has a history of taking games off. That said, even with his inconsistent play, he's had double digit sack totals in 6 of his 8 seasons, including 25 the last two. His fellow defensive lineman were terrible, offenses didn't have to focus on anyone else. His amount of QB pressures besides sack totals is vastly higher than anything the Bears had. Having to face him twice a year will make it harder on our offense, especially if he's in a i'm going to really bring it mode in any games we face them.
I'm plenty fine with Ted not going after Peppers, but i'd certainly have preferred that he signed out of our division. For all his inconsistencies, Peppers had more sacks than Dwight Freeney the last two years and among 4-3 ends, only Allen had more sacks the last two years. Chicago has all kinds of problems on offense with Cutler, a bad line, and no receivers, but if we are in a close game with them next year, i'd much rather have Alex Brown trying to disrupt our passing game than Peppers.

I hear what you're saying. He's always taken plays off, and im hoping with guaranteed money for a few years he takes even more off. And I know him alone won't bring the Bears D back to dominating people again. But my concern is with the health of A-rod. like i mentioned, we made Stylez G. White look good, and if i do recall, Peppers gave Rodgers a lot of problems when we played them two years ago

Re: Bears Sign Peppers to 6-year Deal
Whether this contract ever comes back to haunt the Bears will ride as much on what the new CBA is like as much as his play.
If say there is no cap in the next CBA, there is no big harm to the Bars if Peppers is only mediocre.
If there is a cap in the next CBA, it's hard to tell right now how exactly this contract will effect the Bears down the road.
Plus, with this being an uncapped year, if the new CBA contains a similar cap to prior years, does that mean any guaranteed money Peppers got for this season can't be prorated against the cap in future seasons?
These details will have huge ramifications for the Bears going forward given the size of Peppers contract.

And now he's 30. 1, maybe 2 good years and the decline begins.

Re: Bears Sign Peppers to 6-year Deal
I have not watched much of Peppers, ever. Although I have now read much about him. As far as overpaying? I don't care...it's not my money, I live in Colorado and won't be buying tickets. This is the year to overspend if any. Sure, there are payroll concerns...but the Bears throw crap money at their own bad players like Vasher, might as well throw the money at a proven player. Anyway, here is an article about his taking plays off that everyone seems to overhype.

Re: Bears Sign Peppers to 6-year Deal
There are numerous reports of the guy taking plays off, including reports done by the Panthers for the past 2 seasons. Just because 1 writer says the opposite doesn't really mean anything. Oh, and pointing to the fact that Cutler is a bum when he was acquired by CHI doesn't give the author any more credibility, anyone who has seen him play knew he'd bust in CHI.
