No more Brewer means Jazz a 3 point shooting team??

Post#1 » by jazzfan1971 » Wed Mar 10, 2010 8:57 am

I gots no other explanation. I've never seen the Jazz rely on the 3 point shot as much as I've seen in teh last 5 games. In fact, I doubt that they have since they've been in Utah.

What I wonder is if the players demanded this of the coach.

There is a story about the Jazz back in the day. Some of the players wanted to run. So they went to the coach and asked to be unleashed as a running team. 5-10 games later Stockton went to the coach and asked how long Sloan was going to allow them to lose games. The running game stopped.

I wonder if the same thing isn't happening except for 3 point shooting.

Except this time, it seems to be working.

I'm sure we're going to have a game where those long shots will lose the game for us, but, I think overall we'll be a stronger team if we add that offensive firepower. Especially since we really aren't a team that can lock down opponents. Sometimes we're going to just need to outscore them. And having a 3 point threat will surely help when we face large teams like LA.

So, if this is just an experiment, I think it's been a success. I hope we keep taking those 3 pointers. Although I cringe to see CJ jacking them up from 3 feet behind the line (even if it goes in).
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

The Jazz are shooting 19.3 three's per game since Brewer was traded. That's more than 5 per game higher than their season average. And in these games since Brewer has been traded, the Jazz have only won once when shooting less than 20 three's.

Submitting this to Locke, maybe I'll get a shout out tomorrow.

Both Korver and Okur are among the best 3pt shooters for their positions in the league. Boozer doesnt shoot threes but he can post and make jumpers which spreads the floor really good. And D-Will, Miles and Kirilenko are all capable of making threes as well. There is no reason for you to not be a three point shooting team.

Not only threes obviously, but still...

Where are all the folks who criticized the Jazz for trading Brewer? I dont see you in here criticizing now....

Brewer was nowhere near worth the $5.5+ million we saved by trading him.

^You bring up a great point. Kudos, but the beauty of what's happening with this team over the last few games is that they AREN'T relying on the 3-point shot. They aren't plays for it, they aren't focused on it, they are simply finding it in the offense. They're shots that have always been there, but now the players seem to either have a green light to shoot them, or more confidence to shoot them. Likely both. Either way, this may be what this team needed to step onto the elite team stage.

Hopefully this will also translate into a better understanding of how to defend the corner 3. Which has always been the Jazz kryptonite.

CAN'T WAIT FOR THE PLAYOFFS!!!!!!

Most people were okay with trading Brewer...it was trading Brewer for nothing (nothing that could help on the court, anyway) in the middle of a playoff run that had people ticked off. It may still come back to haunt us...we are dangerously thin.

We have the guns, and they are firing true right now... actually I wouldn't mind seeing a more fundamental shift for the 3, but let's not go overboard with it. I like our bread and butter... let's keep the 3 as jelly.

And LoserX... thanks for pointing out what people just don't seem to understand.

As long as we don't fall in love with it and go to it at bad times in games, I am way down with raining the treys. Good open shots are a must. This is also good to keep teams on their heels a bit when playing us, as I'm sure hardly any of them have scouted us as a 3 point threat.

On a somewhat related note Kyle Korver is now statistically the best 3pt shooter in the NBA.

By a full 6% too. For the season he only has 1.3 makes a game, but for his last 10 he has 2 a game, which would be good for top 15 in the NBA if he sustained that for the whole season.
