Defensive Stop Percentage

To calculate Defensive Stop Percentage the formula is Defensive Stops (DREB + BLK + STL + Opponents TO)/Opponents Offensive Possesions (Opponents FA + Opponents TO). This that could be used to determine the best defensive teams. It's kind of like a more advanced FG%. I compare to batting average and on base percentage in baseball. Here's an example using the Cavs and the Knicks.

Knicks: DS= 3563 (1931 def. rebounds + 449 steals + 262 blocks + 921 opponents TO) / OOP= (5313 fga + 921 oponents TO). This equals 57%.

Cavs: DS= 3782 ( 2136 def. rebounds + 362 steals + 448 blocks + 836 TO) / OOP= (5237 FGA + 836 TO).
This equals 62%.

Think of adding Opp Offensive rebounds as well?

You should check out Dean Oliver's book, "Basketball On Paper." In it, Dean lays out a method for calculating defensive stop percentage.

You may also want to take a look at the formula used by most basketball sabermetricians for calculating possessions -- .976 * FGA + .44 * FTA - oreb + tov.

Teams who have players that block shots toward teammates instead of swaying them as far as possible should be rewarded somehow.

i thought about that but i think that having to have to offense reset or put up a quick shot counts as a stop.
