We need production from our 3rd round pick.

What position are we targeting with our 3rd round pick?

We need a guy that can start, or heavily produce. None of these Chicago red shirt Bears. I want and need production from this pick. The two positions I'm looking at are safety and offensive line.

Julius Peppers seems to be a legit target. If he wasn't, the D line would be in this discussion. Peppers isn't exactly a long term solution, but who knows what happens after this year anyways. This whole damn thing might just explode.

Now back to the two positions..

Safety - its obvious. Mike Brown left a hole in center field so gaping wide even I could drive a titleist pro down the middle. I don't have many favorites here but I have some candidates to keep an eye out for. Now warning..please don't jump on me for these guys, they're bound to jump around and leap frog each other with draft position, so they are just hopefuls. Hopeful they'll be there with our 3rd round pick.

SAFETY

Morgan Burnett - Lovie's type of safety. This is Willy Mays in center field. Ball hawk, large body, and completely football instinctable. Yes I just made up that phrase. If we could snag him, I'd love it, but this guy has the potential to rocket to the first round. Hope he doesn't and he falls to us in the 3rd, but right now he's floating between the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

Chad Jones - Since Calvin Johnson will probably always be on the Detroit Lions, having a 6'3'' 230 pound safety might be a good thing. Not to mention, he's probably the most atheltic player on his team, and this team, it isn't U of I, its LSU. A team loaded with ubber athletes. He's a potential/athleticism pick(which I don't like), but you can't ignore that size with the knowledge of him being the most athletic person on a team full of athletes. I'd rather have a guy that isn't an all out athlete but an awesome football player, but this is one of those guys that you can't pass. Plus, I'll admit, Lovie has always done a good job with the safeties, when he's had some talent. i.e. Falafel and Chris Harris

Reshad Jones - If this guy was from Vandy, he might qualify as a Chicago Bears special. He was entered int he 09 draft but pulled out last minute. Would've been a decent pick last year, but better now. Georgia didn't do too much better the following year with him staying but I think he made the right decision. He's a football player type over the freakish athleticism type. I like. Not as fast as you'd like your safety to be but his insticts make up for it. He also red shirted his freshmen year, so he's matured. Big guy, and a great fit. His weaknesses are deep single coverage and his stregnths are split field assignments (cover 2) and stopping the running game. Another guy with first round rocket-up-through-the-combine potential, hopefully not for the Bears.

I really hope those three don't all rocket up to the first round, but one of them is bound to.

Jon Asamoah - Now you might think this is some homer town brew, but it isn't. This guy is legit. A local guy, U of I, but he can explode off the line. Hes reported to have a 5 flat 40, which is lightning for 6'5'' 315.
If any of you saw blind side this past winter you probably see where I'm coming from on this...
He's instinctively a care taker.. a protector. He was originally offered a scholorship to NIU as well as a few out of state schools but waited on other offers. After U of I made their pitch he signed almost immediately so he could easily make that 57 straight-shot-to-Champaign to take care of his ill father. He's also been reported to help several teammates with school studies so I'd guess he's not a Devin Hester type between his ears.

This is the one offensive lineman I think we could pick up in the 3rd round and could start and make an impact. If he's not there, I think we go safety.

Now what position would you like to fill? Any candidates in mind?

Actually no, I've been following him since his last year at FSU.

What was interesting about the interview with Mike and Mike? Anything good?

They were talking about his Rhodes Scholarship, time he's spent at Oxford, that he's fully commited to playing in the NFL and that he understands that teams may be worried about taking him early because he plans to become a surgeon after he's done in the NFL and still has like 9 years left of school which could cause him to leave after only a few years in the NFL if things aren't going that great. They also asked him which questions were asked at the interview for the scholarship. If I remember correctly he one of the questions was what were the last 3 books you've read and what were the next 3 books you plan to read and something along the lines of what would you do if you were Obama (right after we has elected) to correct the healthcare system, etc.

I love Myron Rolle myself. He's my type of player. Heady, natural instincts, quick learner, and a "Rolle". Those are always decent.
I highly doubt he's there in the 3rd round. He's first round talent, with a one in a lifetime brain. If he is, I'd love him.
Plus, I have a soft spot...my sister head brain tumors when she was young, so mad props for the Neurosurgeon thing.

Now if we could turn this pick into Boldin somehow, [/thread]

If we can draft Afalava in the 6th and start him right away, sure;y we could find someone twice as good in the 3rd round. It's simple math!

I'm a big LSU guy, so naturally I love Chad Jones. But that being said, I really don't think he'll be that great of a pro. He has the same issues as Taylor Mays, only not as good. He looks completely lost at times and will likely get burnt on a daily basis in the NFL. I seriously doubt he falls to the third round, but if he did, I would still take him and just hope he figures everything out.

Iowa fan here so I'm obviously biased but It's possible Kyle Calloway could be there for our third rd pick. We really need a RT and I think he will be solid(as most Iowa OL's are) in the NFL.

Also, One of my good, childhood friends is Pat Angerer's Older brother and he has said the the Bears have contacted him. I know that may not mean a lot but I think he could be had in the 4th or 5th rd and could be good insurance/apprentice to Urlacher.

Jeff Dickerson had an interesting article. Not much to it, but I listen when he says stuff.

While many NFL scouts attended Nebraska's pro day to see former Cornhuskers defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh, safety Larry Asante remains an attractive option for the Chicago Bears in the third or possibly fourth round.

According to Omaha.com, Asante ran a 4.55 40-yard dash on Thursday, considerably better then his official 4.63 time at the NFL Combine last month.

"They (scouts) told me they wanted to see me in the 4.5 range," Asante told the Web site, "and that's what they got.'

The Web site estimated that 24 NFL scouts were in attendance on Thursday in Lincoln.

Just talked to someone who was at Georgia Tech's pro day and he had some interesting things to say, Bears-related. Lovie Smith was there, and so was another defenisve coach, and they were "real interested" in Morgan Burnett. They spent at least 20 minutes afterwards talking to Burnett and his agent and they didn't watch any other player there.

Because the Bears aren't savvy enough to smokescreen, that sure sounds promising for Mr. Burnett--if he's still around in the 3rd. Which after his strong showing is a slimmer possibility.

I'm already ecstatic, speechless, and in shock about our off season but Morgan Burnett would just make my mouth fall off.
