A meaningless game just turned into something special for Will and a whole lot of Pistons fans. Something tells me if you leave Will a message in the comments, he might just see it.

Patterson calls foul on Bing for trying to steal Pistons
Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson is taking a shot at Mayor Dave Bing for trying to lure the Detroit Pistons downtown. Patterson on Friday lectured Bing on regional cooperation. But turnabout is fair play, so Patterson said he's begun efforts to lure the Detroit Red Wings to The Palace of Auburn Hills. "I call that poaching," said Patterson on Friday. "I thought we're all supposed to be regional players, but that's not developing good relationships when you deliberately" try to lure the Pistons to Detroit. The volley came after Bing told media executives on Thursday he hopes the Pistons to move back to the city and wants a new arena for both the Pistons and Red Wings. Bing, who played for the Pistons when the franchise was downtown, met Thursday with Tom Wilson, an executive for Wings owners Ilitch Holdings who is charged with finding a new home for the hockey team. Bing's spokeswoman, Karen Dumas, would only say the meeting was of a "personal nature." Still, it prompted Patterson to phone Wilson on Friday and announce that "we're opening negotiations" for the Wings to move to Auburn Hills. "We'll take them out here for six years," Patterson said, until the Wings find a permanent facility.

The flap comes amid uncertainty about both teams and follows Bing's efforts to improve relations with the suburbs. They were strained under former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, but Bing has repeatedly reached out to suburban officials. During a Bloomfield Hills breakfast last month, he asked suburbanites for ideas to help turn the city around. Bing reiterated his commitment to regionalism in early March at a Downtown Detroit Partnership luncheon. But Patterson said Bing's remarks don't make him a good neighbor and he doesn't appreciate that the mayor didn't reach out to him before speaking out about the Pistons. "Bing didn't like it when Mayor Fouts of Warren went after GM," Patterson said, referring to Fouts' efforts to lure General Motors from the Renaissance Center last year. What's more, Patterson said he's not "buying this 'bring them home' line" from Bing because if "he wants them to go home then he wants them to go to Fort Wayne." The Pistons were founded in the northern Indiana city but left for Detroit in 1957. The team left for Pontiac in 1978 before settling into The Palace in 1988.

Dumas, Bing's spokeswoman, said "the mayor's response to a comment (Thursday) is what has sparked this whole conversation and barrage of coverage. There are no formal plans or discussions." Dumas said to "continue repeating this ... is causing unnecessary misunderstanding. It's time to move to another topic." Matt Dobek, vice president of public relations for the Pistons, declined comment. Pete Auger, the city manager of Auburn Hills, said he's not privy to any serious conversations about the Pistons leaving his city but "obviously we would like the Pistons to stay in Auburn Hills. In the spirit of regionalism, we want to see the Pistons remain in Michigan." Auger said it "makes good business sense" for the successful Pistons franchise to remain in a "championship city like Auburn Hills." Still, Patterson said he's taking the threat of the Pistons leaving "fairly seriously" but promises to now play hard ball with Detroit. The death last March of longtime Pistons owner Bill Davidson and his widow's intentions to sell the team have increased speculation about its fate. The Wings' lease with the city and Joe Louis Arena expires in June. Patterson said he believes the Wings and the Ilitch family "gave up on their lease at Joe Louis Arena." But Patterson said he doesn't believe Michigan's economy would allow public dollars to finance a new stadium

Pistons 101, Wizards 87: Will Bynum has career-best 20 assists
The media gathered around the hero of the evening. Pistons point guard Will Bynum looked up sheepishly as everybody gathered to get his thoughts in his career-high 20 assist night.

Then a jokester piped from the peanut gallery. "Hey, I got two assists," Tayshaun Prince cracked. The dressing room broke into laughter on a rare fun evening for the Pistons. They rode the coattails of several players while pounding out a 101-87 victory over the Wizards on Friday night at The Palace. The loudest cheers were reserved for the 3-point shot by Ben Gordon that gave Bynum his 20th assist. The Pistons knew it might have been perceived as running up the score. But they didn't care. They wanted to give Bynum a well-deserved record.

It was the first time a Pistons player recorded 20 assists since Hall of Fame guard Isiah Thomas in 1985. "It means a lot," said Bynum, who grew up in Thomas' hometown of Chicago. "I grew up watching a lot of Isiah in the summer league. It was a great accomplishment." The Pistons shot 51.2 percent and placed five players in double figures. "Guys did a great job of hitting shots," Prince said. "It is tough being disrespectful but I think it (getting 20 assists) is something tough to do." Jason Maxiell, who at 6-foot-7 started at center, had 12 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots.

Slam dunks
Rodney Stuckey is expected to miss tonight's game and was not scheduled to play Friday night. He spent the afternoon taking extra shooting.

Stuckey collapsed last week during a game at Cleveland and was taken to the Cleveland Clinic. He has not played since.

Doctors said there is no heart damage, and Kuester said he is not putting any pressure on Stuckey to play.

Pistons forward Charlie Villanueva defended the Nike Hyperizes shoe that has been criticized in trade magazines around the country. He also said reports the shoe was banned by trainer Arnie Kander are not true.

Kander told reporters he banned a shoe but would not name it. Villanueva continues to wear the shoe and said he will for the rest of the season.

"I think people are making too big of a deal out of it," Villanueva said.

Jason Maxiell takes advice from McDyess to heart
Jason Maxiell still hangs onto advice passed along to him by former Piston Antonio McDyess, who now plays for the San Antonio Spurs. He told Maxiell he needed to expand his game beyond dunks. He has.

Maxiell is playing the best basketball of his career although he is looking to be more consistent. He had another big night Friday with 12 points and 10 rebound during the Pistons 101-87 victory over the Washington Wizards. In his last nine games Maxiell has averaged 9.1 points and 9.0 rebounds and shot 57.8 percent from the field. "It is all about how I work in the summer," Maxiell said. "I am trying to expand my game. "McDyess said it is not just about dunks that makes a career. I took what he said to heart and I tried to do that."

Pistons coach John Kuester is finding more playing time for Maxiell because of his energy and production. Kuester said Jonas Jerebko and Maxiell are his two high-energy guys and he wants to make sure they are rewarded with playing time. "He has been pretty consistent in giving me high energy," Kuester said. "It is refreshing because he competes every time he is out there. "He has some Ben Wallace qualities out there." One flaw Maxiell has is finishing in close. He says he is working on that and will work on his left hook during the offseason.

Gordon's threes sink to new low Pistons Basketball
Last year's first-round playoff series between the Celtics and the Bulls became an instant classic. It is remembered for multiple overtimes, late-game buzzer-beaters and a breakout performance from Chicago's rookie point guard Derrick Rose. But go back and look more closely at that series and the most valuable Bull was arguably Ben Gordon, who needed nothing more than a few inches to get a shot off, who drained shot-clock dwindling threes for the better part of two weeks, who led the team in scoring during that series with 24 points a game.

The Pistons were hoping that clutch-shooting two-guard was the player they were getting when they signed him in the off-season. At the moment, though, Gordon is suffering through his worst shooting season of his career. Never has he shot below 40% from the three-point line. So far this season he is converting only 29% of his threes. Against the Wizards on Friday, he scored 17 points and shot 2-for-5 from beyond the arc.

His coach said Friday that he needs to simply keep shooting. "He's getting good looks," said John Kuester. "I want him to continue to shoot the ball. That is the bottom line. Continue to shoot and shoot more." Gordon has struggled with injuries this year, and the missed time because of ankle and groin injuries has certainly hurt his rhythm. So has the continuous lineup shuffling around him. Rodney Stuckey's collapse last week in Cleveland is only the latest example of the injuries and illnesses that have vexed the team this season.
