Former Pistons draft pick Darko Milicic playing but still not happy in NBA
The Minnesota Timberwolves have followed through on their promise to give extended minutes to former Pistons player Darko Milicic after acquiring him from the New York Knicks at the trade deadline. But Milicic has not changed his mind about returning to Europe to play following the end of the current season. “This isn't how my career was supposed to look,” Milicic told Paul Forrester of SI.com for a story Thursday. “Being a defensive guy, all of this time not playing, that's not how I saw my career, that's not how I enjoy playing.”

Milicic has averaged 5.1 points and 5.8 rebounds in 22 minutes per game since the trade to Minnesota. He had a season-high 12 points to go with five rebounds Friday night in a loss to San Antonio. Milicic averaged less than 10 minutes per game in eight games with the Knicks this season but had not appeared in a game since November before being sent to the Timberwolves.

The Pistons play the final game of the season April 14 at Minnesota, which means Milicic could play the final game of his NBA career against the team that drafted him.

Pistons Look to Rebound vs Wizards
Detroit Pistons vs Washington Wizards
This matchup couldn’t have come at a better time for the inconsistent Pistons. Detroit just came off of a thumping by the Jazz on Wednesday, in which a 14-0 run in the 2nd quarter doomed the Pistons. The Pistons have enjoyed success against the Wizards this season, owning the season series at 3-0. The Wizards are coming off a loss againt the Rockets Tuesday, a team the Pistons managed to beat on Sunday.

The Wizares are a new look team without the big three of Jamison-Butler-Arenas. They are in rebuilding mode with no obvious focal point. Since the dismantling, Al Thornton and Andray Boatche have become the biggest contributors on offense – by default. The prize they received for all their trading is Josh Howard and he tore his ACL in his first few apperances. Randy Foye and Mike Miller, two players who have had various forms of success in the NBA are little more than role players at this point in the season. Inconsistent gives them too much credit, as they’re more anemic.

The Pistons should be hungry for a win against the Wizards which would also give them a 4-0 record against them this season, the only thing undefeated about their season. While both teams have their injury concerns, Detroit should take advantage of the matchup and frustrate the Washington starters. Detroit should have no problem closing out the season series and have some momentum for their matchup against Atlanta Saturday.

Game #66: At Hawks, no TV
The Pistons (23-42, 7-24 road) will be in Atlanta to take on the Hawks (41-23). The tip will be at 7 pm est from the Philips Arena. The game can be viewed locally on…it can’t. Follow George Blaha’s call here or on WWJ 950.
Hawks’ snapshot
Home record: 25-7
Last game: 3/11 (Thurs) – W 105-99 @ Wizards
Last 10: 7-3
Streak: Won 1
Vs. Pistons: Nov 29th Atl (88) @ Det (94)
Injuries: Maurice Evans (illness: day-to-day)

First thing’s first. It is patently ridiculous that this game is not televised for Pistons’ fans. Shame on Fox Sports Detroit for dropping the game as well as shame on every other network for not picking it up. The Pistons will be without Ben Wallace and Rodney Stuckey again. That fact gives at least two guys something to play for. Will Bynum, who is coming off a historic 20 assist game, is getting his chance to show off his point guard prowess. Then there’s Jason Maxiell. Although Max has improved his scoring touch, by many accounts he has not really built upon his previous four season in red, white, and Pistons’ blue. In the 5 games Jason has started for the injured Ben Wallace he has upped his productivity (9.4 pts, 10.6 rebs) with the increase in playing time. Jason pulled a career high 16 boards in a win against Houston and has had double-doubles in each of his last two games. The Hawks as a team still have much to play for. They’re currently tied for the 3rd playoff seed with the Boston Celtics.

ALSO OF NOTE: Ben Wallace listed as questionable (knee) … The Hawks are a 12 point favorite … Playing defense makes Darko Milicic sad … Where does Chauncey rank amongst the all-time great point guards … Jamal Crawford leads the NBA in 20-point games off the bench w/ 26 … Crawford is 5-23 lifetime against the Pistons … Joe Johnson is averaging 21.4 for the Hawks … The Hawks are on a four game home winning streak … Pistons are on a 5 game road losing streak … Will Bynum’s 20 assist game was only the 3rd in the NBA this season … The Pistons outrebounded the Hawks 53-27 n their last meeting, Ben had 18 … Stuckey scored 23 in last meeting … Happy birthday to former Piston (1987) Kurt Nimphius … Patterson miffed at Bing for wooing Pistons …

New Orleans Hornets' Chris Paul could return in 7-10 days
Three-time All-Star point guard Chris Paul was medically cleared Friday to begin running, and he could be a week to 10 days from returning to the New Orleans Hornets’ lineup.

Paul required arthroscopic surgery on his left knee on Feb. 4, and it has forced him to miss 20 consecutive games.

Paul participated in Friday morning’s shootaround at the New Orleans Arena. Hornets Coach Jeff Bower said they will continue to evaluate Paul’s progress to determine whether his work load will increase or stay at the same level. But Bower declined to give a set date on Paul’s return. “It will be the regular transition from half-speed to three-quarters to full speed before he returns, ’’ Bower said. ”We’re optimistic.’’

The Pistons vs The Hawks
The 23-42 Pistons are in Atlanta on a second game of a back to back to take on the 41-23 Hawks tonight. Unfortunately this game will not be televised locally, so the only way you are going to catch it is with NBA League pass or by watching online.

Can Will “Thrill” us again tonight? I’m sure he can, Bynum had one of his best shooting performances this season in the last game against the Hawks, scoring 19 points off the bench while making 8 of 13 attempts. As for Ben Wallace, he’s still listed as day to day and as we know Rodney has no timetable on his return.

Tip is at 7:00 pm EST with the radio broadcast over at 950 AM WWJ or follow the action online over at NBA.com.

These five teams know tales of woe all too well
1. DETROIT PISTONS
CURRENTLY: 22-41, fourth place, Central Division, 26.5 games behind Cleveland
HOW THEY GOT HERE: Fired coach Flip Saunders in 2008; hired Michael Curry in 2008; traded Chauncey Billups for Allen Iverson in 2008; death of owner Bill Davidson in 2009; implosion of local economy, injuries to Rip Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince

GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES: G Ben Gordon, rookie Fs Jonas Jerebko and Austin Daye, third-year G Rodney Stuckey, coach John Kuester Only the Spurs had a longer run at the top in recent years than Detroit, which made six straight Eastern Conference finals between 2002 and 2008. But now team president Joe Dumars has to rebuild. The Pistons could have been players in the Summer of 2010. With Iverson's $23 million coming off the cap last summer, Detroit could have opted to roll over its room and taken place alongside New York, New Jersey, Miami, Chicago and the Clippers in vying for the league's elite free agents. But Dumars opted to strike last summer, when there was far less competition, for Gordon and Bucks forward Charlie Villaneuva, laying out around $90 million combined for the duo, and said that Gordon was amenable to coming off the bench so that Hamilton could continue starting. But both Hamilton and Gordon have been injured for much of the season, eliminating the Pistons' depth, and now Detroit is locked into this roster for at least another year. The March, 2009 death of "Mr. D" -- Bill Davidson, the beloved owner, at 86 -- has left some decisions in limbo. His widow, Karen, has assumed control of the team, but is entertaining offers to sell, which always creates uncertainty about how aggressive a team can be in re-shaping its roster. Add to this the devastating impact the recession has had on Detroit -- the jobless rate in the Detroit-Warren-Livonia metropolitan area in December of 2009 was 14.9 percent, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics -- and what was the league's top attendance in six of seven seasons through 2009 (including 259 straight sellouts) has dropped to eighth. But Dumars hopes his team's stay among the NBA's dregs is short-lived."We're going to have a good pick," he said. "We'll defnintely be in the trade market. And we plan to be in the midlevel free-agent range. We would love to add some frontcourt presence (this summer). We just feel like we have to add a big to our team. That's what's missing. In two of those three ways -- Draft, trades and free agency -- we feel like there's a possibility that we can get a big. Obviously, it's not going to be at the mid-level." Dumars wouldn't say, but it's clear that he'll have to use Prince, with an expiring contract for 2010-11, along with a couple of his young pieces, as his primary bait to find that big man. Hamilton, with two years left on his contract, will be harder to move. But if he has to stay in Detroit while the team is retrofitted, there's no better example of how to handle that with class than his team's president of basketball operations, who taught Grant Hill and others how to be pros as the last man standing from the 1989-90 title teams.

OUTLOOK: Dumars built a championship team through shrewd free agent signings and trades, and has always been able to find top-flight coaching to go with an excellent staff, including the league's most innovative athletic trainer, Arnie Kander. He certainly deserves more than a year to try and do it again.

A Bright Future
When Cleveland’s season ended in the Eastern Conference finals last year, GM Danny Ferry, coach Mike Brown and their staffs analyzed their ouster at Orlando’s hands and came to one firm conclusion: The Cavs needed more size on the perimeter to challenge the shooters of teams that could spread the floor and launch 3-pointers. “We talked about how we had to get longer and bigger on the perimeter,” said Steve Hetzel, the video coordinator for the Cavs at the time and now player development coach for the Pistons. “We felt our smaller guards rotating out to Orlando’s shooters hurt us. If we’re having to double Dwight (Howard) in the post and rotate out with a 6-foot guard, they were just shooting right over us.”

Whatever advantages the Cavs have over the Pistons – and the list certainly starts with a certain No. 23 – perimeter size isn’t one of them. At least not among the players with whom Hetzel works most closely, the three rookies Joe Dumars snagged from the 2009 draft – Austin Daye, DaJuan Summers and Jonas Jerebko, all of them given first-round grades by the Pistons.

Hetzel wouldn’t be one to challenge that assessment, not after spending the past eight months working with them since being handpicked by John Kuester, then an assistant on Brown’s staff, to accompany him to Detroit. “We already have that length here, just waiting,” Hetzel said. “Now we’ve just got to find the time for them to get better. They’re going to make rookie mistakes right now, but it’s been a really good year for me, getting to work with all three of those kids.” Over the next three days, we’ll look at each of the three rookies through Hetzel’s eyes.

Jonas Jerebko – In the tight-knit community of NBA coaches, there are even tighter subcultures among assistant coaches or video coordinators or player development coaches. The development coaches that Hetzel, a 1999 graduate of Allen Park High and subsequently a Michigan State grad who got his start under Tom Izzo, talks to first rave about Jerebko’s feet. “When I talk to the people I know around the league, what they see is his foot speed,” Hetzel said. “They say he’s got ‘tennis feet’ – just quick, choppy feet. Jonas makes what we call those great hustle plays, but it doesn’t deal with heart as much as your reaction speed and the ground you can cover. The great thing about Jonas is he’s 6-11 and he’s got feet like a guard. It was that footwork that was part of what made Pistons strength coach Arnie Kander, in the battery of tests he administers to draft candidates during their predraft workouts, label Jerebko as “by far” the best athlete he tested of the 50-plus who came through The Palace practice facility last spring. Growing up in Sweden, Jerebko’s parents, Chris and Elaine, led him to play a number of sports – hockey, handball, soccer – and all of them contributed to his unique balance and superb foot speed. “He loves to show off kicking the ball around, like a Hacky Sack, volleying the ball to himself,” Hetzel said. “Arnie has him warm up with a football somedays before practice and he just looks at me, like, man, get me a soccer ball out here and I won’t look so stupid.”

Hetzel saw the potential in Jerebko when he first began working with him last summer and is now seeing some of the same things appearing in games that he glimpses in their tireless work before and after practices and the workouts Hetzel and the young players put in before every game. “Jonas’ (playing) time initially was because of injuries and it was the way he played – his hustle, his hard work and his effort, especially on the defensive end and his offensive rebounding. With any player in the NBA, with time, you start to figure out the pace at which you play. It took him a while to figure out how to do that, but the thing about Jonas is he’s 6-11 and he can shoot. That’s going to keep you on the floor. And now his athleticism, where he can put the ball on the floor for one or two dribbles with either hand. He’s got a natural right hook that I’m sure he’s worked on all his life. He’s just got to find a way to get to that hook. “As far as his potential, I don’t see a ceiling right now. He has gotten so much better since the beginning of the year. His mid-range jump shot has become consistent. He’s only going to get better. We did a lot of work in the summer when he first got here and he got a lot better in that first month. It’s been harder for him, with the minutes he plays, to put in real work during the season, as it is with any NBA player. But this summer will be a big one for him, just polishing up everything.”

Jerebko’s summer to-do list? “He’s got to have two moves in the post,” Hetzel said. “I want him to have a face-up game. The only time they throw him the ball is when he’s got a mismatch. With his size and ability to play the three/four, a lot of times, the way he runs the floor, he can get a mismatch. So I would like to see him immediately face up his man, use his jump shot as his weapon, and depending on how they play him, find his way to his hook. “I really believe that when you start out, you only need two moves. You need your move and then you need a counter. Once they know what you’re going to, then you need to go to something else. If you don’t have that, then pass it.” Hetzel sees in Jerebko an instinctive offensive rebounder that caused him to evoke Ben Wallace. “You just have to have an instinct to find the ball, watch the flight of the ball and go get it,” he said. “He has that instinct. He finds space, times his jumps right and if he can’t get the ball, he’ll tip it out. When the Pistons were really good, in their prime, the best back-tipper in the league was Ben Wallace. Jonas does a great job of that. And he also has become very good at following up and scoring. Any time you can put it right back in for two, it hurts (a defense) even more.”

Game Thread 64: Detroit Pistons at Atlanta Hawks
Tip: 7 p.m., NO TV
Probable Starters: DET - G: Will Bynum, Rip Hamilton; F: Tayshaun Prince, Jonas Jerebko; C: Jason Maxiell.
ATL - G: Mike Bibby, Joe Johnson; F: Josh Smith, Marvin Williams; C: Al Horford.

Notes: Unlike some people, I will not be offended by any Pistons reaching milestones tonight. Go get your money, Will Bynum. As for tonight's game against the Hawks, it's a mismatch lineup-wise. The Hawks are young, athletic and only kind of have positions -- most of the players they will put on the court for big minutes are do-it-all hybrids who can't really be defined by a position -- the Pistons don't really have a guard with the height/strength combination to bother Joe Johnson, they don't really have a forward athletic enough to contend with Josh Smith and with perimeter shooting from Mike Bibby, Johnson, Jamal Crawford and Marvin Williams, the Pistons could be in for a long night since closing out on shooters hasn't been a strength this season. The good news is the Hawks are prone to letdowns. They have been playing well lately, but there are games when Smith is content to sit on the perimeter rather than attack the basket. Johnson and Crawford can be a bit streaky too, so if one or the other struggles, the Pistons have a shot. Bad news: no TV tonight. So if anyone finds a good online stream, feel free to leave it in the comments. If I find one, I'll do the same.

Last Meeting: Rodney Stuckey and Will Bynum combined for 42 points and 12 assists in a Pistons win Nov. 29.

Cavs' Jamison expected to face Celtics
Cavaliers forward Antawn Jamison is expecting to play Sunday when Cleveland hosts the Boston Celtics in a game between division leaders.

Jamison missed Friday's win against Philadelphia because of a cyst behind his left knee. He said Saturday he thought he could have played against the 76ers, but team doctors advised him to rest. Jamison did not make the trip to Philadelphia.

He says the knee feels fine and there are no problems. Jamison is averaging 17 points and 7.5 rebounds since coming to Cleveland in a trade with Washington.

Spurs Sign Garrett Temple To 10-Day Contract
The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have signed guard Garrett Temple from the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the NBA Development League to a 10-day contract. Temple is the 23rd call-up of the 2009-10 D-League season.

The 6-6, 190-pound Temple has seen time this season with the Houston Rockets, Sacramento Kings and the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the D-League. Signed as an undrafted free agent by Houston on 9/22, he averaged 2.5 points and 0.3 assists in four preseason games with the Rockets before being waived on 10/21. Temple was allocated to Rio Grande Valley on 11/4 and averaged 14.9 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 30 games with the Vipers. He signed his first of two 10-day contracts with Houston on 2/8. In nine games with the Rockets he averaged 5.0 points and 1.6 rebounds in 13.1 minutes. On 3/3 Temple signed a 10-day contract with Sacramento. He averaged 2.2 points and 0.6 rebounds in 4.6 minutes with the Kings.

Temple averaged 6.7 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.6 assists over his four seasons at LSU. He left school as the Tigers all-time leader in games played (134), starts (131) and minutes played (4,432). Temple also ranked fourth in career assists (482), seventh in steals (191) and fourth in blocks (113) in school history. Temple will wear uniform #2.

Getting Down and Dirty for Lottery Balls: Pistons @ Hawks [Game Thread]
Detroit Pistons at Atlanta Hawks, Mar 13, 2010 6:00 PM CST
Game Tips at 7:00 EST
Detroit Pistons: 23-42 (7-24 home)
Atlanta Hawks: 41-23 (25-7 road)
Oppo Research
Given the make up of the Hawks' roster, it's no surprise that they are amongst the upper echelon in the league. They have a steady point guard in Bibby (who's actually having a down year), a reliable shooter in Joe Johnson, the human highlight reel and defensive prowess in Josh Smith, arguably the 6th Man of the Year in Jamal Crawford, and an All-Star* center in Al Horford. They're efficient for how slow they play -- they are one of the slowest paced teams (26th) in the league but rank in the top 10 for scoring. To give you an idea just how efficient they are, the Pistons in the past seven years were never higher than 17th in the league in scoring when ranking near the bottom of the league in pace. The Hawks went 1-2 on their recent three game road trip and return home for the first time in over a week. They've won four straight home games and if you take the Pistons road record and reverse it, that's about how good the Hawks are at Philips Arena (It's pretty good). Factor in that the Pistons have lost five straight on the road and that the Hawks probably haven't forgotten how they were embarrassed at The Palace earlier this season, tonight could get ugly.

Keys for Detroit
Don't Let Crawford Go Off -- He's been the Hawks mojo all season. They are 19-5 when he scores 20+ and 7-2 when he scores 25+.
Pass the rock -- It allows us to see things we haven't seen in 25 years (last night) and the Pistons win more games than they lose when they have 30+ assists (one to be exact -- 2 wins and 1 loss).
Play Daye - I'm going to cut and paste this for the rest of the season.

Question of the Game
What will Will Bynum do for an encore?

Stuckey, Wallace out again for Pistons
As expected, Pistons point guard Rodney Stuckey will not play tonight against the Hawks. But Stuckey, who will miss his fourth straight game, is traveling with the team and took part in individual shooting drills with training staff just minutes ago at Phillips Arena.

Stuckey started shooting after Wednesday’s practice, but he hardly worked up a sweat. He was a lot more aggressive tonight, practicing moves and shooting against the outstretched arms of trainers.Stuckey hasn’t participated in a practice since he collapsed and had to be taken from Quicken Loans Arena on a stretcher during a loss at Cleveland on March 5.

Ben Wallace (right knee) will miss his sixth straight game.

Dwight Howard had 28 points and 15 rebounds, and the streaking Orlando Magic wore down the back-to-back-to-back Washington Wizards 109-95 Saturday night.

Howard became a one-man show early in the second half, and he and Jameer Nelson made the alley-oop look routine as the Magic won their eighth straight game, the franchise's longest winning streak since April 2006.

Andray Blatche was Washington's one-man spotlight, scoring 32 points on 14-for-23 shooting as the Wizards lost their season-high seventh straight game. Washington wrapped up a stretch of three games in three nights with a road trip in the middle, a rare scheduling quirk caused when a game was postponed by a February blizzard.

Pistons will play to win, with or without Rodney Stuckey
A mob of reports surrounded Rodney Stuckey, asking how he felt, asking if he believed he had a future in the NBA, asking what he remembered about collapsing in the game at Cleveland. Stuckey answered the questions patiently and optimistically. He felt fine, he said. Near the end of the interview he was asked, if permitted to play again this season, if he would be hesitant to return.Stuckey said, no, he wouldn't be. He wanted to play, as long as doctors said it was OK. "It's my job," Stuckey said.

If Rodney Stuckey feels good enough to play, feels as if he can go on playing without any fear, let him to do it. Stuckey has undergone multiple tests, multiple examinations. If all the doctors say he's healthy and able to exert himself, that's good enough for me. If Stuckey feels confident enough to play professional basketball, confident that it won't affect his health, that's good enough for me, too. It's not up to the Pistons, or their fans. Ultimately, this decision rests with Stuckey and whether he wants to go back on the basketball court. He certainly seems eager to do so.

There is a ticklish issue in all this, though. The Pistons can certainly hold him back, say it's for his well-being, and probably plummet in the standings. That would, of course, strengthen their chances of getting a higher draft pick. This is a different matter entirely, but I would hope the Pistons go after every victory possible. I expect them to do so, too. I have a difficult time seeing Joe Dumars and John Kuester giving away games. I just don't see that happening. Just like I don't see Rodney Stuckey staying away from basketball, either.

Johnson's 26 power Hawks past Pistons, 112-99
Joe Johnson scored 26 points and Atlanta Hawks had their best shooting game of the season but still had to hold off Detroit's late comeback to beat the Pistons 112-99 on Saturday night. The Hawks took a 28-point lead in the second quarter but suffered a second-half letdown. Atlanta kept its lead in double figures from the 7:17 mark of the opening quarter until Detroit's Ben Gordon scored with 6:45 remaining to cut the lead to 96-87. The Hawks answered with an 11-4, including seven points from Johnson, run to push the lead back to 16 points. The Hawks made 15 of 18 shots from the field in the second quarter to give the team its highest field-goal percentage in a quarter (83.3) and half (73.0) this season. The Hawks made 63 percent of their shots for the game, another season high. Josh Smith had 18 points and a career-high 11 assists for Atlanta. Jamal Crawford had 17 points and Al Horford added 15. Jason Maxiell led Detroit with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Richard Hamilton had 18 points for the Pistons, who have lost eight of 10.

Former Georgia Tech guard Will Bynum had 17 points and seven assists one night after he set a career high with 20 assists in Detroit's 101-87 win over Washington. Hamilton had 14 points in the third quarter as the Pistons attempted to rally from a 69-41 halftime deficit. The Hawks' strong start was too much to overcome. Atlanta opened with assists on each of its 12 baskets in the first quarter and led 28-7 after an 18-1 run. The Hawks' 30-12 lead after the first quarter set the stage for even better shooting in the second period. Atlanta stretched its lead to 28 points at 57-29. Detroit, already playing without starters Rodney Stuckey (dizzy spells) and Ben Wallace (knee), had forward Jonas Jerebko leave the game midway through the third quarter. Jerebko, a rookie from Sweden, grimaced and grabbed his left shoulder after trying to stop a drive by Josh Smith. Jerebko returned to open the final period and had nine points and nine rebounds.

NOTES: Detroit's 12 first-quarter points were the fewest allowed by Atlanta this season. ... Bynum and Pistons coach John Kuester were called for technical fouls with 6:11 remaining in the first quarter after Bynum complained he had been fouled. ... The Hawks made 7 of 14 3-pointers. Crawford was good on each of his three attempts.
