Bickley has decided to jump in the fracas and rub some salt in the wound.

http://www.azcentral.com/sports/suns/ar ... birth.html

...For now, cynics are on red alert. Like many others of his generation, Stoudemire must be chasing a dollar sign, trying to snag the biggest number possible. This summer, he can opt out of the final year on his contract with the Suns and sell himself to the highest bidder. His current level of play and his season-long temperament (mature, unaffected by trade rumors, the anti-Shawn Marion) guarantees no shortage of potential suitors.

"I think this is the best I've played in my career," Stoudemire said.

OK, great. But why now?

It's easy to stereotype Stoudemire. The vanity plays and self-appointed nicknames paint an unflattering portrait of the man, and his current performance level seems almost treacherous.

Just watch him play. He's explosive, active, dunking on people's heads and actually trying to play defense. He doesn't stand idly on the court, masking half-baked effort on some lack of understanding.

He's the player we all wanted all along, and he shows up now, on the way to divorce court?

We need to make this an attractive place for Amar'e to park himself for at least a few more years. We just need to. Amar'e IS the Phoenix Suns and when he's determined he's a top 8 player in the NBA. There's no other way we can get a franchise centerpiece - Nash retires, we don't get a superstar in the draft until we're bad enough to get a top 3 and all of a sudden we're farther behind than the Wizards. We give him a 3 year deal and tell him he has a shot at a max deal the next time around if he brings it every night and helps the team win. Make some dramatic moves and get someone he wants here. Obviously you won't get a DWade but someone he's friendly with or sees potential in.

You're right Miklo. I think our FO have made the Suns a more attractive place with Lopez. No longer are we some uptempo small ball team with Amare at the 5, getting abused nightly by 6'11-7'0 centers. Amare is playing much more comfortably at the 4 and with Lopez guarding the biggest on the court, it allows Amare to roam on defense and grab the loose rebounds that Lopez has opened up for Amare. Basically Lopez is doing what Shaq did for us when he first got here, be the big guy next to Amare that did all the dirty work and let Amare concentrate on what he does best, scoring. As for giving him 3 years and telling him he has a chance to demand max money after, that will make him run to the highest bidder in the open market. He has a chance to demand max now and there's no way he'll be able to demand that kind of money when he's in his early 30's.

I would love to see Amare come back on a $14m-$15m a year contract. However, Barkley made a good point on the TNT show when the Suns played Utah. He talked about how it's crazy to give a guy a big sum of money (he said $100m contract, which is exaggerated but makes the point) if we are just good enough to be a playoff team but not good enough to contend and I understand and somewhat agree with that point. We absolutely need to have a plan worked out if we are to give Amare the contract he wants. This is more than just planning for the new CBA, it's about knowing who to surround Amare with to maximise his abilities and how to make us more than just a playoff team with a $70m-$75m player on our payroll. If we don't have a plan like that and just give Amare his contract, we'll be what the Wizards, Sixers or the Warriors are, good enough with an $80m player to make the playoffs, but not good enough to contend and have no financial flexibility to make this team any better.

Quite frankly, I'm not sure I trust Kerr to make the right moves.

I think the strategy is clear.... lowball Stat, hope he, ahem...cough, signs, and if not, spend 10 million on Lou, Brad Miller or the likes, and a rookie. (and secretly hope Hill goes to a contender, and someone signs Frye)

That's the problem. Kerr has been great at getting guys for cheap but he has no experience in major FA signings, I'm worried about what he would do when he finally has cap space to work with. Spending 10mil on Lou, Miller and a rookie would be a waste of money while only keeping us an inch mediocrity.

+1..I'm worried Kerr starts dilly dallying around and gives us a 12 man role player roster

If we get 10 mil open from Amar'e bolting, at least try to get a DLee type player in here instead of adding even more average bigs into the Frye/Collins/Lopez/Amundson/Clark pool of talent

Maybe S&T for DLee. NY probably won't get Wade or Lebron, maybe Bosh so Amare could be their fall guy.

Haven't I been reading it is a "done deal" with JJ?

I dunno, JJ will be wanting max money, Amare will start around $17 or something for first year. They won't have much room for anyone else. I actually think it is suicide for either the Knicks or Heat to have two max players unless they can trade for them instead of using all of their cap space on them.

I agree

It's always crazy to use cap space on a max player. Especially if you have no other assets to begin with.
