Pistons battle back against Hawks after being down 28, but come up short
Joe Johnson scored 26 points and Atlanta Hawks had their best shooting game of the season but still had to hold off Detroit's late comeback to beat the Pistons 112-99 on Saturday night. The Hawks took a 28-point lead in the second quarter but suffered a second-half letdown. Atlanta kept its lead in double figures from the 7:17 mark of the opening quarter until Detroit's Ben Gordon scored with 6:45 remaining to cut the lead to 96-87. The Hawks answered with an 11-4, including seven points from Johnson, run to push the lead back to 16 points. The Hawks made 15 of 18 shots from the field in the second quarter to give the team its highest field-goal percentage in a quarter (83.3) and half (73.0) this season. The Hawks made 63 percent of their shots for the game, another season high.
Josh Smith had 18 points and a career-high 11 assists for Atlanta. Jamal Crawford had 17 points and Al Horford added 15. Jason Maxiell led Detroit with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Richard Hamilton had 18 points for the Pistons, who have lost eight of 10. Former Georgia Tech guard Will Bynum had 17 points and seven assists one night after he set a career high with 20 assists in Detroit's 101-87 win over Washington. Hamilton had 14 points in the third quarter as the Pistons attempted to rally from a 69-41 halftime deficit. The Hawks' strong start was too much to overcome.
Atlanta opened with assists on each of its 12 baskets in the first quarter and led 28-7 after an 18-1 run. The Hawks' 30-12 lead after the first quarter set the stage for even better shooting in the second period. Atlanta stretched its lead to 28 points at 57-29. Detroit, already playing without starters Rodney Stuckey (dizzy spells) and Ben Wallace (knee), had forward Jonas Jerebko leave the game midway through the third quarter. Jerebko, a rookie from Sweden, grimaced and grabbed his left shoulder after trying to stop a drive by Josh Smith. Jerebko returned to open the final period and had nine points and nine rebounds.

Pistons torched by Hawks
Joe Johnson led five Hawks in double-figures with 26 points as the Pistons lost to the Hawks, 112-99, tonight in Atlanta. The Hawks shot 63% (46-for-73) from the field and 7-for-14 from the three-point line. Josh Smith had 18 points and 11 assists. Jamal Crawford (Michigan) came off the bench to score 17. Al Horford added 15 and Marvin Williams 12. “I never thought I’d have a double-double when one of them was not rebounds,” said Smith, who is averaging 15.9 points and 8.7 rebounds. “It felt good.” Jason Maxiell had 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Pistons. Richard Hamilton scored 18 points and Will Bynum had 16 points and seven assists. Ben Gordon scored 12 off the bench.
Detroit cut a once 27-point lead in the second half down to nine on a Ben Gordon reverse lay-up with 6:49 to play. But, the lead crept back up to 16 on Johnson's three-pointer and running lay-up with 3:21 to play. “It’s always tough to come back when you’re down by so much,” Hamilton said. “The game is about runs, you know. And the run that they were in the first and second quarter, it’s really hard to come back. You’re fighting an uphill battle the whole game.” Hamilton wasn’t comforted by Detroit’s attempted comeback. “I can’t see any positives out of this game,” he said. “We lost by 30, 20, whatever. I really can’t see any positives out of this game.” Jonas Jerebko left the game midway through the third quarter. He grabbed his left shoulder after trying to stop a drive by Josh Smith. Jonas Jerebko leave the game midway through the third quarter. Jerebko, a rookie from Sweden, grimaced and grabbed his left shoulder after trying to stop a drive by Josh Smith.
The Pistons never led and were down, 28-7, after Atlanta scored 13 straight. It was 30-12 after one quarter. The onslaught continued on the second, when Crawford scored 10 points in less than three minutes to lead, 44-22. Detroit’s 12 first-quarter points were the fewest allowed by Atlanta this season. The Hawks led, 69-41, at halftime. Johnson had 13 points in the first half. Williams had 12 and Crawford scored 10. The lead hovered around 20 for much of the third but the Pistons outscored the Hawks, 26-20, to close the quarter. Detroit was down, 92-77, going into the fourth. Bynum and Pistons coach John Kuester were called for technical fouls with 6:11 remaining in the first quarter after Bynum complained he had been fouled.

NBA Game Summary - Detroit at Atlanta
Final Score: Atlanta 112, Detroit 99
Joe Johnson finished with 26 points, as the Atlanta Hawks used an efficient offensive performance to take a 112-99 victory over the Detroit Pistons. Josh Smith added 18 points and a career-high 11 assists for the Hawks, who shot a season-high 63 percent and made 7-of-14 from three-point range. Jamal Crawford made all three of his long-distance attempts on his way to 17 points, which helped Atlanta take its second consecutive win. Jason Maxiell had 19 points and 12 boards for the Pistons, who were coming off Friday's victory over Washington. Will Bynum had a career-best 20 assists in that win, and Saturday, ended with 16 points and seven assists. Richard Hamilton scored 18 points, but Detroit had just 12 points in the first quarter and never caught up. "I think that's what hurt us," Pistons head coach John Kuester said. "I thought we were trying, but we were not taking care of the basketball, and they were making us pay on that in the first half."The Pistons shot just 5-of-20 in the opening frame, allowing the Hawks to open up a huge lead. Atlanta used a 13-0 run to go ahead 28-7, and held a 30-12 advantage moving to the second.
The 12 points were the fewest the Hawks have allowed in the opening quarter this season. "Any time we can come out of the gate like that, it gives us confidence throughout the game," Johnson said. "That makes us a tough team to beat. When you've got to play catch-up on the road like that, it's always tough." Atlanta continued to pour on the points, making 15-of-18 field goal attempts in the second quarter. Jeff Teague had the last of those, a jumper with 0.4 seconds left to put the Hawks up 69-41 at the break. However, the Pistons trimmed their deficit in the third quarter, using an 11-2 run to get within 78-64 with five minutes left. They trailed 92-77 at the end of the frame, and got within single digits in the middle of the fourth, as consecutive baskets from Kwame Brown and Ben Gordon cut Atlanta's lead to 96-87. But Johnson countered with a jumper, and after a few failed possessions, a Smith dunk had the Hawks ahead by 13 with 5:20 left. Almost two minutes later, Johnson drained a three before sinking a layup that put Atlanta up 107-91, and the Hawks led by double digits the rest of the way.
Game Notes
Atlanta improved to 26-7 at home this season, while Detroit fell to 7-25 on the road...The Pistons shot 49.3 percent...Gordon had 12 points for Detroit...Al Horford had 15 points for Atlanta, while Marvin Williams added 12.

Postgame Quotes - March 13, 2010
Regular Season Game #66
Pistons Head Coach John Kuester
“The Hawks played with a tremendous amount of energy early in the game. In the second half, I think we did a excellent job getting back into the game. We turned the ball over 12 times in the first half, and had only three or four turnovers in the second half. By taking care of the ball, it allowed us to set our defense up. Richard Hamilton and Tayshuan Prince continue to play with professionalism. These guys have championship rings, so this is new territory for them. I’ve been impressed with how they want to help this team become better.”
(About the Hawks) “They’re well coached. They have an outstanding group of veterans who know how to play now. They know how to turn it on when they have to, and that’s going to be important, because as tie goes on and you get ready for the playoffs, you have to be prepared to turn it for 48 minutes.”

Pistons Guard Will Bynum
“I think their switching defense gave us a problem early on in the game. It made it difficult for us in our offense, especially on the wings. They kind of stunned us in the first half, and we weren’t able to fully recover in the second.”
(On playing point guard) “I’m learning as I go every day. I’m learning to pick and choose my spots. When the game is blown open like it was tonight, I think I have to be more aggressive on the offensive end. I tried to be more aggressive getting the ball inside the paint in the second half. That helped us get the game closer in the second half, but it’s hard to come back from such a large deficit.”

Pistons Guard Richard Hamilton
“We didn’t match the Hawks’ energy coming out in the first half, and we turned the ball over a lot early. It was a good learning experience for us. I think we did a good job in the second half staying in our sets, and not letting them rattle us like they did in the first half. It’s tough to come back when you’re down by so much, but that’s why it’s important to come out early with good energy in the second half to give yourself a chance. This game is about runs, and when you allow the home team to make big runs in the first half, it makes it tough on you. Tonight we were fighting an uphill battle the entire game.”

Hawks Head Coach Mike Woodson
“We will a little slow to start the third quarter, but the first half was as good a first half as we’ve played all year on both ends of the floor. At the start of the third, we were flat. Teams are always going to make runs, we know that. It’s how you counter the runs, and we were able to do that.”
(On the first half): “Our defense … we did everything that we set out to do. From shootaround this morning until we walked out on the court tonight, it all happened. Our switches were great, we got a bunch of deflections, our traps were pretty good. Then we moved the basketball, we shared it and executed, moved the pace offensively and we made plays.”
(On 35 assists): “The ball was moving tonight. Guys were coming with pace offensively, and setting screens. Every play we called, they really executed. And we’ll have to have that as we come down the stretch. Every game has to be like that on the offensive end. And defensively, you have to be ready to play and defend.”

Hawks Forward Al Horford
“It all started for us on the defensive end. We were really tuned in early in the game. We were really on edge. I personally came out with the mentality that it was a playoff game. I think we have to come out every game with that sort of focus. I think that made a big difference for our team.” “They made their run, and we were able to handle their run, and really not give them any life. The lowest they got it was to nine, and we pulled away after that.”

Hawks Forward Josh Smith
(On his career high 11 assists): “It feels good. I would never have thought I wouldn’t get a double-double with rebounds, and get it in assists. But I’ll definitely take the win over all of it.”
(On energizing the team with steals): “Minus their record, they’re a pretty talented ballclub. They have a lot of guys that can put the ball in the hole. We definitely wanted to jump on them early, get the crowd into it, and get momentum on our side.” “Teams are going to make runs. It’s very rare that a team doesn’t hit shots in both halves. I knew we would eventually stop the bleeding. I’m glad we did it sooner than later.”
