honestly, a stupid move by the jets to let him go for the 3 mil bonus.. and now leon washington visiting the niners... jets are going to regret cutting jones... You know what you get with jones.. a locker room leader, a guy who will run hard and never fumbles.....

Eh, they had good reasoning.

Why is Leon visiting SF? Is he a FA?

and maybe, just maybe we are going to land a young RB in the draft.

Not sure I like that, having two raw RB's on the team.

Jones did a lot of good things for the Jets, on and off the field as you pointed out. But we all saw how he performed in the playoffs. He had nothing left in the tank and basically never got the ball past two yards. Against good defenses his lack of speed and power really hurt him and he doesn't take advantage of our tremendous offensive line. Now we could see it first hand what huge difference was between Greene and Jones. Greene didn't dance around, hit the hole hard and finished runs over defenders - all things TJ just doesn't do. Add that he is getting older and older and I can certainly understand the move from the Jets perspective. He frees up money and gives us the opportunity to get younger. If we would have had a better RB to complement Greene against Indy, we might have won. A run first team needs two good backs, and as much as I admire Jones for his workmanlike approach and everything he brought, he just wasn't more than an average runner. Now he had good numbers but in his case I see them being more a result of our offensive line. No disrespect to him but I think it was time to move on. Running backs over 30 always raise red flags... I wish Jones all the best, he was a warrior but the Jets can do better than him.

There will be a ton of running backs in the draft who fit our zone blocking scheme perfectly. Montario Hardesty from Tennessee or LeGarrette Blount from Oregon for example. Punishing downhill runners who go forward after one cut. Man, I can just imagine an opposing defense taking blow after blow from our running game next year. Can't wait for next season...

A much more threatening situation in my eyes is the Tony Richardson deal. I hope he adds another year and the Jets groom a FB to take over for him in 2011. He is the unsung hero to our running game and a terrific player. Hope we resign him...

Leon will be back unless some team throws crazy money at him. I just can't see that after the horrific injury he had. The Niners rumors were shut down from what I heard. Now we shouldn't forget, as good a player Leon is, we went on our playoff and late season run last year without him. Definitely something to consider when we think about resigning him or matching a contract offer. If someone else will sign him, we get back a second rounder which we could easily turn into a good RB like Hardesty, Blount or Ben Tate from Auburn...
Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies...

LaDanian Tomlinson is visiting the Jets tomorrow (Friday).

Assume him to take the backup role and split carries should Leon bolt.

Do I doubt he actually gets PT if we sign someone else? Absolutely.

So not much here to discuss, I suppose.

Re: Official Offseason Thread - Jets Making Hard Push For LT

Post#67 » by zilby » Sat Mar 13, 2010 6:25 pm

Free agent running back LaDainian Tomlinson is at the Jets training facility for a visit, and the team is doing all it can to get his name on a contract before he leaves New Jersey.

"For that to ever turn into a signing, it's gonna have to be if everything lines up with him, us, economics, medical, role," GM Mike Tannenbaum said this morning on WFAN.

"I think he would bring great leadership to our organization, but we'll see how it goes today."

Fanhouse.com reports the Jets are willing to give Tomlinson the same two-year, $5 million deal the Chiefs gave Thomas Jones, who could not get that offer from the Jets.

"(The Jets) may be willing to move upwards to $3.5 million a year for Tomlinson in a contract loaded with incentives," the report says.

The report says "Tomlinson has already told the Jets that he wants to think things over, travel back home to visit with his wife, LaTorsha, and pray over all options."

But the Jets are trying to avoid that.

"We want this guy, and when we want a player, we typically go get the player,'' a Jets source told Fanhouse. "We have every intention to get him signed before he leaves.''

Fanhouse reports several details on Tomlinson's visit, including a gift basket for his first child (expected this summer) and dinner at Trump National Golf Club.

Tomlinson was scheduled to fly back home to San Diego, but the dinner plans prevented him from catching a flight to the West Coast. The running back’s itinerary beyond Friday night had not yet been determined, Jets spokesman Bruce Speight told The Associated Press.

Tannenbaum said Tomlinson is familiar with the Jets' system having worked with offensive coordinator Brain Schottenheimer when he was an assistant in San Diego.

"He would give us that change of pace back after you pound it and pound it with Shonn (Greene)," the Jets source told Fanhouse writer Thomas George. "If LaDainian stays healthy, you put him in some of the same situations our other backs were in last year with this offensive line and you will see even bigger production."

JETS GM ON JONES, SANCHEZ

Greene likely is the Jets' starter, but with Jones gone and Leon Washington possibly leaving, it seems Tomlinson's role could be bigger with the Jets than with the Vikings, whom he visited Thursday.

"We have Shonn and Leon, and we will add somebody else to the mix," Tannenbaum said. "That's a position that we feel we need depth."

Tomlinson left Minnesota without a contract, but Vikings coach Brad Childress didn't sound worried about Tomlinson's visit with the Jets.

Speaking on a Twin Cities radio station, Childress hinted that Tomlinson simply may be trying to create a bidding war for his services.

"I think that a lot of times when you only have one person involved the agents don’t like that game and a lot of time they take them and -- what shall I say? -- create the atmosphere that there’s want somewhere else," Childress said on KFAN radio, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "And there may be, in fact, want somewhere else. But something to drive the deal."

Childress seemed confident Tomlinson's visit with the Vikings would be enough to get him to sing with Minnesota, despite Friday's visit with the Jets, and rumored stops in Philadelphia and New Orleans to come.

"He gave [the Jets his word he would visit] and he is a man of his word and it wasn’t like I was going to throw myself down in front of the road," Childress said.

And each team reached its conference championship game last season, so a priority for a winning team should not decide the issue.

"I know he wants to win a championship and that factors heavily into his decision," the Jets source told Fanhouse. "We think we can accomplish that together.''

I think LT would be a great fit. I was upset with dumping TJ but understandable since he faded hard. I wonder what will happen with Leon though, I really would like to see him with the Jets still. Not thrilled about Poole btw.

If we sign another safety, Poole will not play, so it really has no effect on me.

TJ was bound to be gone since the end of our playoff run, and I don't think Leon can get back 100% healthy next season. I don't want us to draft a RB and have two raw RB's on our roster with nobody to mentor, so I will be happy if we get LT.

LT is headed back to San Diego for a bit to discuss things over with his family.

In other news, Rex had a weight-loss surgery to help fight obesity.

Also, the Jets and Giants are flipping a coin for who hosts their opener at the new stadium.

It's a depth move. Nothing wrong with adding safety depth, but they better not believe he's the answer to the hole left by Rhodes.

If LT returns to 3/4 of his best form, I welcome the move. They are probably hoping with our O-Line, it might happen.

Exactly.

Nothing more than insurance.

I agree with this too.

With our O-Line, Tomlinson could excel in our system and mentor Greene, we all know what he is capable of.

Love the LT signing. Our line plus his ability to receive and change pace after Greene breaks 'em down will be major. The extra receiving option for Sanchez will be big as well. Team is really shaping up. Hopefully you guys are right about Poole too, I didn't think of him as a back-up signing off the bat.

LT gives us a great option on the goal line, especially with our line. Again, if he gets some of his form back behind our O-Line, this move looks even better.

I wonder where this leaves Leon though.

Finally!

Love the signing, because Tomlinson can mentor Greene.

I hope this doesn't mean the end for Leon though.

2. I keep hearing from my Jets sources that they’re having internal discussions regarding Brandon Marshall and would love to put together a package of players that might entice the Broncos and still keep their first-round pick.

In other Jets news today, Antonio Cromartie paid all his child support, with the help of the organization. They paid him 500k of his 1.7M salary up front to give child support. Good to see him on the right track.

Also, The Jets are taking this year's Thanksgiving night game. They were offered by Goodell and accepted.

Also, Jay Feely is going to visit the Cards.
