+ Rudy Gay - Joe Johnson

Post#1 » by dejaman » Sun Mar 14, 2010 9:11 pm

Why not throw the farm at Rudy Gay this Offseason? IMO he has more upside than JJ, is an above the rim star in the making, is younger, and gives you the same type of offensive numbers as JJ. I know that he is a RFA but the Grizzlies will be up for sale soon and they may not want to match a near max deal.

I would love Rudy. Hes been great in the clutch all year.
Is it to much to ask for a team that plays hard and cares? Seems so.

I guess you are tired of explaining that if Joe leaves and we renounce other cap holds that we'll still only have about 7M under the cap to spend.

I won't bother pointing out how that offer wouldn't land Gay.

Wow, spare me the salary cap lesson, your assumption is that the Hawks are unwilling/unable to pay a luxury tax to keep up with some of the leagues better teams .

Lakers, Mavs, Celtics, Cavs, Nuggets, Magic are all set to spend more than the league limit, if the Hawks are serious about contending for a title they may have to ante up.

Now back to the topic, what are your thoughts on Rudy Gay as a potential replacement for JJ?

You have to be kidding me. The Hawks can't just "throw the farm" at Rudy Gay & it has NOTHING to do with their willingness to pay the luxury tax.

Are you sure you don't need the salary cap lesson?

i think a more realistic maybe even better option would be signing Ray Allen or Raja Bell.... and have Ray/Crawford back court. it would be some what small, but still be a bigger back court than Miami, Cleveland, and Orlando

Dejaman, a quick explanation on how a team wildly exceeds the salary cap.
1. It takes time to accomplish. The rules prevent you from going wildly above just by spending in one off-season.
2. You overpay your own free agents utilizing Bird rights that allow a team to exceed the cap to retain their own players
3. You use your exceptions to the fullest.
4. You trade large contracts before as they expire for better players from teams looking to rebuild rather that let the contracts come off the books.
Congratulations you now have a payroll only a billionaire could tolerate.

The Hawks only have Bird rights on Joe Johnson and Josh Childress. They flirt with luxury tax by maxing out Joe. They would exceed it by coming to terms with Josh (very unlikely). League rules prevent offering any other free agents more than the MLE or space under the cap if Joe and Josh leave or are renounced. We could offer another free agent more in a sign and trade, but to do so we'd have to give up people that the other team covets in return (unlikely they value anyone we'd want to deal).

P.S. - The Hawks are not owned by billionaires.
