Kevin Durant scored 35 points, Russell Westbrook added 30 points and 11 assists, and the Oklahoma City Thunder made up ground in the race for home-court advantage in the playoffs with a 119-111 victory over the short-handed Utah Jazz on Sunday night.

Wesley Matthews hit six 3-pointers and scored a career-high 29 points for the Jazz, who played without injured starters Mehmet Okur (back) and Andrei Kirilenko (calf). Deron Williams had 27 points and 14 assists, and Carlos Boozer had 18 points and 11 rebounds for Utah, which has lost back-to-back games for the first time since Jan. 4.

Green finished with 14 points, while Nenad Krstic and Thabo Sefolosha scored 13 apiece for the Thunder, who pulled even with Utah in the loss column with 24. Oklahoma City is 16-0 when shooting at least 50 percent from the field.

Pistons-Celtics Preview
It was a rough week for the Boston Celtics. A visit from the lowly Detroit Pistons to open a brief home stretch could help them get back on track. Coming off another disappointing loss to the top team in the Eastern Conference, the Celtics look to bounce against the struggling Pistons on Monday night. Boston (41-24) shot 40.0 percent and allowed LeBron James to score 24 of his 30 points in the second half of a 104-93 loss at Cleveland on Sunday. It was the Celtics' second consecutive decisive loss to the East leaders, and it concluded a six-day stretch where the Atlantic Division leaders went 1-3 after winning four in a row. Though the aging Celtics have a comfortable division lead, they are fourth in the East, 10 games behind the Cavaliers and looking like a team that's playing tired, rather than inspired. "Looking at the defense from the (2008) championship year, when we won it, it doesn't look the same," said former Celtic and current Cavalier Leon Powe. "It looks like the rotation is slower and they ain't getting to the shooters and closing out like they did before. I don't know if it's effort or maybe they're a little older."

Though Boston's big three of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen are in their 30s, they are still some of the NBA's top all-around players. Allen scored 20 points while Pierce and Garnett each had 18 on Sunday. As a group, however, Boston's struggles have come on both ends of the court. Boston has been held to 93 or fewer points in four of five games, and it's allowed an average of 106.0 in its last three. "We've just got to keep dealing," coach Doc Rivers said. "Our goal (is) to get us at our peak when the playoffs start and see where we are at, but we've got to get there and we have to work there. We have a lot of work to do." The Celtics can start Monday in the opener of a favorable two-game home stretch against Detroit (23-43) and New York. Though Boston split the two previous games with Detroit - both at The Palace of Auburn Hills - this season, the Pistons have lost eight of 10 overall heading into this contest, including a 105-100 loss to the Celtics on March 2. Allen had 18 points and Rajon Rondo added 15 with 11 assists for the Celtics in that contest. Rondo is averaging 18.0 points and 9.0 assists against Detroit this season.

The Pistons, on the verge of missing the playoffs for the first time since 2000-01, look to bounce back from a 112-99 loss at Atlanta on Saturday. Jason Maxiell had 19 points with 12 rebounds and Richard Hamilton added 18 as Detroit trailed by as many as 28 while losing its sixth straight road game and falling to 7-25 away from home. "It's always tough to come back when you're down by so much," Hamilton said. "You're fighting an uphill battle the whole game. "I can't see any positives out of this game." Detroit's 6-foot-10 rookie Jonas Jerebko had 16 points and 10 rebounds earlier this month against Boston, but his status is uncertain after injurying his shoulder against Atlanta.

In the case of Allen Iverson, the truth hurts
Once upon a time, it was hard to determine what was more difficult to stomach: the foolish, detrimental behavior of professional athletes or the apologists disguised as their inner circle, eager to excuse the inexcusable. And then there came Allen Iverson, who didn’t make it difficult at all. We can sit around and pretend that Iverson was victimized last week. That somehow, he was outed, and his personal business was thrown into the street. But the truth is, from missed practices to excessive tardiness to a flagrant disdain for authority in any venue he has frequented in the past decade, nothing new about Iverson’s habits was revealed in the last few days. If only the same can be said about the rest of us. Sadly, including myself. It has been a difficult week, folks! I’ll just put it out there. After revealing what has been heard for years about Iverson’s drinking and penchant for the casinos, I’ve received the kind of beatdown only Joe Frazier can relate to from the pummeling he suffered against George Foreman decades ago. I’ve been vilified and excoriated, called a turncoat and a sellout, unworthy of so much as a handshake from several members of Iverson’s former team, the 76ers — the last people in need of more adversaries. The truth is, I deserve it. Despite the objectivity exercised while disseminating the news, it’s impossible to be completely impartial about someone you’ve known for 14 years and are incredibly fond of despite the innumerable mistakes he has made.

The thing is, if I’m honest enough to express these feelings about Iverson, to stand up and say none of us who care should sit idly by and act as if the combination of Iverson’s history in the fast lane and his present family issues will be healed by silence, where are his so-called friends, the ones with the all-is-well expressions while knowing there’s mounting evidence to the contrary? No one said Iverson is an alcoholic nor a gambling addict. What was reported was that he’s drinking and gambling too much, enough to concern quite a few people in the NBA. Saying what needed to be said is something I don’t regret. The truth hurts sometimes, particularly when it involves someone at a low point in their life. Electing to stand alone, however, while a bevy of individuals — former teammates, locker-room personnel, team executives, hangers-on, and his business manager — stand around in silence was perhaps the most questionable decision of all. Most of us have heard about the mistakes Iverson has made, but what about the teammates who witnessed them? What about Iverson being in casinos at 3 a.m. on game days? What about calls into this newspaper’s newsroom of Iverson being in Philadelphia while his daughter was ill — when Iverson’s closest confidant, Gary Moore, was reported saying Iverson was in Atlanta? Before any of that, there was Iverson, going from Denver to Detroit to Memphis inside of two years, missing 82 games along the way, and struggling to find a job before the Sixers came to the rescue two months ago.

All while his health was deteriorating, reportedly along with that of his daughter Messiah — before the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported his wife, Tawanna, had filed for a divorce last week and was pursuing custody of their five children. Is this living life in darkness? Behind closed doors? In privacy, where no one could dare opine about business they knew nothing of? To swear such things is utter nonsense. Totally undeserving of any discussion. But this is the way it always has been with Iverson, as it is with most athletes. Associates swear they were completely oblivious to anything Tiger Woods was doing. Michael Vick’s boys had no problem with anything related to dogfighting until they stopped getting paid and were threatened with jail time when the feds came knocking on their door. So many talk so much about how much they love Iverson. So much so that once we all heard of the divorce, those same “friends” feigned ignorance or a none-of-my-business mentality. Iverson is human. Losing his career and family all at once — these things can happen. “It’s always hard for friends and loved ones to step in and do what’s right,” former Temple coach John Chaney said last week. “But that is what friends and loved ones do. They must.” Especially with Iverson. Times right now are not about what Iverson has been doing. It’s about what he’ll do next. While living fast, he’s potentially losing the one thing that means most to him: his family. Focusing on family would be a beautiful thing for anyone to do under such difficult circumstances, but how often does that happen — particularly with someone living the life he has lived? And those closest to him sat around, watched, and did virtually nothing.

Okur, Kirilenko sit out Jazz game vs. Thunder
Center Mehmet Okur and forward Andrei Kirilenko were missing from Utah's starting lineup Sunday night as the Jazz played a key game for playoff positioning at Oklahoma City.

Okur was sidelined with a strained back after playing a season-high 41 minutes Friday night in a loss at Milwaukee. Kirilenko had left Utah's last game in the second half after straining his right calf. Okur and Kirilenko are the team's third- and fourth-leading scorers and combine for 25 points and 11.4 rebounds per game.

C.J. Miles and Paul Millsap took their places in the starting lineup. Reserve Ronnie Price was also out for the second straight game with a bruised right wrist. Earlier in the day, the Jazz signed swingman Othyus Jeffers to a second 10-day contract.

Heat's O'Neal tossed after tussle with Sixers' Dalembert
Jermaine O'Neal has been ejected from the Miami Heat's game against Philadelphia after grabbing Samuel Dalembert's face.

O'Neal departed after receiving two technical fouls in the third quarter Sunday. Dalembert received one technical and remained in the game.

Moments before the confrontation, Dalembert accidentally poked O'Neal in the eye under the basket. Following a timeout, the two were running upcourt when their arms tangled. A foul was called on another player, and O'Neal briefly grabbed Dalembert's face with one hand before being pulled away.

Steve Nash had 13 points and 12 assists in his 1,000th NBA game and his favorite receiver Amare Stoudemire had a dominant 36-point, 12-rebound performance in the Phoenix Suns' 120-106 victory over the depleted New Orleans Hornets on Sunday night.

Stoudemire, playing just 32 minutes, topped 30 points for the fourth time in five games. The exception was a 29-point effort against the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night.

The Hornets, with only eight players in uniform for the second game in a row, have lost nine of 11. Marcus Thornton scored 28 points and David West scored 24 for New Orleans.

LeBron and Co. clobber Celtics
After coming off the bench and helping the Cleveland Cavaliers put away the Celtics 104-93 on Sunday, Powe, who won an NBA title with Boston in 2008, took a moment to reflect on his former team, a squad showing signs of age and perhaps vulnerability.

LeBron James scored 24 of his 30 points in the second half and the Cavs wore down the Celtics for their second decisive win over one of the East's premier teams in less than a month.

Ray Allen scored 20, while Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, who was in foul trouble for most of the game, had 18 apiece for the Celtics.

Celtics struggling as Pistons come to town
Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers doesn't spend much time these days perusing the NBA's Eastern Conference standings. At least the upper portion. "I rarely look at where we are as far as the top four," said Rivers, whose Celtics host the Pistons tonight. "We're three or four, whatever -- that will play itself out. But I do look at the teams (we might play in the first round of the playoffs). I do focus on that. "Starting about now, you start watching all the teams that are in the five, six, seven, eight spots because you can play one of those teams. But I never look at the top four. That's going to be (determined by) how we play." The Celtics have not been playing well of late and have plenty of wrinkles to iron out as the Eastern standings take shape. Rivers does not hesitate to answer "health" when asked what the team's top priority is for the stretch run. Injuries, Rivers said, have led to a continuity issue the Celtics have been dealing with this season.

Add some bad home-court losses, looking to get Ray Allen some shots, and trying to get Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett to improve their level of play, and it's easy to see the Celtics have plenty on their to-do list in the final weeks of the season. First and foremost, though, Rivers says he'd like to see the team get healthy. Garnett has battled a right-knee injury and Pierce has had a variety of aches and pains. "Health is the No. 1 priority for us," Rivers said. "And then, the second is continuity. We haven't had a great year as far as having the team together. We really haven't. When our starting lineup is intact, our record is as good as anybody's in the NBA. "But we haven't had that and more importantly, we haven't had it enough in practice. Even when that lineup was playing, there were a lot of practices where we couldn't practice. We've missed a half season of practices as far as I'm concerned due to injuries. So we're having shoot-arounds now where we're trying to get more floor time because we need it."

Rivers said the team had virtually no opportunity to practice in March, which was why he played newcomer Michael Finley for almost 8 minutes against the Bucks last week. Trying to establish some home-court advantage for the playoffs has become a serious issue for the Celtics. In recent home games, they lost to Cleveland by 20, lost to lowly New Jersey, beat Washington by three and lost by 20 to Memphis in a game that Rivers called his team "awful." The Celtics got booed by the locals during the Memphis game, and the TD Banknorth Garden was pretty much cleared by game's end. What's the answer at home? "I wish I could figure it out," Rivers said. "I could probably sell it and do well." Allen said, "I think we played our best basketball starting the season off and we haven't gotten back to that level. We've been fighting to get back there." Yes, the Celtics have plenty to straighten out before the playoffs, but they still have time to do so. If they don't, it could be a short playoff run for the Green.

Pistons guard Will Bynum makes statement as starter
The Pistons' Will Bynum has faced quite a gamut of point guards since he replaced Rodney Stuckey in the starting lineup. Deron Williams, Aaron Brooks and Mike Bibby are top names in the NBA, and aside from Williams, arguably the best point guard in the league, Bynum has more than held his own as the Pistons have gone 2-2 in the games he has started.

He clearly got the best of Bibby in Saturday night's 112-99 loss at Atlanta. He scored 16 points and had seven assists; Bibby had seven points and five assists. The effort came one night after his 20-assist game in a blowout victory against the Wizards. So while some may think it's best for the 23-43 Pistons to lose games to increase their chances of a good draft pick, the restricted free agent is auditioning for his next deal.

And he is proving that he deserves a commitment from some team. "I'm learning as I go every day. I'm learning to pick and choose my spots," Bynum said after Saturday's loss to Atlanta. "When the game is blown open like it was tonight, I think I have to be more aggressive on the offensive end. I tried to be more aggressive getting the ball inside the paint in the second half."

STUCKEY UPDATE: Rodney Stuckey said after Saturday night's game that he would miss his fifth straight game tonight at Boston.

He also said he would like to participate in practice before returning. That makes it appear unlikely that he will play Tuesday against the Cavs since the next practice won't be until Thursday.

He hasn't played since collapsing during a loss at Cleveland on March 5.
