Reed, Ruiz, and Dopirak

Post#1 » by squeekysneakers » Mon Mar 15, 2010 9:24 pm

These three guys have been tearing up the spring competition and look ready for the majors. Is there any way that Cito can leave them off the team?

I would prefer that Snider get the opening day spot over Reed myself but how do you tell the guy he didn't do enough to make it? He has done everything he was asked to do.

Now I know Spring Training is not the best place to evaluate big-league ready talent but Dopirak and Ruiz have owned AA and AAA pitching and are having a good spring. These guys have nothing left to prove in the minors and would be great bats off the bench. If/When Overbay is finally moved either one of these guys could fill in nicely until Wallace is ready to assume the everyday role.

What do you all think are the odds these three make the team out of camp?

Thankfully, Cito doesn't get to set the **** roster, so I would say 0%, 74% and 25%, in that order.

For reed, It's really easy to tell a guy that. Teams do it to one or two players every year. They simply say "you have a long track record of sucking, and he is the future of the franchise... but you're welcome to go to AAA and hope he gets hurt".

One of Ruiz and Dopirak are almost certain to make the team. Given that the only thing between them seems to be that Ruiz was the one who spent time up last year, and didn't disappoint, I would say the odds are heavily in his favour.

All three can't really make the roster. Reed isn't on the 40-man, and unless Mike McCoy or one of the pitchers are dropped, he won't make the team. He does have some value because he can play CF, but he can't hit worth a damn.

Ruiz vs. Dopirak should be interesting. I suspect that Ruiz will make the team and Dopirak will not, but even though he's technically a rookie, Ruiz is over the hill...he's only five months younger than Doc, for ****'s sake, not a prospect. This season (and the one after, and probably the one after that) don't matter; I'd rather attempt to develop the former top prospect who still has a career ahead of him, rather than the guy who's a couple years from collecting a pension.

I figured that Reed would be a long shot, I was surprised we even signed him after Gathwright was brought in. I do hope that Dopirak and Ruiz make the team but they essentially play the same position and neither of them particularly well. We have a number of potential first basemen but none that are particularly good in the field. Lind, Wallace, Ruiz, Dopirak are all better suited to the DH role. All of their bats would look good in the lineup IMHO. A lot of power there.

I think Ruiz will get the call because of his experience and Dopirak will be returned to the minors again.

Looks like Ruiz is staying and Dopirak is heading back to AAA. I'm happy for Ruiz because he has so often been the guy that plays well and gets sent back but I can't help but think Dopirak might have been the better choice.

Also lookd like Snider is playing his heart out to avoid getting sent down and giving Jeremy Reed his spot. The guy has really impressed, but Snider is the future. There is no reason to not go with Snider. The future is not now. Let the kids play and learn.
