Pistons at Celtics
Postgame Quotes - March 15, 2010
Regular Season Game #67
Pistons Head Coach John Kuester
Re: What do you think of tonight’s game?
“They were good, we were bad. They played an outstanding basketball game and we added to it. There’s no question.”
Re: Talk about the defensive end, your team made it kind of easy. “Way too easy. They did a great job of exploiting and we didn’t react tonight. It was one of the few games that our energy wasn’t the way it should be and I’m disappointed with the way we played.”

Re: You were already playing shorthanded tonight, and then Tayshaun went down “You know, you still gotta play the game. The bottom line is that there is no stoppage in play. And you know, give those guys credit, they were hungry for a victory, they came out and took it to us, and what we have to do is regroup and realize that we could be out of a number of players as we have throughout the season. Whoever we play we’ve got to focus on our defense, making sure we’re getting better and then offensively we’ve got to play much better than we did.”

Re: Was DaJuan a bright spot? “DaJuan did a nice job, you know he shot the ball well, got a little bit better defensively. Austin I thought also did some things offensively good, but he has five turnovers and you don’t want to have that many turnovers in this situation.” Re: How do you try to keep your ship above water? “I’ll tell you this like I told our guys. You know we’ve got a number of basketball games left and our focus is to get better and we have to and we did get better tonight. And that was what we’ve been talking about the whole time, there are certain games, certain halves where we haven’t improved, but our guys have worked pretty god darn hard except for tonight. We didn’t get the same kind of effort. Now we’re gonna come back tomorrow and we’ll be ready to play.”

Pistons Guard Ben Gordon
Re playing differently than last year “I’m not on the same team as I am. Lot of different changes.”

Re how different the Celtics look this year “Last year they lost KG for a large part of the season so they look a little bit better at the point we played them. I don’t know if they are the same team as when they were first put together.”

Pistons Guard Richard Hamilton
Re what the Celtics did to control the game “They beat us to the spot on both ends of the floor. They’ve been doing what they’ve been doing the last couple of years. We just gotta be better.”

Re losing Tayshaun to injury “It’s tough, we’ve been hurt all year and another guy goes down. It’s one of them things we’re you be like c’mon man are you serious?’ But it’s tough.

Re Celtics job of keeping the intensity up “They played well, they played well early. First quarter they set the tone of the game, feeding off their fans. Getting us to turn the ball over and getting in transition and making shots. I thought that was a big part of the game.”

Celtics Head Coach Doc Rivers
Re Paul Pierce’s 12-point first quarter setting the tone
: “Well, I thought the defensive tone was just as good. So, it was nice. We obviously are really working to try to re-establish him. And like I said before the game, it’s coming around. It’s still not there, but, I mean, that was great to see. He looked explosive. So those are the signs I keep seeing that I think he’s getting closer and our team’s getting closer. I thought the ball just moved today. One turnover at halftime, which was great. I thought we got a little sloppy in the third; that’s almost expected with a lead like that. So, but overall, I just thought our energy was good. Was sustained for most of the game and that’s a good sign.”

Re what can he say about Glen Davis: “Just that he’s playing hard, you know, and really all of our guys. Today Marquis (Daniels) was great. That’s the energy, you know someone asked me about him before the game and that’s the energy we need from him every night. And you can see that. And Baby’s doing the same thing. Just keeping it simple, playing it hard, and playing the right way. You know, Baby’s moving the ball when he should move the ball, he’s shooting the ball when he should shoot the ball. You know, for if you’re not one of the go-to guys then the game is pretty simple as far as energy and just playing right, doing your job. And I think Baby’s – over the last, probably two weeks – he’s been absolutely fantastic in doing that.”
Re did he talk to Marquis Daniels: “No, I just – what I told you guys – yeah, he needs to play harder every night. And we told him that. Because since he’s been back – I thought before he got injured he was doing that, and since he’s been back it’s almost like he’s trying to, I don’t know, find his way or fit in instead of just being who he was. And, you know I told him – he sat and watched film with (Assistant Coach) Armond (Hill) today and they just watched his minutes from yesterday. And you could see it: you know, he’s a guy that plays hard. And so tonight you could see that. Even being more aggressive. And that’s what we need.”

Re has Michael Finley surpassed expectations: “Yeah, because I didn’t know what to expect, honestly. You know he hadn’t played a lot this year with San Antonio and he wasn’t making shots. I just don’t believe a guy can forget how to shoot. So we thought if we could get him in here and get him some looks, you know give him a chance to make some shots, they would go in. But, yeah, even his passing, just little things he does on the floor, he’s been great.”
Re has Finley picked up the defensive plays: “He’s getting that. You know, we do a lot of the same stuff that the Spurs do, so on that part of it he’s good. And the stuff that we don’t do that’s different, he’s missing a little bit. He’s only really had two real practices. So, you know, it’s going to come. But he’s pretty smart. He picks up things a lot quicker than most guys, I’ll say that.”

Celtics Forward Kevin Garnett
It seems like you guys were really hustling out there today
. “Yeah, a lot more energy in the building. Trying to play better at home, trying you know to get that energy back, that edge after yesterday’s loss. You know no one is happy about that. A totally different team today, came in with a lot more energy, a lot more aggressive, five guys who were aggressive. I thought that our bench was aggressive also. We had to talk amongst each other, and we just game out and played.”
Talk about the aggressiveness that happened today. “Yeah, we have been talking and talking. At some point trying to show some actions, so it’s just what it is. I’ll take it though, hands down night and day, as far as yesterday till today.”

Pierce’s aggressiveness out there and the team’s as a whole. “Rondo sets the tone, and everybody follows, and Paul is aggressive like he is, there isn’t a forward in the world that could play him, a player whoever could guard him. He’s hard to guard when he is aggressive like that. He sets the tone not just for the offense but for the defense also.”
What does this win at home mean for you. “ It’s good to get a win at home. It’s good to see Gino.”

Is it frustrating to win tonight after losing last night’s game, with inconsistency. “ It is frustrating. I not even going to make up a word. It is frustrating because you know what you are, you know what you are capable of. It doesn’t matter if it’s Cleveland or Detroit, That level of defense. I feel like tonight it was like an edge, you know it was like it was grimy, it was grudy, you know we have to play like that every night. You know we fell into that offense - categorized or showed that our energy comes from the offense and we can’t do that. Our energy has to come from the defense and let it trickle into some easy points. Tonight I’ll take it. It was a great game for us to sit back and look at it, and say hey this is what we are.”
What is the big picture facing adversity. “Well, the year isn’t over. Man, we still have a lot more basketball to play. You know Doc does a real good job about making sure that we stay focused on the game that is sitting in front of us. There is noting that we can do about the future, there is nothing we can do about injuries, just trying to keep guys healthy and gain this momentum going into the later parts of the month. Can’t do anything about the past. Every year is new, new personnel, new team, but you have to have the same consistencies and hard working defense.”

Groundhog Day
The Groundhog Day season for the Pistons continues playing the same loop … over … and over … and over. One game after falling 28 points behind Atlanta at halftime, the Pistons trailed Boston by 29 at the break on Monday. Oh, yeah. They also lost another starter to injury. Tayshaun Prince, who hadn’t missed a game due to injury in his first seven NBA seasons, is likely to sit out with his third separate injury on Tuesday night when the Cleveland Cavaliers – no, the schedule doesn’t cut them any breaks, either – visit The Palace. Prince, who missed 26 games with a ruptured disc early in the season and six more with a left knee injury shortly after returning, suffered another back injury early in Monday’s 119-93 loss when Jason Maxiell inadvertently kneed him in the back as Prince, after driving to the lane and shooting, stumbled and fell into Maxiell’s path. After writhing in pain and being administered by Arnie Kander on the court, Prince limped to the locker room and didn’t return. It apparently is unrelated to the disc injury and early reports projected no structural damage, merely intense pain. With the Pistons now sitting at 23-44, there’s no urgency to rush him back into the lineup until he’s comfortable. The Pistons fell to 7-26 on the road, losing their seventh straight away from home, on a night Boston put seven players in double figures and shot .622. “They were good, we were bad,” John Kuester said, about as succinct a summation as possible for this one. “They played an outstanding basketball game and we added to it. “ I’ll tell you this like I told our guys. We’ve got a number of basketball games left and our focus is to get better. There are certain games, certain halves where we haven’t improved, but our guys have worked pretty darn hard except for tonight. We didn’t get the same kind of effort. Now we’re going to come back tomorrow and we’ll be ready to play.”

In Prince’s absence, opportunity was created for rookies Austin Daye and DaJuan Summers. Daye had an uneventful five minutes in the first half, going scoreless with two turnovers, and John Kuester gave Summers the second-half start. Summers finished with 12 points, making 4 of 5 shots, including both of his 3-pointers. Daye wound up committing five of the Pistons’ 18 turnovers that Boston converted into 27 points. “DaJuan did a nice job,” Kuester said. “He shot the ball well, got a little bit better defensively. Austin also did some things offensively good, but he has five turnovers and you don’t want to have that many turnovers in this situation.” Will Bynum had 16 points and seven assists for the Pistons as Rodney Stuckey missed his fifth straight game since collapsing on the team bench in the March 5 loss at Cleveland. ESPN sideline reporter Lisa Salters reported during the game that Stuckey is wearing a heart monitor, though the Pistons have confirmed that three separate medical facilities have found no indications of heart problems. Kuester indicated to the media before Monday’s game that Stuckey could return to practice on Thursday. The Pistons are scheduled for an off day on Wednesday, as is customary after playing games on consecutive nights. Ben Wallace missed his seventh straight game with a right patella tendon strain and Jason Maxiell, starting in his place, responded with another double-double of 11 points and 10 boards in 30 minutes.

The Pistons, as they did at Atlanta on Saturday, dug themselves a deep early hole by getting beat downcourt for too many easy baskets. Their 11 first-half turnovers too often turned into layups or open jumpers for Boston. But unlike the Atlanta game, when the Pistons actually cut their deficit under double digits in the fourth quarter, they never made Boston think for a second a comeback was in the cards, falling 33 behind early in the third quarter before cutting it to 19. But after a tongue-lashing from Doc Rivers between quarters, Boston moved its lead back up to 28 in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter. The Pistons fell 18 points behind by late in a first quarter that saw them shoot 33 percent, commit six turnovers and send Boston to the foul line 12 times. It never got any better than that. “They beat us to the spot on both ends of the floor,” said Rip Hamilton, who had 14 points. “They’ve been doing what they’ve been doing the last couple of years. We just have to be better. They played well early. First quarter they set the tone of the game, feeding off their fans. Getting us to turn the ball over and getting in transition and making shots. I thought that was a big part of the game.”

TEAM COLORS
White Hot – Boston’s bench was very good, especially in the first half, but it was the Celtics’ starters that set the tone early and hammered the Pistons one day after a tough loss at Cleveland. Through three quarters, the foursome of Kevin Garnett, Kendrick Perkins, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce shot 20 of 32 and had 55 points. And when Boston’s bench outscored the Pistons by 11 points in the first four minutes of the fourth quarter to push a lead that had been cut to 19 back to 30, that gave Doc Rivers the luxury of letting those starters sit the rest of the way

BLUE COLLAR – Kevin Garnett is 33 and has played more games than anyone in the league other than Tim Duncan or Shaquille O’Neal and he’s coming off a knee injury that cost him the 2009 postseason. But nobody plays with more consistent intensity. And even with a 26-point lead late in the third quarter, there was Garnett beating the Pistons downcourt for a transition dunk. Garnett finished with 14 points on 6 of 9 shooting with eight boards and four assists in less than 23 minutes, sitting out most of the second half in the lopsided win.

RED FLAG – Take your pick. The 11 first-half turnovers were suicidal, especially coupled with lax transition defense. Boston’s bench bludgeoned Detroit’s, producing 26 points in the first half alone – none of them from Nate Robinson, who killed the Pistons two weeks ago, and only four from Rasheed Wallace. Or maybe the real red flag was another injury, this one to Tayshaun Prince. He got kneed inadvertently in the back by Jason Maxiell midway through the first quarter. Early reports are it shouldn’t be anything serious or structural, but the Pistons’ season of woe continues.

Prince leaves Celtics game
Detroit Pistons forward Tayshaun Prince left Monday's 119-93 loss against the Boston Celtics after colliding with teammate Jason Maxiell chasing a rebound in the first quarter. He did not return. Prince missed a short jumper and spilled hard to the court after he appeared to take a knee to the back from Maxiell while chasing his own miss. Boston scored at the other end of the floor on an alley-oop from Rajon Rondo to Kevin Garnett before the game was stopped with 4:56 to play in the first frame. Prince laid on the court for a considerable time while trainers attended to him. He eventually got to his feet and was assisted off the court.

Detroit has been ravaged by injuries this season, with Prince, Richard Hamilton, and Ben Gordon combining to miss 80 games this season. The team was already playing without both Ben Wallace and Rodney Stuckey, who has not returned to action since collapsing on the Detroit bench earlier this month. Wallace injured his knee in a game against Boston in Detroit earlier this month and has missed seven straight contests. "We've been hurt all year, and another guy goes down," said guard Richard Hamilton after the game. "It's one of those things where you're like, 'Come on, man. Are you serious?' But it's tough."

No Piston player has appeared in every game this season. Prince had missed a team-high 32 games, while Hamilton (27) and Gordon (21) were close behind.

Kobe Bryant scored 29 points and Pau Gasol added 26 to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to their ninth straight victory over the Golden State Warriors, 124-121 on Monday night.

Andrew Bynum added 19 points and 14 rebounds, and Lamar Odom had 17 points and 12 boards for the Lakers, who have won three straight following their first three-game losing streak in more than two years.

Curry scored 29 points for the Warriors, who have lost seven of eight. Coach Don Nelson remained six wins shy of breaking Lenny Wilkens' record mark of 1,337. The Warriors have only 16 games remaining this season, meaning Nelson's quest for the record might be pushed into next season if he is brought back as coach.

David West scored 24 points and the New Orleans Hornets snapped a seven-game road losing streak with a 108-100 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night, completing a four-game season sweep.

Darren Collison, New Orleans' first-round draft pick out of UCLA, had 18 points and 14 assists. Emeka Okafor, the only player to start all 68 games for the injury-depleted Hornets, had 14 rebounds and 12 points. James Posey, who wasn't able to travel with the team to Phoenix because of flulike symptoms, rejoined them at Staples Center but didn't play.

The Clippers lost their eighth straight game overall and 10th in their last 11. Baron Davis had 18 points and 17 assists after getting in early foul trouble.

http://www.detroitbadboys.com/2010/3/15 ... culate-the

Wait, I'm Trying to Calculate the Score: Celtics 119, Pistons 93
Just when I was starting to pity the Celtics a little for being in a worse position than the 2007-2008 Pistons and not having the slightest clue, they go and do something like this. As Other Matt alluded to in the comments, I'm not sure which was worse: the off-the-backboard, alley oop with the gratuitous hang time or KG celebrating it like he had never seen Nate Robinson dunk before (hint: it was definitely worse than Bynum's 20th assist the other night -- and I'd believe that if it was reversed). As if the Celtics needed to embarrass the Pistons any more than they did tonight.

But there is actually the dimmest of bright sides. All three Pistons rookies played well, especially the oft forgotten DaJuan Summers. He was one of the only Pistons that played competent basketball, some against the C's starters even. He finished with 12 points on 4-5 shooting (2-2 from downtown) in just under 19 minutes. Austin Daye contributed by hitting all three of his shots and blocking two shots in 22 minutes (he had five turnovers, though). Jerebko wasn't his same ol' self (his shoulder might be bothering him since it was patched up), but he was still hustling and solid. He finished with 10 points and three steals in just 21 minutes.

Another plus is we don't have to wallow in this one for too long -- in roughly 20 hours we get to see the Pistons play the Cavs.

Dorell Wright apologizes for DUI arrest
An emotional Dorell Wright returned to practice with the Heat on Monday, four days after being arrested on a DUI charge, and being suspended for two games. "It was way out of character for me," Wright said.

Wright is expected to be in uniform tonight when Miami hosts San Antonio. How much will Wright play? "We'll see," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.
