Welcome Shaun Hill?

Post#1 » by Liqourish » Sun Mar 14, 2010 9:34 pm

League sources are reporting that the Lions have traded our 2011 7th round draft pick for veteran QB Shaun Hill from the 49ers.

He's worked with Scott Linehan.

Discuss.

apparently day 3 of the draft will not be part of our plans

Im cool with it. Hes a vet. He can step in if needed. But he will be the clear #2 and can hopefully teach Matty something.

It's a 2011 7th round pick... and it might be the pick we got for trading Kevin O'Connell to the Jets. This move does not impact our draft this year at all... besides not even looking for a QB late.

We still have a pick in every round but the 6th.

We had two 7th next year... we gave up one of them. Not too bad at all.

All we're out this year is our 6th rd pick. We still have 6 picks and maybe a comp pick if any are left over, if Mayhew doesn't add picks.

2010 Detroit Lions offense:

QB- Matthew Stafford/Shaun Hill
WR- Calvin Johnson/Derrick Williams
LT- Jeff Backus
LG- ????????????
C- Dominic Raiola/Dan Gerberry
RG- Stephen Peterman/Jon Jansen
RT- Gosder Cherilus
TE- Brandon Pettigrew/Will Heller
WR- Nate Burleson/Bryant Johnson
FB- Jerome Felton
RB- ???????????/Maurice Morris/Aaron Brown

Hey guys, y'all know me. My football team is San Francisco, so I thought I would drop by and give you some insight on Shaun Hill.

First off Shaun Hill, is a FIERCE competitor (yes the caps are necessary for emphasis). Here is just one example of this. In a game 2 years ago, the 9ers were trailing and facing a 4th and 3 (or something close to that, don't remember the exact yardage) late in the game. The play call was a hot route screen to Arnaz Battle, well Battle managed to slip and fall b4 Shaun fired the pass. Shaun noticed Battle lying on the turf, then quickly turned to his 2nd option which was supposed to be Vernon Davis, but VD was blocking upfield for some reason (I don't think he got the play call right). By this time the pass rush was all over Shaun, he then took a step forward to get past the initial rush, then took off for the sticks. He got bottled up about a half a yard short of the sticks, then put his head down to try and get the extra foot. When he did his helmet popped off, and he didn't get any forward push. For Whatever reason the official didn't blow the whistle stopping the play. A fraction of a second later about 3 9er lineman barreled into the pile full speed to try and push Shaun forward. Shaun noticed the push and put his head down again and lunged forward as much as he could (remember he had no helmet at this time). The result was a 9er 1st down, and I became a Hill fan that day.

More positives: He doesn't take a lot of bad sacks that are on him. He does get sacked fairly often though because Frisco's has poor line play. But He has a pretty good sense of feeling pressure, and gets rid of the ball in a timely fashion. He also doesn't turn the ball very often, mostly because he doesn't go downfield (more on that in a minute)

That said, he is very, very average. There are worse ones out there, but he is not special. He is a decent backup, and a well below average starter. Don't let his record as a starter fool you, those games were won on Frank Gore's back. Most the time Shaun was under center, the offense tried to hide him. Most of his pass completions were off screens and Frank catching the ball out of the backfield. The dude features a Ramen Noodle for a throwing arm. He is pretty accurate with 5-10 yard routes, but with anything over 12 yards or so he will come up short quite often. I know thats not exactly good news for you guys, considering Megatron is about a good a downfield threat as there is in the league, but its just the way it is.

Shaun is also not much of an improvisational playmaker. He won't pick up much yardage with his legs if there, he'll try to he just gets caught and taken down very quickly. He also is a tad to quick to throw the ball away sometimes which is not necesarrily a bad thing. But its not good if you need him to wait a fraction of a second longer to allow the reciever to seperate. He won't put the ball in tight spots, and don't remember seeing him throw up a jump ball ever (Calvin prolly won't be real fond of him). He does have a good sense of his own limitations and these tendencies are a lot of the reason why he doesn't turn the ball over a lot. If Shaun is your starting QB going into a game, the gamplan really needs to be built on a heavy dose of the ground game, and a lot of screens and short crossing routes and passes to the halfbacks in the passing game. If you rely on him to win games for you, you will be dissapointed, but he is a good "manager" of the game (as much as I hate that concept).

He lost his job last year because the offense started to stagnate and they started losing astring of games after a fabulous start. The OC started to incorporate a more pass happy spread system. This was also about the same time Crabs finally signed and came to play, and they knew Shaun was not the Qube that would get the best outta Mike. Shaun's skill set didnt fit those kind of game plans at all, and they pulled him at halftime of the Colts game. Alex got the nod at that time, and hasn't looked back.... YET

I was actually surprised that he fetched anything on the trade market. He became very expendable when Frisco signed David Carr. He would have been 4th on the depth chart, behind Alex/Carr/Nate Davis. Davis is a project but the organization and most fans absolutely love the kid. It is a priority to get him as much reps as possible. Hill's agent was granted pernission to seek a trade a few days ago. Mini camp starts tommorrowand He was going to be released by the end of the weekend if a trade was not discovered. He would have been a free agent tommorrow, but a future 7th is not anything of substantial value. If the Lions brass targeted him and wanted him as your backup, I can see why they did the trade to prevent a team like St. Louis signing him for more $. I'm just happy Frisco got something for him.

You'll like him, he just won't wow you. But thats okay cuz ya'all got Stafford.

Shaun Hill has a better passing percentage, passers rating, and int percentage all better than Stafford for what its worth and that not saying much. The lions did not have to give up a 7th pick
he would have been released in a couple of days.

The reason the Lions didn't want to bring in a young player for that spot is because Matthew Stafford is going into his second season and he's going to need all the attention and practice reps as possible. A veteran quarterback can get prepared, in camp and the regular season, with far fewer reps than a younger player.

Idk if Shaun Hill has much to teach Stafford, but it's a decent move I guess.

I still wanna draft Tim Tebow. Mayhew said he wouldn't draft a "Quarterback" with the number 2 overall. He didn't say anything about a God.

A 7th in 2011, I'll take it.
And a fan of the niners says hes an average backup QB. Thats better then this team has had for a while. Culpepper didn't know how to handle it, Drew should be allowed to move on, and Orlovsky didn't know where the end zone ended.

If that's the case, he would have had his choice of numerous teams. The Lions wanted him and dealing a 2011 7th rounder was the best way to get him.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

the deal was our second 5th round pick for cromartie (he was not going to be released just traded). Chargers wanted Morris added in which was a deal breaker.Morris is 100% better than kevin smith and should be starting for the lions but our coach can't figure that one out yet. i would have thrown in kevin smith on that deal just to get rid of him.
