Celtics 119 Pistons 93: Detroit shows no life against Boston
Early in the first quarter Monday, Pistons forward Tayshaun Prince lay in the middle of the floor in pain after smashing his back into Jason Maxiell's knee. At that point the Pistons should have boarded Roundball One and began the trip back to Detroit. Actually, you can't convince me they didn't. Their 119-93 loss to the Celtics at Boston Garden was one of the most embarrassing ever.

The Pistons showed no heart, no pride and no desire in allowing the Celtics to pound them into submission. You know things are bad when a half-court team like the Celtics ran the Pistons off the floor with crowd-pleasing fast breaks and dunks. The Celtics have four of the oldest players in the league, so what they did to the Pistons was like Jed Clampett beating one of the Jonas Brothers in a track meet. ESPN announcers were begging for the Pistons to show life. Sadly, they didn't. The lasting memory of this game was Nate Robinson hanging from the rim during a dunk with less than a minute remaining. The Celtics were criticized for showboating. I criticize the Pistons for allowing it to happen.

The network couldn't switch to the Lakers-Warriors game fast enough. I didn't want to watch, but part of my job is to let you know how pathetic this team has become. The Pistons essentially played without Ben Wallace, Rodney Stuckey and Prince. What was left resembled a D-League team overdosed on sleeping pills. The Celtics shot 62 percent from the floor, passed out 34 assists and placed seven players in double figures. Will Bynum led the Pistons with 16. If the Pistons play that way tonight, LeBron James might as well stay in Cleveland. The Cavaliers won't need him.

Cavaliers-Pistons Preview
It's been nearly four months since the Cleveland Cavaliers lost to a team that's currently below .500 in the standings. Given the streak already working against them, it's hard to imagine the Detroit Pistons being the club to finally knock Cleveland off. The Cavaliers look to move a step closer to wrapping up the Central Division on Tuesday night by notching their 10th straight victory over the Pistons, who try to avoid their third blowout loss to an Eastern Conference contender in four days. Well on its way to a second consecutive 60-win season, Cleveland (52-15) has a 5 1/2 game lead on Orlando for the East's top seed and a three-game cushion on the Los Angeles Lakers for the league's best record. The Cavaliers have won 22 consecutive games against teams that currently have sub-.500 records since losing at Washington on Nov. 18, but they've also been holding their own against fellow playoff contenders as well.

After Cleveland won by 20 at Boston in late February, LeBron James finished with 30 points, eight rebounds and seven assists Sunday in the Cavaliers' 104-93 victory over the Celtics, which reduced their magic number to clinch the Central to two. "I thought we played the right way," coach Mike Brown told the NBA's official Web site. "When you play a team like Boston, the most aggressive team is going to win. I thought we were aggressive on both ends of the floor for most of the game." Plenty of that aggressiveness came from Anderson Varejao, who impressed Celtics coach Doc Rivers by finishing with 17 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. "One guy completely dominated the game and that was Varejao," Rivers said. Varejao had 16 points and 10 boards in Cleveland's 99-92 home win over Detroit (23-44) on March 5, the Cavaliers' ninth straight victory against the Pistons with last season's four-game, first-round sweep included. Since Shaquille O'Neal severely sprained his thumb on Feb. 25, Varejao has averaged 12.3 points and 9.0 rebounds - all while continually getting under the skin of opponents. "That's Andy," James said. "That's what he does. You know he's going to be active, going to play his butt off every single game and give it his all."

Varejao's effectiveness, however, wouldn't be possible without James, who's averaged 37.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists in a pair of wins against Detroit this season. The Pistons have played five games without Rodney Stuckey since the guard's scary collapse on the bench in Cleveland, and they won two of their first three without him at The Palace. On the road for their past two, however, things didn't go nearly as well. Detroit fell behind Atlanta by 28 points Saturday en route to a 112-99 loss, and it was never close in a 119-93 loss at Boston on Monday. "They were good. We were bad,'' Pistons coach John Kuester said. "It was one of the few games that our energy wasn't the way it should be, and I'm disappointed with the way we played.'' While Stuckey could be back practicing as soon as Thursday, Detroit may have to worry about another injury. Tayshaun Prince was kneed in the back early in Monday's game by teammate Jason Maxiell, and he didn't return. It seems unlikely that Prince, who had 23 points against Cleveland earlier this month, will play Tuesday. "We've been hurt all year, and another guy goes down,'' guard Richard Hamilton said. "It's one of those things where you're like, 'Come on, man. Are you serious?' But it's tough.''

Aaron Brooks, Luis Scola help Rockets rally
Aaron Brooks swished a jumper with 2.9 seconds left and scored 31 points to help the Rockets rally for a 125-123 victory over Denver on Monday night, ending the Nuggets' six-game winning streak.

Carmelo Anthony scored 45 points for the Nuggets, but missed a 3-point try at the buzzer. Luis Scola grabbed the final rebound and finished with 23 points and 11 boards.

Kevin Martin scored 29 points for Houston. Chauncey Billups and J.R. Smith added 17 each for the Nuggets.

March To No. 1 Pick
It's March Madness, baby! It's the big stage for some of college basketball's best players to show off their games. NBA scouts and general managers will be out in force over the next few weeks scouting everyone in the Big Dance.

A great March can really help a player's stock. Last season, Tyreke Evans and Jonny Flynn rode strong tournament performances to high lottery picks. In 2008, Derrick Rose moved past Michael Beasley on most NBA teams' boards with an excellent performance, while other players like Russell Westbrook and Brandon Rush helped themselves with strong tournament play as well.

In years past, Florida's Al Horford and Joakim Noah, LSU's Tyrus Thomas, Illinois' Deron Williams, Syracuse's Carmelo Anthony, Marquette's Dwyane Wade, Maryland's Chris Wilcox, Arizona's Richard Jefferson, Florida's Mike Miller, Miami University's Wally Szczerbiak and Connecticut's Richard Hamilton helped their draft position significantly in March. Who will take advantage of the national stage to supercharge their draft stock this year? We've talked to multiple NBA scouts and GMs over the course of the season to give you a look at the top five NBA prospects they'll be watching in each NCAA regional. We'll start with the East.

Return to Boston poignant for Pistons coach John Kuester
When Pistons coach John Kuester was asked several times earlier this month if he had experienced anything similar to Rodney Stuckey's collapse during the March 5 loss at Cleveland, he simply said yes. When pressed for details, he would politely decline and the questioning would move on. But with the Pistons in Boston to face the Celtics on Monday night, Kuester didn't have to look far for reminders about being touched earlier in his career by two similar but more serious incidents where athletes died -- including a scene where a college athlete practically died in his arms.

In September, 1982, Kuester was an assistant for a young Rick Pitino at Boston University, just under three miles from the Celtics' home arena. During a preseason workout, a senior point guard named Arturo Brown went down after contact with a teammate and was having trouble breathing. Someone else started CPR, but Brown started convulsing and vomiting, forcing that person to stop. Kuester then tried to continue resuscitation efforts. But it was for naught and Brown, the 21-year-old team captain, was pronounced dead at the scene when medical personnel arrived. An autopsy later revealed that Brown died of a heart attack. His heart was twice the normal size because of scar tissue. The second incident had more notoriety.

More than 10 years later, Kuester was the video guy with the Celtics and was taping Game 1 of a first-round playoff series against the Charlotte Hornets when budding Celtic superstar Reggie Lewis collapsed. That was the first glimpse at the heart defect that would later claim Lewis' life on July 27, 1993, at the age of 27. Kuester declined to talk at length about the two incidents after Monday morning's shootaround at the Garden, except to say it was hard for him to talk about Brown and Lewis. Brown's No. 44 was retired by Boston University and a nearby track and athletic center bears Reggie Lewis' name.

NOTEBOOK: Stuckey missed his fifth straight game Monday night and Ben Wallace (sore right patellar tendon) was out for a seventh straight game. Kuester said Stuckey could return to practice Thursday.

Pistons fall flat in national appearance
ESPN treated national NBA fans to a glimpse at just how far one of the league's model franchises has fallen. In the Pistons' second (and last) appearance on the worldwide leader this season, they fell behind by 28 points at halftime on their way to being hammered by the Celtics, 119-93, Monday. The Pistons (23-44) were a staple on national TV during their run of eight straight playoff appearances -- which included six Eastern Conference finals, two NBA Finals and an NBA championship. But neither ESPN, nor TNT, has much use for the Pistons this season.

With only 15 games left, it's quite obvious the Palace will stand quiet after April 12, when the Pistons conclude the home portion of their schedule with a visit from the Toronto Raptors. The Pistons actually put up a good effort their first appearance on ESPN on March 5, when they led for most of the game against the Cavs. But there wasn't even the slightest hint of a repeat from the Pistons Monday, as they fell behind by double digits. The Celtics (42-24), urged on by one of the most energetic crowds in the league, kept pouring it on as the lead grew to as many as 36 points and they used garbage time to act like the Harlem Globetrotters.

The game touched on a persistent theme, as Tayshaun Prince was injured when he took a knee to the back from Jason Maxiell. There was no major damage, but Prince didn't return, and his back was still pretty sore after the game. And then there was the shoddy defense that allowed the Celtics to shoot 62.2% -- a season high for a Pistons opponent. "They were good and we were bad," Pistons coach John Kuester said. "They did a great job of exploiting and we didn't react tonight."

Celtics 119, Pistons 93
What happened
: The Pistons dropped their ninth of 11 games -- embarrassingly this time in front a national ESPN audience -- their second and last performance of the season on the sports network. The Pistons fell behind by 16 at the end of the first quarter and the Celtics didn't stop until they led, 64-35, at halftime. It was garbage time after that. Will Bynum led the Pistons with 16 points and seven assists.

The big number: 62.2 ---- the shooting percentage of the Celtics -- a season high for a Pistons opponent.

The other side: Eight players finished in double figures for the Celtics -- led by Paul Pierce and Ray Allen, who scored 15 points each. Rasheed Wallace had eight points and four rebounds.

A bright spot: Because of an injury to Tayshaun Prince, rookie DaJuan Summers started the second half. He looked comfortable offensively, with 14 points and a 2-for-2 three-point effort.

Injury report: Rodney Stuckey missed his fifth straight game since his collapse at Cleveland on March 5, and Ben Wallace (sore right patellar tendon) missed his seventh straight. Prince was added to the injury list at the 4:53 mark of the first quarter when he took a knee to the back. He was down for several minutes while being attended by Pistons training staff. He had to be helped from the floor and did not return. He missed 26 games earlier this season because of a ruptured disk in his lower back. Pistons coach John Kuester said before the game that Chris Wilcox was still having trouble with a bad back.

About Last Night: Sometimes it feels like Jonas Jerebko is the only one going full speed
If you've watched the Detroit Pistons at all this year, then you love Jonas Jerebko. He exhibits the toughness, heart and hustle that this town loves. At the start of the second half, with the Pistons already down 29 points, it looked and felt like the team quit. It was especially bad on the defensive end, where Boston racked up six easy points on dunks and layups in the first couple minutes of the third quarter.

Despite the team's struggles, Jerebko kept hustling. He was a pest of defense, poking away passes and racking up three steals. On the offensive end, he continually attacked the rim, many times off the dribble. Jerebko led by example in the quarter, scoring 10 of the team's 35 points. The Celtics' lead shrunk from 29 at the start of the frame to 19 points at the end. He didn't play in the fourth quarter and, not surprisingly, the lead quickly ballooned back up to 30.

With more than $100 million committed to Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva over the next five seasons, it's tough to say what this team's identity will be in two or three years, but my vote is finding a way to repackaging Goin' to Work with Jerebko as the poster child.

Setting the tone: Using Kendrick Perkins' ball screens that were capable of blocking out the sun, Paul Pierce attacked the rim early and often. He got to the stripe for five free throws, and forced Jerebko to the bench with two fouls, in the first six mintues of the game.

Pierce and the Celtics did nearly all their damage in the paint in the opening quarter, jumping out to a 31-15 lead. I've attached the graphic from ESPN's shot chart just to give you a better appreciation of Boston's first-quarter domination.

Scary moment: In the first quarter, Tayshaun Prince sliced to the rim and took an off-balance layup. As he landed, he fell to the court and caught Jason Maxiell's knee to the middle of his back. Prince immediately clutched his lower back and struggled to leave the court for several minutes.

Prince already missed 32 games this season with a ruptured disc, and it was easy to fear the worst as he lay prone on the court. But ESPN reported the injury was unrelated and Prince was doing much better after being examined.

Sorry Charlie: Not a good night for Charlie Villanueva. He didn't score until the middle of the fourth quarter and finished with four points on 1-4 shooting.

What was far more obnoxious was Glen Davis beating Villanueva down the court for some easy baskets in the first half. In fact, this was kind of Detroit's problem all night long. Just because you walk it up the court at a snail's pace, doesn't mean your opponent will do the same. Get back on defense!
