The Blazers have fired Tom Penn.

Penn's dismissal comes nearly 10 months after Penn was promoted to vice president of basketball operations.

It is unknown why Penn was fired, but it is believed to have come from owner Paul Allen and not Kevin Pritchard.

Penn was pursued heavily last year for the general manager position with the Minnesota Timberwolves, but turned down the job following his promotion from the Blazers.

His expertise with league rules and the salary cap allowed the Blazers to gain a trade exception in the 2007 NBA draft, which allowed them to make a trade with Phoenix for the rights to Rudy Fernandez.

Around the league he is widely regarded as a salary cap expert.

Update: Citing sources, Wendell Maxey reports that Penn is believed to have been in talks for the Clippers job.

According to a source that spoke with Columbian, there had been rumblings in recent weeks within the organization that Penn's job was at stake. The primary reason was that Penn had a tendency to rub many of those he worked with the wrong way, the source said, and was seen as being a "ladder climber."

I think Taylor replaced Kahn at the perfect time. McHale had balls and traded for Love, something he still doesn't get any love for. That trade of course gave us the ability to draft Rubio. I think Kahn may have kept Mayo based on the fact that he was considered the BPA (Kahn seems obsessed with that). Kahn did the best move in 2009, but his next draft choice was a head scratcher. I never believed him when he said we could have a Flynn and Rubio backcourt. Drafting Flynn is why I believe Rubio stayed in Spain. I'll give him a pass because Flynn isn't too shabby and in the end that could make the Timberwolves better in the future as our draft picks get more valuable.

I personally would have drafted Curry at #6, but in all fairness I was under the impression that he was a combo guard. I'm not going to say how I'm smarter than every NBA scout because the truth is I watch a few games, read the scouting reports on DX and NBAdraft, compare mock drafts, and look at the stats. On a related note I was obsessed with Casspi and wanted to draft him with our #18, but I may have drafted Holiday instead because he was considered by many to be about the #10 pick (truth is I really didn't know anything about him other than him being a good defender). I was a bit upset when he was drafted directly before our #18 pick. Maybe I should send my application to work in the front office. I did after all win quite a few titles when I played in Franchise Mode with NBA Live.

I hated the Kahn hiring initially, but after seeing what he's done so far, and even more so with this Tom Penn news, I'm DEFINITELY glad we ended up with the Kahn Man.

What has done that has you so impressed? Outside of Rubio he's been average, and that's probably being generous.

That's pretty much where I'm at. He's done several things I liked and several that made me scratch my head. Overall I'm fairly encouraged, but that could change pretty quickly depending on how he plays his hand this summer.

This. I like that Kahn seems to have a vision (and I would assume a plan). This was a lost season from the get go and everybody knew it. This coming offseason is what will make or break the Kahn man. Hopefully he will show that he is savvy enough to pull off his vision. We'll just have to wait and see. I do feel better about not hiring Penn, now.

Hahaha, now they are saying Penn created a phantom deal from Minnesota to get a raise with the Blazers position? Man, they are making this guy out be some conniving mother.

I've liked every move he's made so far except for three, and I'll talk about those here...

-Flynn - Now I wouldn't say I don't like this move, but I wouldn't say I DO like it either. Kind of neutral. "Everyone" likes to talk about Jennings and Curry, but the conveniently forget a few things in order to justify their argument.
---Jennings is a complete chucker that's useless without the ball in his hands. 16/6 is nice and all, but not when you're shooting less than 37% from the field, and actually less from 2pt then from 3pt, while taking over 15 shots per game. That screams of a guy who can't finish, which is what I was saying before the draft, yet everyone talked about his amazing athleticism. He's also taking more 3's than FT's. Chucker, who can't finish, or get to the line. Sebastian Telfair. Now put him in Rambis's system and he'd be hated more than Flynn. Plus his attitude would be terrible to deal with.
---Curry's skillset would definitely fit better than Flynn's, but he canceled a workout with the Wolves and refused to re-schedule. I'm fine with passing on him simply because of that.
---I strongly believe that Kah was going after the rumored Flynn/Johnson for Evans trade, which would have been orgasmic.

-Q for Blount - Really this is such a minor deal that one can't complain much. Yeah Q would have actually contributed on the Wolves, and would have meant no Sasha, but these were all expiring deals and none are going to be here in 2010/11 so no big deal. Who knows if the goodwill will help in the future, but it can't hurt.

-Releasing Atkins - He definitely could have been used to help a team get under the lux, so I'm bummed about that, but it's more goodwill stuff, and really? Big deal.

Otherwise I'm a fan of everything so far. I also have faith in him going forward.

McHale never seemed to have a plan. It was always a quick fix. Kahn seems to have a plan. That alone is enough to give me a boner.

This. I don't have a problem with Hollins or Sessions being signed. I have a problem with the way they've been used, and their fit due to the pieces around them.
