Mack hit a career-high seven 3-pointers and scored 18 of his 25 points after halftime Thursday, leading fifth-seeded Butler to a 77-59 victory over UTEP in the first round of the NCAA tournament's West Regional.

Gordon Hayward added 13 points and Matt Howard had 11 as the Bulldogs (29-4) won their 21st straight game to extend the sport's longest active winning streak -- but only after a dynamic rally from a six-point halftime deficit.

Derrick Caracter had 20 points and nine rebounds for UTEP, which won 16 straight games and a league title before a tournament loss to Houston last Saturday. Randy Culpepper added 16 points, but the Miners' defense couldn't stop the patient outside shooting of the Bulldogs, who advanced in the NCAA tournament for the third time in four years.

Fredette went on to score 37 points and hit two 3-pointers in double overtime to seal the Cougars' 99-92 win over 10th-seeded Florida on Thursday, the first time they've reached the second round of the tournament in 17 years.

Michael Loyd Jr. added a career-high 26 points, pushing BYU to a lead it would hold until a late second-half rally by Florida. Loyd also scored all six of the Cougars' points in the first overtime and hit a 3-pointer to start the second overtime that put BYU ahead to stay.

Kenny Boynton scored 27 points for the Gators (21-13), helping to rally them from a 13-point second-half deficit in their first NCAA tournament game since back-to-back national titles in 2006 and 2007.

Udoh had 20 points and 13 rebounds, and Baylor dominated the last three minutes of a 68-59 victory Thursday in the first round of the South Regional.

LaceDarius Dunn scored 13 points for Baylor, 10 in the second half. His short, spinning fade and one-handed jam fueled a late 8-0 run that clinched it.

Gilberto Clavell had 23 points and Preston Brown added 13 for 14th seed Sam Houston State (25-8), which tied it at 55 on a short floater by Ashton Mitchell with 3:48 to go.

Thomas hit a 15-footer as the buzzer sounded and 13th-seeded Murray State stunned No. 4 seed Vanderbilt 66-65 on Thursday in an NCAA tournament opener in the West Regional.

When it went down, Murray State's players sprinted to the other end of the floor and fell into a celebratory pile beneath the basket. Vandy star A.J. Ogilvy slumped to the floor in defeat, while his teammates crouched near their bench in utter disbelief. "This is probably the biggest shot I've ever hit in my life," said Thomas, who wound up with 11 points, six rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots. "It felt so good, I knew it was going in."

B.J. Jenkins hit a key 3-pointer with 2:51 to play and finished with 14 points and five assists, and Miles scored 17 for the Racers, who shot 7 for 15 from long range and crashed the offensive glass to create second chances. They held a 39-33 rebounding advantage -- 15 of those offensive boards.

As Carleton Scott's 3-pointer sailed toward the hoop and rattled around the rim, Old Dominion's Keyon Carter was already bracing for the possibility of a tie game. Then the shot popped out, giving the Monarchs the NCAA tournament's first upset. "I said, 'Here we go again.' Those guys made a lot of clutch 3s," Carter said. "I was kind of thinking overtime, but gratefully, it rimmed out."

Scott's 3-pointer didn't fall, and Luke Harangody's putback wasn't enough for sixth-seeded Notre Dame on Thursday. Old Dominion held on for a 51-50 victory in the first round of the South Regional, its first NCAA tournament win since beating Villanova in triple overtime in 1995.

Ben Hansbrough, whose brother Tyler won the national title at North Carolina last year, scored 17 points for Notre Dame. Hassell scored 15 points for Old Dominion.

Pistons-Pacers Preview
The Indiana Pacers have used a string of solid performances from Danny Granger in a four-game win streak over the Detroit Pistons.Granger, though, may not be available when the Pacers try to hand the Pistons an eighth straight road loss Friday night.Indiana (22-46) played without Granger in a 99-94 loss at Cleveland on Wednesday, one night after he took an inadvertent elbow to his upper right cheek in the final minute of a 99-94 win over Charlotte. There is no timetable for his return. "It seems like he's going to be all right," coach Jim O'Brien said. "Hopefully, he'll be back in the lineup quickly. You never know when someone got hit that hard in the head area, you always have to be concerned." The Pacers are 7-13 without Granger, who missed 16 games due to a right foot injury. The Pistons (23-45) are no doubt hoping not to see Granger since he averaged 28.8 points against them over the last two seasons, including 24.5 in four straight victories. Detroit had won the previous eight meetings.

Indiana hasn't won five straight over its Central Division rival since a six-game run Feb. 23, 2000-Feb. 15, 2001, and enters this game playing well at Conseco Fieldhouse. "We've won our last three home games, so things are starting to pick up for us," O'Brien said. O'Brien's club hung in against the league-leading Cavaliers, as Roy Hibbert scored 20 points and Troy Murphy added 19 and 15 rebounds for his fourth straight double-double. Hibbert and Murphy have been solid in two wins over Detroit this season, combining for 52 points and 39 rebounds. Detroit has lost three straight after falling 113-101 at home to Cleveland on Tuesday. The Pistons led heading into the fourth quarter before allowing 38 points. The effort came one night after a dispiriting 119-93 loss at Boston in which Detroit trailed by 29 at halftime."We were trying to redeem ourselves, so this is very frustrating," forward Charlie Villanueva said Tuesday. "It's encouraging to see us compete like this, but it is still another loss."

Richard Hamilton scored 24 points and Villanueva added 16 against the Cavaliers as the Pistons fell to 2-10 versus division opponents. "We competed," coach John Kuester said. "Guys gave everything they had. We just had some things not go our way at the end, but I'll tell you this: I was very proud of the way our guys played." Detroit is expecting starting point guard Rodney Stuckey to play Friday night, two weeks after he collapsed on the bench during a game against the Cavs. Stuckey, who has sat out the last six contests, is averaging 17.1 points and 5.0 assists.

Ali Farokhmanesh hit a 3-pointer from the left wing with 4.9 seconds left to lift ninth-seeded Northern Iowa over UNLV 69-66 on Thursday night in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Farokhmanesh found himself open after Kwadzo Ahelegbe had chewed up the majority of the clock following Oscar Bellfield's tying 3-pointer for UNLV with 35 seconds remaining. Johnny Moran reversed the ball to Farokhmanesh, who drained the jumper with the shot clock running down.

Farokhmanesh finished with 17 points, including three 3-pointers in the second half, and Ahelegbe added 13 points as the Panthers (29-4) snapped a 20-year drought in the NCAA tournament.

Armon Bassett scored 32 points to help No. 14 seed Ohio beat Georgetown 97-83 and become the second team seeded in the teens to win in the NCAA tournament on Thursday night.

Ohio joined 13th-seeded Murray State, which knocked off Vanderbilt 66-65 at the buzzer, as the two big upset winners on Thursday.

Chris Wright led the Hoyas (23-11) with 28 points. Georgetown coach John Thompson III said a day earlier his team was playing their best basketball of the season. It certainly didn't extend into the tournament opener.

Patrick Patterson scored 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting, including a handful of dunks, while John Wall added 17 points and 11 assists for the Wildcats (33-2).

Micah Williams had 18 points for ETSU (20-15), which trailed by as much as 30 in the first half and never threatened in the second.

Jazz G Williams is game-time decision
Utah guard Deron Williams has a bruised left shoulder and mild left ankle sprain and is a game-time decision for Friday at Phoenix.

The Jazz say Williams had an MRI on his left shoulder on Thursday, which confirmed the bruise. He played through the injury in a win Wednesday over Minnesota, finishing with nine points and 11 assists. He also rolled his ankle late in the first quarter against the Timberwolves, but was able to return in the second.

Forward Andrei Kirilenko is listed as questionable for Friday with a strained left calf, which he aggravated in the third quarter Wednesday. Guard Wesley Matthews has a mild ligament sprain in his left knee and will also be a game-time decision in Phoenix.

Quincy Pondexter drove for a tiebreaking bank shot with 1.7 seconds left, and 11th-seeded Washington extended its remarkable late-season run into the NCAA tournament with an 80-78 victory over Marquette in the first round of the East Regional on Thursday night.

Pondexter scored 18 points and Isaiah Thomas 19 as the Huskies (25-9) won their eighth straight game in dramatic fashion, rallying from a 15-point deficit with 13 1/2 minutes left.

Washington will face the winner of third-seeded New Mexico's late game against Montana at the Shark Tank, which was filled with Huskies fans.

Marcus Morris scored 26 points, Sherron Collins added 18 and No. 1 overall seed Kansas survived a 90-74 win over scrappy Lehigh in the Midwest Regional on Thursday night.

The Jayhawks led by just six in the first half and didn't pull away until midway through the second to keep from becoming the greatest Goliath to be crossed off the brackets on a wild opening day of the NCAA tournament.

Lehigh made its fourth NCAA appearance a memorable one, putting a scare into the nation's No. 1 team.

Pistons' Rodney Stuckey and Ben Wallace likely will play Friday against Pacers
Rodney Stuckey and Ben Wallace will not be in the starting lineup Friday night for the Detroit Pistons. But they very likely will play. Pistons coach John Kuester said both players will come off the bench initially when they return to action, which could happen in Friday's game at Indiana. "There's a very good chance for both of those guys," Kuester said Thursday after practice.

Stuckey went through his first full practice since collapsing on the bench March 5 during a game at Cleveland. Kuester said Stuckey didn't hold back."He went through everything," Kuester said. "He took part in everything and did a great job, as did Ben Wallace." Stuckey didn't have much to say as he ducked into the locker room after practice."I'm good," he said. "I feel fine." Kuester said he likes what he sees out of his young point guard."He looks as rested as I've ever seen him, so that's the good news," Kuester said. "He was very active in practice."

With Stuckey and Wallace coming off the bench, Will Bynum and Jason Maxiell will remain in the starting lineup. Bynum has averaged 10.1 points, 6.6 assists and 2.0 turnovers in six starts since Stuckey left the lineup, and Maxiell has averaged 10.9 points and 11.2 rebounds in eight starts in place of Wallace.

Melvin Goins made his fourth 3-pointer with 19 seconds left after San Diego State cut the deficit to one point, and Tennessee held off the Aztecs 62-59 on Thursday night to advance to the second round of the NCAA tournament's Midwest Regional.

Goins and J.P. Prince scored 15 points apiece for Tennessee on coach Bruce Pearl's 50th birthday.

D.J. Gay had 16 points for No. 11 seed San Diego State (25-9). Kawhi Leonard scored 12 with 10 rebounds, but he missed a well-guarded 3-pointer at the buzzer that would have tied it.

Pistons face familiar foes
The Pistons play two of their next three games against the Pacers, who had an easy time against Detroit in the first two meetings this season.

Indiana beat Detroit 105-93 at The Palace of Auburn Hills in January in a game that was not as close as the score indicates, then won 107-83 in February at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Danny Granger scored 25 points for the Pacers in each of those games.

Rematch with Cavaliers
In between a pair of games against the Pacers -- on the road Friday and at home Tuesday -- the Pistons will have a rematch against Cleveland.

The Pistons nearly pulled off an upset Tuesday before losing 113-101 to the Cavaliers, who have the best record in the NBA. That game came one day after the Pistons were routed 119-93 at Boston.

"Our guys were embarrassed by the way we played against Boston, and they responded," Kuester said. "That was a good sign, to see us come out and play with the intensity that we did and give ourselves an opportunity against probably the best team in the NBA in Cleveland."

Ishmael Smith's pull-up jumper from about 17 feet out with 1.3 seconds remaining in overtime gave ninth-seeded Wake Forest an 81-80 win over No. 8 seed Texas in the first round of the NCAA tournament Thursday night.

The Demon Deacons (20-10) twice blew double-digit leads in regulation, but in overtime they rallied from a 76-68 deficit. They still trailed by four in the final minute, but a 3-pointer by Ari Stewart with 15.9 seconds left made it 80-79.

The Longhorns (24-10) completed a puzzling collapse after being ranked No. 1 in the country in January.

Roman Martinez had 19 points, six rebounds and four assists and third-seeded New Mexico overcame a shaky start to beat 14th-seeded Montana 62-57 in the NCAA tournament's East Regional on Thursday night.

Darington Hobson added 11 points, 11 rebounds and six assists while playing with a sprained left wrist for the Lobos, who used a 17-0 run after halftime to briefly break open the game after trailing by a point at the break.

Martinez made three 3-pointers, including one with 7:44 to play, and Dairese Gary converted seven free throws over the final 3:36 as New Mexico staved off an upset to continue a special season that began with being picked to finish fifth in the Mountain West Conference.
