KL: As tough as it’s been at times to evaluate the team through all the injuries, with Q, as a first-year head coach, has it made it tougher to evaluate him or have you been able to see things in the way he’s handled adversity?

JD: I think he’s juggled adversity as well as can be. I’ve never seen him walk out there on the court feeling sorry for himself. I’ve seen him walk out there with three, four starters out and coach as though he expects us to play at the same level, no matter what. I think it’s been great to see him have to deal with so much adversity in his first year. Great to see that. A lot of times you can go along with someone and you never get to see them deal with adversity for a while and you don’t really know. It kind of dropped in his lap the first year.

KL: The first day.

JD: Yeah, first game. First game. So I think what you’ve seen with him is a guy that’s going to be consistent and is not all over the map and is mature and is going to show up and be a professional about how he handles his business every day.

KL: Here’s another one I asked earlier this year. You said at the end of last year that you’d spent more time on off-court issues than ever before and didn’t intend to have to do that again. Losing, as I’m sure you know from your playing days, has a way of making things bubble to the surface more quickly. Are you still pleased on that front?

JD: Listen, sometimes when you’re winning, it becomes cloudy as to what you need to do because winning can sometimes mask issues. Losing uncovers all of that. Sometimes losing makes it easier to deal with issues than winning does. You may see some issues and you’re winning and no one else sees it. They just see the W’s and the losses. When you lose, a lot of times there is no more confusion about what you need to do. In a situation like this, you get to evaluate some things with a very clear mind. A win here or there is not clouding your judgment as to what you need to do.

KL: Is that where you feel you’re at – there is that clarity right now?

JD: Yeah, when you lose like we have sometimes and you get to evaluate players throughout the course of a season – like I said earlier, you see the benefits and you see the flaws – and it allows you to judge more clearly. I’m telling you, ask any GM in any sport, sometimes winning masks issues that you probably should deal with, but the W’s allow you to say, we can probably get through this.

KL: What is the value of these final 14 games for you? Are there players you’ll be watching more carefully or any particular area of the game you’ll be watching more closely?

JD: As I’ve said to Q, I said the only thing I will be disappointed in is if we don’t approach these last 14 games like we’re preparing for the playoffs. That should never change. That should never change – your approach, your professionalism, the way you go about your business, that never, ever, ever changes. That’s part of your culture. And so you have a season that’s filled with injuries and you lost and it’s the first time you didn’t make the playoffs in almost a decade, don’t allow that to change your approach. So for these last 14 games, I expect us to come out and play the exact same way we played last night against Cleveland. I don’t expect us to play like we did against Boston, I don’t expect us to play like we did in Atlanta. That’s unacceptable. Don’t care about the record. The record does not dictate how you approach the game. These last 14 games, if we give the same type of effort we gave against Cleveland last night, I’m OK.

Detroit Pistons (23-45) at Indiana Pacers (22-46), 7 p.m.
The Indiana Pacers have won four straight times against the Detroit Pistons, and Danny Granger has played a large role in each of those victories. The Pacers may have to try to extend that streak without the services of their leading scorer, however, when the two Central Division rivals square off tonight at Conseco Fieldhouse. Granger was elbowed in the cheek during the late stages of Indiana's 99-94 home triumph over Charlotte on Tuesday and sat out the Pacers' game at Cleveland the following night. The 2009 All-Star, who's averaging 23.1 points and 5.7 rebounds this season, is not expected to be available for this evening's test as well.

The Pacers were able to hold their own against the powerful Cavaliers despite missing both the standout forward and point guard T.J. Ford, but still wound up on the short end of a 99-94 decision on Wednesday. Indiana trailed by 16 points entering the fourth quarter before outscoring Cleveland 29-18 in the final period to make the score close. "I think that we rallied together as a team towards the end," said center Roy Hibbert, who led the Pacers with 20 points. "We got back into it. The Cavs are an extremely good team, but I think when we play a game together we can really be a dangerous team, because we have extremely good three-point shooters and we've got guys who can slash to the basket and score in the paint." Troy Murphy finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds in the loss, with rookie A.J. Price adding 14 points off the bench. Ford missed his third straight contest with a sore left groin and is unlikely to be available tonight as well. Granger has averaged 24.5 points during Indiana's four-game streak against the Pistons, in which two of those victories have taken place this season. Detroit has lost three times at Conseco Fieldhouse over that winless stretch, including a 107-83 setback on February 5.

The Pistons have dropped their last three overall games as well after being handed a 113-101 defeat by the Cavaliers on Tuesday. Detroit held a 76-75 edge after three quarters, but was outscored by a 38-25 margin in the fourth. Richard Hamilton led the Pistons with 24 points and Jason Maxiell posted a double-double in the loss, ending with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Tayshaun Prince had a good all-around game as well for Detroit, compiling 15 points, eight assists and seven rebounds on the night. The Pistons have now lost 10 of their last 12 outings but could get a boost tonight from the anticipated return of guard Rodney Stuckey. The third-year pro, averaging career-bests of 17.1 points and 5.0 assists per game in 2009-10, has not played since collapsing on the bench of a March 5 game against Cleveland after experiencing a dizzy spell. Stuckey was cleared to play earlier this week.

Still no diagnosis for Pacers' Hansbrough
Indiana Pacers rookie forward Tyler Hansbrough is miserable.

But that's what Hansbrough has dealt with this season. His latest problem -- an inner ear infection and/or possible concussion -- has kept him sidelined for most of the past two-plus months. The Pacers aren't expecting him to return this season."It really is miserable for me to be dealing with this injury," Hansbrough said recently. "I've never had an injury like this where it's kept me out a long time. It's something I'm trying to get over and get healthy."

Hansbrough's current diagnosis remains a mystery. The team has been calling it an inner ear infection since late December. Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said two weeks ago that it possibly could be a concussion, caused when Hansbrough took a hit in a game in Boston in late December. "It could be a combination of those two. We're not really sure," Hansbrough said.

Harris and Yi expected to return to Nets vs. Raptors
The New Jersey Nets are getting reinforcements in their bid to avoid the worst record in NBA history. Point guard Devin Harris and power forward Yi Jianlian practiced Friday and both said they will play for the Nets (7-61) on Saturday against the Toronto Raptors at the Izod Center.

Harris has missed the last two games with an upper respiratory infection. Yi has missed the last six with a sprained left ankle."Yi made it through practice. Devin made it through practice, so at this point I think we will have everyone," interim coach Kiki Vandeweghe said.

The Nets need to win three of their final 14 games to avoid tying or breaking the league's record for single-season futility, a 9-73 mark set by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1972-73.

Different standard
I can understand fans' frustration over Charlie Villanueva's play most of this season, but I'm puzzled by the lack of that same frustration about Ben Gordon's lack of production lately. Granted, Gordon was hurt for a while. But he's had more than enough time to get back into a rhythm, and has not been shooting the ball well at all. Gordon hasn't looked like the player he was with the Bulls. Not at all. For some reason, Pistons fans seem more patient with Gordon.

Pistons coach John Kuester: Rodney Stuckey and Ben Wallace 'are both going to play'
Detroit Pistons coach John Kuester said before this morning's shootaround at Conseco Fieldhouse that point guard Rodney Stuckey and center Ben Wallace will play tonight against the Indiana Pacers."As of now, they are both going to play," Kuester said.

How much they will play is still up in the air."I think they feel good," Kuester said. "Ben is a concern because he's coming off an injury and Rodney has to make sure his wind is correct, so we'll just play it by ear."

Wallace has sat out the past eight games with a right patella tendon strain. Stuckey has not played since collapsing March 5 during a game at Cleveland.

Detroit Pistons Draft Dreams: Patrick Patterson
Patrick Patterson is more than just a guy who may or may not have eaten a booger on national TV.The Kentucky forward is one of four UK players with a shot at being a top 15 pick in the NBA draft and a guy who could turn into a legit stretch four at the NBA level. I know, I know. What's the need if the Pistons already have Charlie Villanueva? Well, Patterson also projects as a pretty good rebounder and decent shot blocker.

Measurables: 6-9, 235 pounds, junior F/C at Marshall.
Stats: 14.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, 58 percent field goal percentage in 33.3 minutes per game.
Projected:10th (DraftExpress); 9th (NBADraft.net).
Why he fits: He has size and, like all UK players this year, great athleticism. His numbers are down a bit this season, but remember, he went from being a key guy on a not very good team last year to probably the third option on a very talented team this year. He's also sharing the paint with DeMarcus Cousins, which will certainly take away some of his touches. Patterson's adapted extremely well going from primary score to complimentary player. He's a good leader and a steadying influence for a team prone to mistakes because of youth. He's a nice contrast with Cousins, who sometimes lets his emotions get the best of him. Most impressively, Patterson has added a pretty reliable three-point shot this season, shooting 37 percent on 58 attempts. His first two years at Kentucky he only attempted four three-pointers.
Why he doesn't fit: He's probably not a center in the NBA. He certainly has a post game, although he'll have to work on his strength like most of the young bigs who are potentially in the draft this season. The Pistons need size and Patterson has undeniable talent and upside, but as I said above, some of his skills duplicate what Charlie Villanueva does. I think Patterson will be a better defensive player than Villanueva is, but Patterson is a bit of a finesse forward rather than the hard-nosed, physical post player most Pistons fans covet.
Why I'd take him: Unless that Pistons pick at 1 or 2, the plan should be to take the best available big. Depending on where their pick ends up, there's a shot that's Patterson. There are probably guys with more upside, but Patterson is a mature player (he could've entered the draft last year but stayed in school despite all the changes coming to the Kentucky program) who would be an upgrade over most of what the Pistons have up front right now.

Pacers might be without Danny Granger tonight against Pistons
The Indiana Pacers could be shorthanded tonight when they take on the Detroit Pistons.

Pacers forward Danny Granger might not play after being elbowed in the cheek Tuesday in a win against Charlotte. Granger sat out Wednesday when the Pacers played Cleveland.

Granger, who averages 23.1 points and 5.7 rebounds, had 25 points in each of the two games between the teams this season. The Pacers won both of those games.

Pistons' Austin Daye waiting for Gonzaga to play before talking trash to teammates
Detroit Pistons coach John Kuester, a former standout player at North Carolina, is stuck following his alma mater in the NIT. So are former UConn stars Richard Hamilton, Ben Gordon and Charlie Villanueva. DaJuan Summers saw Georgetown go down Thursday in the biggest upset of the first day of the NCAA tournament. So you might expect rookie forward Austin Daye to talk a little trash in the locker room as Gonzaga prepares for its first-round NCAA tournament game Friday night.

Not so fast, Daye said before the shootaround Friday morning at Conseco Fieldhouse.“I'm just hoping we get out of the first round,” he said. “I'm going to wait until tonight. I'm not actually going to be able to see the game, but then after that, I'll be able to talk.” Summers chimed in and asked Daye who Gonzaga will play. “Florida State,” Daye said. “We got a 9-8 seed, not like a 3-11.” Summers pointed out that third-seeded Georgetown actually lost to a 14 seed, not an 11 seed.“Sorry,” Daye said, then added something along the lines of, “I was just trying to make it sound better.”

So maybe he's not waiting until Friday night after all. For the record, No. 1 seed Kentucky (Tayshaun Prince) won its first-round game Thursday, while fourth-seeded Maryland (Chris Wilcox) and 10th-seeded Georgia Tech (Will Bynum) also play first-round games Friday. Daye helped Gonzaga reach the Sweet 16 in the NCAA tournament last season, where his team fell to eventual national champion North Carolina. Daye scored 10 points in each of Gonzega's three tournament games last year.

Jon Leuer scored 20 points and Trevon Hughes added 19, and fourth-seeded Wisconsin held off No. 13 seed Wofford 53-49 in the opening round of the NCAA tournament Friday.

Wisconsin (26-9) advanced to the second round of the East Regional against 12th-seeded Cornell, which upset Temple earlier Friday.

Jamar Diggs led the Terriers, making their first appearance in the NCAA tournament, with 13 points. Noah Dahlman added 10.
