LAKELAND, Fla. -- Reliever Casey Fien was claimed off waivers this afternoon by the Boston Red Sox.
The Detroit Tigers removed Fien from their 40-man roster last week to make room for outfielder Johnny Damon, and had to either trade him or expose him to waiver claims. If he had not been traded or claimed, he could have been sent outright to Triple-A Toledo.
Toledo Fien pitched 11 1/3 innings over nine appearances for the Tigers last year, allowing 10 earned runs on 13 hits with six walks and nine strikeouts. He also had arguably his best season as a pro at Triple-A Toledo, where he led the Mud Hens with 14 saves. He went 2-1 with a 3.41 ERA, allowing 51 hits over 58 innings while striking out 66 batters. He gave up just 15 walks, a continued sign of his command strength.
Casey Fien can throw strikes, which is more than many of the "hot prospects" in the Tiger system can do. Fien projects to be a solid middle reliever in the major leagues.
And he's 26 years old, ". Dolsi and now Fien gone while Willis hangs on. There HAS to be some insurance consideration with Dontrelle. I'd love it if he could regain his old form, but I've given up all hope of that long ago
Bad moves to let, first, Dolsi (White Sox)
and now Fien (Red Sox)
get away for nothing.
Chad Durbin, another Tiger's bullpen
piece had fun pitching in the World Series
for the Phillies last year and also walked
for nothing.
Fien only gave up one run the entire spring
training last year and should have made the team
coming out of Spring last year.
Instead, Tigers are wasting roster spots with
Willis and one year wonder Robertson.
Seau makes more $$$$ and could have been traded too.
I am continually surprised and puzzled by '

Willis and Robertson have big money contracts, just can't waive them.
Casey Fien was crap. Who cares that he's gone. He was never going to be a legit part of our rotation with everyone healthy anyway.

Casey Fien, you are worried about Casey Fien? And Freddy Dolsi I take it. Two mid 20 right handers, that's what you are concerned about?
The Phillies didn't win the World Series because Chad Durbin was on their team.
And since the need to bring every possible example up. Where is the mention of Chris Lambert?

Who? LOL.
How many other teams passed on Fien before the Sox decided to take a flyer on him? Does he even stay there?

Every team but the Yankees, Los Angeles Angels, and LA Dodgers (possibly, they had the same record as the Red Sox) passed on him.
The one that impresses me the most is the Nationals passing on him since they seem to try anything to add pitching depth.
I'm guessing Fien will be a starter, for their Triple A affiliate.

Now the Red Sox waived Fien and the Blue Jays claimed him. The Sox had him less then a week.
Tigers really lost a dandy of a player there.
At this rate he'll be pitching for the Mud Hens by opening day.

He pitched well in the minors. I would have liked to keep him if we could have just in case he's a good pitcher in the majors as well.

Fien finds his way back to Tigers
LAKELAND, Fla. -- Casey Fien is back with the Tigers, three weeks and two waiver claims after they tried to get him into their Minor League camp.
The bizarre journey of the right-handed reliever came full circle Friday night, when the Tigers agreed to terms with him on a Minor League contract. He'll report to the Tigers' Minor League camp, where his adventure across the Grapefruit League began a few weeks ago.
Fien began Spring Training in Detroit's big league camp last month before the Tigers designated him for assignment on Feb. 23 to make room on their 40-man roster for new arrival Johnny Damon. The Tigers allowed Fien to work out on the Minor League side for the next few days while they waited to see if he cleared waivers, so that they could outright him to the Minors.
The Red Sox claimed Fien off waivers March 1, but no sooner had Fien reported to their camp in Fort Myers, Fla., than Boston tried to sneak him through waivers, presumably to outright him. The Blue Jays, who didn't have roster space to put in a claim on Fien a few days earlier, claimed him on March 4.
Fien, who never took part in a workout with the Red Sox, packed up again and moved to Blue Jays camp. Two weeks later, however, Toronto released him.
The Tigers, who never really wanted to lose him in the first place, immediately had interest in bringing him back. A day later, they had a deal.
Fien will most likely open the season at Triple-A Toledo, where he saved 14 games last year to go along with a 2-1 record, 3.41 ERA and 66 strikeouts over 58 innings. He could yet end up as a midseason callup for the Tigers if they need relief depth.

Sweet, well we are back to where we should be. Fien should be our lottery ticket to scratch off and see if we won anything. Can't let Boston just steal that for free, and they very nearly did.

Casey Fien, RHP: The poor guy who was cut by the Tigers, sent to Boston, sent to Toronto, and who a couple of weeks after being released by Detroit ended back up in Tigers camp, has made the most of his pillar-to-post kickings: In 14 games for the Mud Hens, Fien, who is only 26, has a 1.64 ERA. He has allowed only nine hits and four walks in 14 2/3 innings.

Re: Detroit keeps on losing players off waivers !!!
Change the Title of this thread to "kellmellus50 will track Fien for the rest of his life".
Its nice to see him doing well, I still think its funny that the Tigers "lost" him in Early March. He went to 2 different organizations and was back with the Tigers before March ended. Which initially prompted this thread.
Freddy Dolsi is in the minors (Triple AAA with Chicago) and has a 5.09 era.
Chad Durbin is actually having a solid season. Of course he was someone the Tigers just couldn't keep. Its not like they didn't think anything of him and now hes some great middle revliever.
