Re: Filling out the roster for next season
First of all I really really hate to think about next season when we still have a ring to win which is the reason why I tried to avoid this thread as much as possible.
However Shannon Brown is not and will never be a PG. His handles are too weak to do it on a consistent basis and even his game play has regressed to the level that you can understand why he roamed around the league before coming here even with all athleticism. His ball stalling on offense and ill advised shots are half the reason the second unit struggles most of the time. Now he's even starting to do that while playing next to the starters.
If he sticks around for what he's making right now, good. Else, good riddance and good luck getting paid like Ariza. I'd be more encouraged paying that money for Farmar, knowing what I do now which isn't saying a lot. I'd much rather have Sasha be our starting PG.
There are other options if we do wish to spend the MLE and if we win a 2nd consecutive championship, we will have our choice of veteran role players to pick from.

im all for bring in Crittenton (he still has loads of potential, as a lot of wizards fans missed him because he knew how to run the point correctly)...Foye and Miller are also nice additions.
my order would be
Hinrich
Miller
Critt/Foye

Re: Filling out the roster for next season
I really like Watson, but dunno if we will be able to afford him.
Likely we may have to split the MLE to fill the roster out.. bad thing is right now it makes it really hard to speculate what we can possibly get because of the market this summer. A lot of guys are going to get overpaid by desperate teams that didn't get the big names. Its going to be tough pickins, Guys like Miller and Foye and Watson are not going to be easily had for small contracts.
I think we keep DJ and Powell, I believe we can resign without using an exception and they should stay cheap, dunno if anyone will throw money at them, but someone might. Brown will probably get an offer, dunno if we match it though depending on what Fish resigns for.

I would be really happy if this is what we can end up with. The fact that we get an upgrade at the point is awesome.
Raymond Felton / Derek Fisher
Kobe Bryant / Shannon Brown
Ron Artest / Luke Walton
Pau Gasol / Lamar Odom
Andrew Bynum / Pau Gasol

Re: Filling out the roster for next season
Both Powell and Benga are making 900,000 this season to resign them it may cost at least 1 million a season I don't think either of those guys are worth that much. The Lakers don't need to split the MLE to fill out the roster. The can use 4 minimum contracts to do that. One to this summers second round pick (Grizzlies pick), one to Gaffney and one to a guy like Elonu and one more to a vet maybe a Gerald Green or Livingston. The Lakers can resign Fisher easily because they have his bird rights and they can use the full MLE to get a guy like Foye or Felton

It's because he will cheaper that's why we might have more than one need on Lakers this summer because we might lose players to free agency. Oh and one more thing take your comment and shove up your asre.

Re: Filling out the roster for next season
When people say Foye is backing up Livingston its a little misleading considering the Wizards were blown up this season and their regular starting PG may be headed to jail for 3 months their trying out new lineups depending on the game Foye did start this season his numbers were pretty good. And whats to say the Lakers can't sign Foye and also sign Livingston in the summer. Also Foye may not be as cheap as some people think if the Wizards give him a qualifying offer he is a RFA and he'll cost most of the MLE, if the Wizards rescind the qualifying offer to him making him a UFA he could be had for at least half the MLE.

WTF.........
I'd say Miller is worth MLE, maybe a little more.... Blake is definitely NOT worth MLE... I'd say about 3 mil

Re: Filling out the roster for next season
Lot's of good points here guys...
I, like many other Laker Fans are tired of the Fish-Brown-Farmar PG Trio,
I think the Lakers #1 point should be to get the very best PG out there using up ALL of the MLE if needed.
Then I would bring back either Fish or Farmar, but not both, if the Lakers can't get a PG better than Farmar, they should try and use the MLE for the best SG, they can get get. Start Farmar, he will probably surprise a lot of people with his confidence and steals.
Powell, Mbenga I don't really care, but I would look to upgrade if they can.
Still try to trade Sasha and Walton, neither contributed this year. I would love to trade one of them to the Rocketts for Ariza, they just got Martin and may not need him...

The Rockets won't trade Ariza mainly because Battier is going into the final year of his contract and between those 2 Battier is more valuable more teams will be willing to trade for Battier instead of the remaining 4 or 5 years of Ariza's contract.

I saw its worth a shot anyway. I always liked Ariza even when he was in New York.

That would had been our team right now minus Foye still have Farmar if Artest had opted out in the summer of 2008 to become a free agent and signed with us. Then Sasha would not be here right now, and Ariza might had been resigned at a cheaper price.

I don't know how Arza would feel about coming back to LA and being a backup SG/SF 1 year after winning a title with the Lakers as a starter.

Re: Filling out the roster for next season
1. Rose
2. Kobe
3. Ariza
4. Odom
5. Howard
6. Hinrich can run 1 or 2 to rest either Rose or Dagger
7. Farmar or Brown (see notes)
8. Luck Walton
9. Kornikova
10. DJ, another 1 year contract?
11. Powell, another 1 year contract
12. Tough PF/C backup pickup

All gone: Bynum, Artest, Pau, Fisher, Farmar, Morrison, Brown
The numbers work, do I need to show the math
...
pau/d12 cancel out, same with artest ariza, kirk and rose for ab would include a sign and trade for brown or jfar cancels out, dfish gone, ammo gone, we keep shanny or jfar whichever chitown doesn't want. The snag would be ORL, we'd have to give them something else, maybe a three team trade, cuz AB would be more valuable than D Rose because centers are so scarce right? Maybe CHI helps us out with that offer. Sound crazy ?

u realise the league re-imburses teams that sign veterans because they cost more depending on how long theyve been in the league right??
this measure prevents teams picking younger (minimum) talent to fill out their rosters just because they are cheaper to pay and allows teams to pick up veterans at no extra cost to themselves.
or else why would teams pay veterans ~1mil when they could have someone younger at 440-774k (or w/e the min. is for them)

Re: Filling out the roster for next season
Either way at Powell and Benga's positions it makes more sense to sign young guys I mean we are talking about the 3rd PF and the 3rd C. Powell is gone because the Lakers liked Gaffney in the summer they just didn't have the room to keep him he'll be a nice project for the Lakers. And Benga well I keep hearing that he has terrible conditioning and he can only play 10 to 15 mins a game why resign a guy like that for a 1 million dollars a year.
