The reason for the hype about this guy is simple. How many 6'10+ small forwards are there in the league (not perimeter PF's)? It makes for one hell of a mismatch, if the guy can actually play SF. Vesely so far, is playing exclusively as an SF... Yes, he has a ways to go with both body development (he could really use another 3 years in the weight room), and skill development (yeah, he's shooting 45% from the three in Euroleague, but the term "small sample size" comes to mind); but so far, so good. He's also shown a really good attitude wrt to hustle, motor, and willingness to fight, even against bigger, stronger players...

SF's in the L who are 6'10+ : Durant, T-Mac (maybe), AK-47 (an inch short), Tayshaun Prince (an inch or two short...), Jared Jeffries (really a PF)

Even at the bottom end of that list, it's still decent, usable players...What is going to drop his stock is that he is under contract until 2013, without a buyout. Which team is willing to wait that long, particularly with the uncertainty of what a new CBA might do to signing him, when you will have to compete with Euro teams (Pathnaikos, CKSA, Real Madrid...).

Edit, Forgot about Hedo Turkoglu, who is a decent player, if a might overpaid...

He is an intriguing prospect in that he's a foreign player capable of playing above the rim but let's not get carried away here...

Does the truth hurt that badly?

Vesely might go around pumping himself up more than Amar'e and Smith but in terms of toughness he's on a few tiers below. In terms of athleticism he has a good vertical but not much of a long jump, so he's similar to Joe Alexander in that regard.

Don't even get me started on his alarmingly bad rebounding...

Amare is anything but tough.
If you want to try to measure the elements of basketball that are supposedly unmeasurable, spend a game just watching Marc Gasol.

You're right in that he's rather passive defensively, but offensively when he's taking it to the rim I'd have to disagree.

Amar'e attacks the rim with the type of fury and power that Jan Vesely can only dream of.

Basically, Ryan Hollins playing SF.

Just kidding.

I think the change from Euro basketball to the NBA will be hard for him. He'll be a long term prospect like Bargnani is/was. I wouldn't pick him in the lottery if I was a team desperate in need for talent or wanting to get back to the playoffs sooner than later.

I could see him being drafted by my Wolves with Charlotte's pick. He would be an excellent pick at like #16 or #17. Just like it's in Rubio's case it wouldn't matter if he came over right away or stays a year because the team is a work in progress.

Hmmm... The Jazz might, maybe the Bulls or a team like Portland/Spurs might trade up to pick him.

and what exactly more "risky" about him than any other draft prospect (besides maybe waiting 2 year that is)? the fact that he is european??? He is the 4th/5th most important player on a top 8 (maybe top4) Euroleague team.

that boy is frail. it would be shocking to see him maintain that level of athleticism he has after adding another 35 pounds which he clearly needs.

I read on draftexpress.com that Vesely's people are pulling for him to play in the NBA right away.
I am hoping we can draft him with Charlotte's pick(in the midteens) and using as a Small Forward.

from the footage ive seen of him, and last night i watched everything i could find hes definitally quick enough to guard small forwards. i cant see him as a pf though. size comparison wise he built like durant(just dize not game). hes very quick also and showed some decent ball handling skills.

His shoulders are wider than Durant's, so I think he'll be able to gain weight more easily.

On a podcast posted on draftexpress, Givony compared him to a taller/longer Omri Casspi with more upside. Like most here in the states, I can't say that I have seen much of Vesely myself. What little I have seems to indicate it is a better comparison than some of the others I have heard.
