A follow-up on Sonny Weems

Post#1 » by dagger » Sun Mar 7, 2010 12:07 am

Hey Nuggets fans, not trolling or gloating, just passing on some info about the evolution of Sonny Weems as an NBA player.

The Nuggets didn't need him and didn't have the time to develop him, and Denver is having a heck of a season (hopefully KMart doesn't need surgery). You're good to give the Lakers a run for all the marbles.

Still, I found it interesting that Weems has found an environment where he's been able to grow a little. Last night he had his first 20 point game (plus nine rebounds). Yes, it was against the crappy Knicks, but he put on a great two-way display. He does seem to be developing a better basketball IQ at both ends, so maybe George Karl's criticism last summer left its mark.

Anyways, for Weems fans, hopefully you'll feel good about his recent success.

His knock wasn't that he didn't have talent, he is a very talented wing with great finishing skills, who can run in the open floor with the best of them. What hurt him in Denver still hurts him, and that is his ability to hit the open 3. He is shooting less than 10% from behind the arc for his career, brief as it is, the numbers are terrible for a guy at his position. He also never met a pass that he liked, even though his assist numbers are up to 1.2 per game, it still indicates how selfish he is once the ball gets into his hands.

Lastly, where was he going to get minutes? Melo, JR, Afflalo, Graham, and even Balkman would get minutes in front of him with the Nuggets. I am glad he has found himself a home if he has, and he did have a nice game against the knicks. It would be nice to see him improve in the areas that are holding him back, but so far he hasn't shown that he can or that he is willing to do it imo.

Raptors and Nuggets are my co-favorite team so I've followed Sonny since he played here..Weems and Amir were a steal for the Raptors, I hope Sonny performs like that constantly..and yes, he needs to work on shooting the 3 this off-season...

I would easily have Weems playing PF than Allen playing PF.

This Raptors fan has been bothered by his blown assignments, poor shooting/shot selection and selfish play.

I'm hoping his dunks look good enough for some team to bite on an off-season trade.

Isn't Joey Graham on the Nuggets? I'll take Weems over Graham any day of the week.

I'll take Weems on offense (although Graham had some nice games offensively when Melo was injured) and Graham on defense.

Graham is so big, I was surprised when we first acquired him, a Raptor fan said Raptors had him guard Dwight lol... but it shows he got the bulk and physicality required to defend in the paint. He's also versatile enough to defend on perimeter.

Since both are role players, and Weems ain't no Jamal Crawford/ J.R/ bench scorer in that caliber, I'll take Graham. You want your 8th, 9th man to be able to play at least some defense. Weems can't defend a lick.

He played okay tonight against his former team, and the result was even better.

As a fan that's seen both Graham and Weems, I'd rather have Weems.

Well, looks like Weems earned a starting role for the Raptors.

The difference between Graham and Weems is that what Sonny brings is a dime a dozen in this league. You can find athletic wings who like to shoot anywhere. Not to say Graham is that unique and special...but at least he is strong, plays hard defensively, and can guard multiple positions. I mean hell, with Kenyon out, he is probably our third best post defender right now...maybe even second. Bird and Allen can't even guard Juwan Howard.

Graham at the top of his game is better than Sonny.

However, when Graham sucks, he really, really sucks. He's got no bball iq. I like Weems better on the Raps. If i'm a Nuggets fan i'll take Joey just because the nuggets are so deep that they can play joey in spurts and use him for what he's good for.

If Joey is playing significant minutes your team is likely really bad or depleted by injuries making you bad by default.

Weems has proven himself a consistent player. He doesn't just shoot from wherever he gets the ball. He has his "sweet spots" from the mid-range and he knocks those mid-range jumpers down really well.

He also emerged as a good defender for us. He can guard the 1 (he often did at the end of the season), 2 or 3.

Weems is younger than Graham, and has shown more improvement in one year than Joey showed in hisentire career.

Who was that that would rather have defense from Graham than Weems? Crazy as heck want to say Hell but i'm a pastor so i'll go with heck anyway have you seen Weems defend at all he's held his own against D wade and Lebron both as well as others but those are the most notable ones quit reading about his college days or even the fact that Karl didn't like him in denver and actually watch a game. Plus if you knew half the story about the three point shot you would know that Karl wouldn't even let him work on his three because he said they didn't need him to score just defend and never even let him do that. None the less avg or not he is still in the NBA and he is getting mins which is what you need if you're going to get better after not playing for a year which is what it boiled down to in Denver.

Did you really bump a 4 month old post to talk crap about a guy who was not good enough to get off the bench, and is now the 4th or 5th best SG/SF the Raptors have on their roster? I have to know if Weems and Derozan are so great, then why did your team go out and get a new SG and SF on good size contracts. If anything I would be a little embarrassed that your team keeps trying to get Denver cast offs, let me guess you want JR next? After all neither of your guys could get minutes from him over the last few years. Fact is Weems would not have got more then 10 mpg in Denver this coming year and would have had less last year, and will probably get around 5-10 mpg in toronto this year. In other words, he is not worth worrying about for either team, as you can find a decent 10 mpg SG/SF off the scrap heap for the minimum.
