I used to love the fire and fury of CBA call-ups, makes sense to keep that low payroll and a couple spots open at the end of the bench to try out call-ups to add to chemistry and mid-season energy as needed or to give a rest to injured players. If a player proves a nice fit, then you can likely ink 'em for a relatively low deal, especially if you see them developing offcourt and think you'd like to have them for a longer contract.

i agree totally. i just wish ernie signed reggie williams instead of mike harris. other than that i have no complaints.

Screw the draft...

http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/recap?gameId=300317009

Kind of amazing. I think this D League thing is catching on.

GS has three of them and they all played well.

Warriors Call-Up Trio Soars

Anthony Tolliver, formerly of the Idaho Stampede, scored 30 points in a 131-121 Warriors victory over the Hornets. Former Skyforce guard Reggie Williams added 22 and ex-Mad Ant Chris Hunter scored 17 points with eight boards.

Amazing what happens when some times you just get out of the way and let guys play. Not the way you want to run a team, but it worked for us post-trade for a small run now GS was able to notch a win that they probably would have lost otherwise.

The Knicks were calling up guys all of the time last year. You gotta leave a roster spot open just to see what talent may have slipped through the cracks.

Kudos to the GS Warriors scouts for finding Reggie Williams in the D-League, dude has been on-fire from the 1st 10-day and now he's been signed for the rest of the year.

I would caution that success in whack job Don Nelson's system in Golden State is not necessarily indicative of a player who would succeed in the real NBA. Don't get me wrong, Golden State deserves credit for utilizing the D-League to find talent; but I just won't be convinced that Williams, Tolliver, Hunter, etc. are legit NBA players until they can perform in a conventional NBA system.

I hear ya, but Williams is producing in the system that he was what put in. You also have to think in terms of value in this era of declining salaries, DeShawn Stevens made $3,886,928 this-year.

I think the future GM strategy will be keeping open roster spots for these D-League guys instead of paying $$ to fill-out the bench.

* Dwayne Jones

* Forward - Center

Ok, time to bring this guy up already.

10 games should be more than enough for us to audition him for SA

You may have blinked and missed the 5 games and 14 minutes he played for the Wizards this season. I think he was D-Leaguer of the week shortly after he went back. A second look at him could be a good idea.

*DOH* I believe Houston has already signed him. I totally admit to cruising the D-League stats for talent, evidently so did Houston :D

It says a lot about the current Wiz managment that we have not called-up a single player from our own D-League team that we share with the Grizzlies, it exist in name only. Well, at-least the Grizzlies are using it. Here is "our" roster if anybody cares.

You'd think GSW plays with a square rim or that defenses play them blindfold. It's not that different from the Knicks,Suns,Nugs and anyone who pushes the tempo. Plenty of guys HAVE played for Don Nelson at some point...yet failed to EVER get a 30 pt game or a double double. Guys like Reggie Williams and Tolliver may not ever be STARS...but for mid year rookies,they are playing VERY well.

Note....most of the undrafted D League guys DID play 4 college seasons. A One -And-Done like BJ Mullins does not have the combined college and NBDL minutes Chris Hunter has...so Hunter can PLAY in the NBA,while Mullins still can't. Mullins may catch up...may not.

GSW got Azubuike,CJ Watson,Reggie Williams from the "D" and each,when called up was #1 scorer in the D at about 25 ppg. Does not take real clever scouting to give a 25 ppg scorer a look. Each of those 3 had been a pretty good college player. Nellie traded or let walk,6 of GSW's former lotto picks...and a later #1 (Beli) he hardly LOOKED at the last few rd 2 picks. Guys who played more college years...have SKILLS...not just raw tools,are his comfort zone.
CENSORED... No comment.

old rem, I would rather see the Wizards spend money to get Reggie Williams than spend a lot more for Mike Miller or Josh Howard. Reggie Williams is legit. That guy can score anywhere for anybody.

I also think CJ Watson's a fine backup PG.

Unless the Wizards can build a team on the fly, I think it would be a good idea to have only 12 guaranteed contracts and use the other 3 spots to rotate promising D-Leaguers on the team.

The Houston Rockets are bringing in D-League forward Alexander Johnson for a tryout this week and are expected to sign Johnson for the rest of the season, according to sources close to the situation.
>SNIP<
If the Rockets go ahead with the signing as expected, Johnson will be in line to become the third D-Leaguer this week to receive a non-guaranteed contract for next season in addition to a rest-of-season deal. Denver (Brian Butch) and Miami (Kenny Hasbrouck) have also reached agreements on similar signings.

Eight recent D-League call-ups have already secured rest-of-season contracts that include team options for next season: Houston's Mike Harris, Golden State's Reggie Williams, Chicago's Chris Richard, Sundiata Gaines and Othyus Jeffers in Utah and the San Antonio trio of Curtis Jerrells, Garrett Temple and Alonzo Gee.

If it isn't already obvious, smart teams are looking to lock-up cheap bench-fillers for next year.

Edit: I believe Johnson was one of CCJ's guys a few years ago IIRC.

Actually, Johnson was a player that Washington was strongly considering taking the year they drafted Pecherov. Some were arguing Johnson was better than Shelden Williams or Millsap. That draft I recall posting Johnson's productions and stats paled in comparison to Millsap's, who I thought would also be much better than Shelden Williams. Williams ended up being a bust at 5. Johnson's bounced around. He's not a bad player.

In retrospect, had the Wizards drafted Johnson instead of Pecherov, who's to say Alexander Johnson might not be a serviceable backup PF today?

Looking back at that 2006 draft, Johnson got drafted at 45 and Millsap at 47.

Man, EG is really behind the curve. We could have locked up Gee & Livingston for next year for dirt cheap. Not only did we lose Gee, but I think there's a good chance someone will steal Livingston from up under us in the offseason.

Big-ups to former Wiz (who never actually played much) and NDBL MVP Mike Harris, his team won the NBDL championship at the buzzer.
