Draft Talk- Prospect Watch

Post#1 » by Manhattan Project » Tue Apr 6, 2010 4:46 pm

The Knicks will be armed with two top ten second round picks. We get the Clippers pick Via Denver Via the Balkman trade. The other pick we have is our own [Amazing]. Over the past few years many players have fell to the second round and have made a contribution right away. This year will be no different as this is a relatively deep draft.

Some of the household names that are being throw around here are:
Jarvis Varnado- Elite shot blocker.
Greivis Vasquez- Epitome of a combo guard, gamer.
Sherron Collins- Tough, strong and small point guard.
Stanley Robinson- Elite length and athleticism.

Possible big names that can fall:
Devin Ebanks- Excellent defender who should be in a fast paced system. Combo forward played in the slow as molasses system that was West Virgina's.
Terrico White- Combo guard that has a excellent shot, excellent mid range game. Instant offense.
Willie Warren- Last year would have been a lottery pick, this year dissipated. Injured all year long combined with reckless shot selection. Instant offense off the bench.

Lesser Known names thrown out there:
Kenneth Faried- Power forward that has a knack for the ball like Blair. Can run the floor pretty well, limited offensive game.
Charles Garcia- Pending on when you caught him, you could have seen him beast or suck. He gets to the free throw line a lot, turns it over a lot. Played at a small school, so it's hard to really know. Really goes out there to get his.
Quincy Pondexter- Had a good tournament, yet no one ever really talks about him. Most know his teammate Isaiah Thomas though. Pondexter is a senior who plays real good defense, efficient on offense and has improved his shot throughout the years.
Jazz: Under reconstruction, we'll be back.
C- Maluach l Jackson l Hayes
PF- Okongwu l Newell l Salaun
SF- Wiggins l Bryant l McNeeley
SG- Thomas l Sexton l Okogie
PG- Murray l Collier l Dillingham

Jimmer Freddtte-Can shoot lights out, is a solid passer and good play maker
Art Parakhouski-Run the floor,Block shots and a solid mid range

and with your list i would only look at Varnado/Grevis/warren...

NYK's second round picks should address needs...and reluctantly agree with/ look at Draftxpress and consider Tulsa's Jerome Jordan 7'0 Center; UVA's Sylvan Landesburg 6'6 SG (NYC product). If not then look De'Sean Butler.
Revolution starts in the mind...

Varnado is a must have. I've been high on him all year really. He had a little buzz last yr.

If he declares which he may not I would get a Levitra Boner for Hayward.

I would do almost anything to get Wesley Johnson.

There's also Butler, Craig Brackins, Clemente, Green, Sutton

In the chat yesterday, fans were asking who I would target if I were running the show. With Donnie Walsh shrewdly snagging a pick to secure Toney Douglas, he has already said he’d make a similar move if a player they were high on were there in the late first round.

I’d target Daniel Orton of Kentucky, who is said to test the waters after one year. Although Orton seems to only be considering it if he goes in the lottery, which he’s not projected to.
“…When asked how likely he was to enter this year’s NBA Draft, Orton said, “Hmm. You know, if I’m a lottery pick, it’s something I have to think about. That’s for sure…”

Orton is 6′10 255, and unlike Douglas, is very raw. As we know the Knicks need help-now players, but they could also use a young, strong, athletic big, and despite a modest freshman campaign statistically, I feel Orton fits the bill.

So too does Jonathan Givnoy of draftexpress who just tweeted:

“…Just finished my Daniel Orton scouting report, after watching every possession he played this year.I’m on the bandwagon big time. He’s good!..”
Where Orton ends up is anyone’s guess, but the Knicks may be able to jump into the first round with the likes of Minnesota, Memphis and Oklahoma City having multiple late first round picks coincided with existing young rosters. The Knicks can also use the pick, should it be attainable, to look for other needs such as shooting guards, but in the 20s it looks like there will be a bevy of big men to choose from. It’s shaping up to be a big-man draft.

I look at frame when talking about a prospect. Frame allows for players to compete instantly and develop. Orton is sturdy and athletic and is a legit 6′10, bigger than guys 6-8/6-9 who are in the 220-230 range. Obviously the big man has to be able to shoot as well, and I like Orton’s fundamentals. Bigs generally take longer to develop, but it’s clear that’s the most glaring need for the Knicks at this point, and one they will look to fill via free agency as well.

I’ve seen a bunch of these guys play and another young big I’m intrigued with is Hassan Whiteside of Marshall. No chance he’s around in the latter stages of the first round. I’ve heard he’s a bit mature and he’s VERY thin, but he did lead the nation in blocked shots. And he’s from Marshall…Mike D’Antoni’s alma mater.
As the draft progresses, these two players may be out of reach, but we’ll have to see. Seems like a deep draft for bigs.

Just a few post in it really shows how deep and such a wide range that we can go in. In just a few post we are up to twenty prospects thus far. Come draft time some of these players will out of the draft, but we are in position to land two players that can contribute. Sure it would be nice to have that lottery pick, but these are the cards we were dealt.

We can add two players that can play right away for around 800,000 and control them for three years.

Doubt Earl Thomas falls to the Jets. didn't he run a crazy time at his pro day recently? that pretty much puts him in the top 15

Im interestedin the acquisition at this point of players who can contribute. Even if they are staying in Europe for a year I want them to be ready to contribute when they do come.

Im over prospects and projects. Its time for IQ and professionalism.

Splitter and Vasquez are two euro bigs I really like. Its possible we could get their rights for a 2nd rounder. Slimly possible but this is NY and we do have a euro thing happening on the knicks right now.

otherwise Im into finding guys like Scola and Oberto who are simply workers

The Knicks need some defensive big men, not any PGs or swingmen. I've seen this Jarvis Varnado kid play, and he didn't look too tall to me. I think he was 6'8" or 6'9" MAX and was very skinny. If he's the best we can hope for, I hope they trade the pick.

I agree with you there, I believe there was a WT that stated San Antonio would never be able to bring Splitter over because of some financial mess. I hope Walsh can pull off a trade for Splitter's rights.

For college prospects I like Fredette from BYU, he's not as athletic as most guards but he's very tough. I am also interested in Brackens, never seen him play.

The best time of the year (since we haven't been a playoff team). Its time to rumble. The debates me TKF, Bluest, OP, SMAC-k and countless others were fun. Last year my prospect was Tyreke, this year is gonna be a little harder. I like Varnado, Vasquez, Collins, Ebanks, Lawal. Intrigued with Avery Bradley, Orton, Shved, Brakins, and Garcia. Of course there are guys at the top of the board I like really like, but i know we don't have a shot at them.

I am very high on Splitter as well. It seems though the only way he will come to NBA if he gets a starting deal at least at $4 mill or more. So he may be out of our price range.

I do like Jarvis Varnado, but there seems to be a player similar to him in every draft and they tend to not pan out in the NBA because they are too undersized for the C/PF position. Since we are talking about 2nd round picks thought, it would not hurt to take a chance on him.

I would stay far away from Grevis Vasquez. Too slow and not athletic enough to play the SG position let alone the PG spot.

I would rather go with a guy with more upside like Elliot Williams or Avery Bradley. In my eyes Williams is strictly a SG, but he can provide the ball-handling that we do not get from Chandler or Walker. Avery Bradley is similar to what we have in Toney Douglass but is much more athletic and explosive.

Another guy i would keep my eye out for is Luke Babbit. He is a 6-8 SF who is a great shooter. Not sure if he will declare for the draft, but he is a tough kid who will attack the basket, create contact, and go after rebounds. Will probably be strictly a shooter in the NBA, similar to Wally Szcerbiak, but it would give our team another great shooter to go along with Gallo. He doesn't get the hype that Singler or Hayward gets so he can slip to the 2nd round.
