Chris Bosh bashed in mouth as Raptors fall to Cavs
Flattened by an inadvertent elbow from Cleveland's Antawn Jamison, Bosh sustained a broken bone in his face Tuesday night as the Raptors, battling Chicago for the final postseason spot in the Eastern Conference, were beaten 113-101 by the Cavaliers, who have won 11 straight at home.

Bosh was accidentally struck by Jamison as the two jostled for position in the lane in the opening minutes. Bosh, who had blood dripping from his nose and mouth area as he was assisted from the floor, was immediately taken to the Cleveland Clinic for a CT scan.

Following the game, the Raptors said tests showed the All-Star forward suffered a "maxilla and nasal fracture to the right side of his face." Bosh, who returned to Quicken Loans Arena in the fourth quarter, will not travel with the team. Instead, he was to be kept in the hospital overnight for further evaluation.

Pistons 124, 76ers 103: Charlie Villanueva scores 25 as skid ends
Charlie Villanueva missed the team's charter flight to Philadelphia. He couldn't miss once the game started. Villanueva scored 25 points, Rodney Stuckey added 24 and the short-handed Detroit Pistons snapped an 11-game losing streak with a 124-103 victory over the 76ers on Tuesday night. "It's been a rough year for me," said Villanueva, who was 8 for 11 from the field, including 4 of 6 from 3-point territory. "But I never lose confidence in myself. It's just been one of those years. I'm not making excuses." Villanueva said frustration with the Pistons season and a reportedly heated practice environment Monday led him to post controversial comments on his Twitter account. Coach John Kuester reportedly became so upset during practice that he punted a basketball. “It was just me being frustrated,” Villanueva told Pistons.com in Philadelphia on Tuesday. “Venting a little. It’s been a frustrating year. It’s just one of those things that I wanted to vent a little bit.” Ben Wallace added a season-high 18 points, Tayshaun Prince had 14 and Ben Gordon 13 for the Pistons (24-53), who won for only the eighth time on the road this season. Jonas Jerebko added 11 points and Will Bynum had 10 as the Pistons shot a season-high 63 percent from the field. They also shattered their season high for points, eclipsing the 110 they had reached three times.

Detroit halted a double-digit losing skid for the second time in 2009-10. The Pistons dropped 13 in a row from Dec. 15 to Jan. 11. "Our guys made a conscious effort to play defense," Pistons coach John Kuester said. Marreese Speights scored 21 points and Jodie Meeks 19 for the struggling Sixers, who have lost four straight. Andre Iguodala and Lou Williams had 12 apiece, while Jrue Holiday added 11. "Too bad there's not a Phillies game or another (Donovan) McNabb trade to keep you guys occupied," Sixers coach Eddie Jordan said. "It was just a poor performance and no excuse." Jordan limited the minutes for several of his starters, including Elton Brand and Samuel Dalembert. Brand had a subpar game again with two rebounds in 12 minutes. In last Saturday's 128-123 overtime loss to Toronto, Brand went without a rebound for the first time in 713 career games. Dalembert (12 minutes) and Brand were criticized for their effort and defense by Jordan after the game. "He's the coach and he's the boss," Dalembert said. "He's not happy and we're not happy. I'm out there trying hard and hustling. I don't have a problem with the coach."

Detroit built an 18-point advantage in the fourth quarter when Jerebko's layup pushed it to 104-86.The Sixers never got the deficit under 10 the rest of the way. The Pistons were already depleted with injuries to guard Richard Hamilton along with forwards Jason Maxiell and Chris Wilcox. Then Stuckey limped off the court with 5:11 remaining in the third quarter after crashing to the court following a driving layup. Stuckey -- who was elbowed in the left rib -- hit the free throw, left for the locker room and was replaced by Gordon. Stuckey returned at the start of the fourth. In addition to Villanueva, forward Austin Daye missed Detroit's charter flight. They took commercial flights and arrived at the game in time. Both players initially came off the bench in the first half. "It's great to get a win," Villanueva said. "I haven't seen a locker room like this in a while. Guys are actually smiling."

Bosh taken to hopsital after elbow to the face
Toronto All-Star forward Chris Bosh is undergoing tests at a hospital after being accidentally elbowed in the face during Tuesday night's game. Bosh dropped to the floor after he was struck by Cleveland's Antawn Jamison in the first quarter. As play continued, a dazed Bosh got to his knees as blood dripped from his mouth and nose area. When there was finally a whistle, medical personnel from both teams went onto the floor to attend to Bosh, who was in obvious pain.

He was assisted from the court and taken to Cleveland's locker room with 9:52 left and examined by Cavs team physician Dr. Richard Parker. At halftime, a Raptors spokesman said Bosh was at the Cleveland Clinic undergoing a CAT scan and getting further treatment. The team said the right side of Bosh's face received the most trauma.

Bosh is averaging 24.3 points and 11 rebounds for the Raptors, who entered the game holding the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Toronto has a tough week ahead. After the Cavaliers, they host Boston on Wednesday and are at Atlanta on Friday. On Sunday, they'll host the Chicago Bulls, who trail them by one game in the standings.

Cavs' West out with back spasms; Varejao returns
Cavaliers reserve guard Delonte West missed Cleveland's game against Toronto because of lower back spasms.

With home-court advantage in the NBA playoffs locked up, the Cavs have nothing to play for and figured Tuesday night would be a good chance to sit West, who is averaging 8.7 points in 25 minutes per game. West has played in 57 of Cleveland's 77 games. Cavs coach Mike Brown said he will attempt to get some of his starters rest in the next week as the league's top team prepares for the postseason. Forward Anderson Varejao was expected back against the Raptors after missing three games with a sore left hamstring.

Brown said he doesn't know when injured center Shaquille O'Neal will return. He's been out since Feb. 25 after tearing a ligament in his right thumb and undergoing surgery.

Pistons use sharp shooting to halt losing streak at 11
Much to the chagrin of fans dreaming of a high lottery pick, the Pistons won't carry a 17-game losing streak into next season. That's because they snapped an 11-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 124-103 victory over the equally bad 76ers. The 124 points were a season-high for the Pistons (24-53), as was their 62.7% shooting. Charlie Villanueva, one day after missing the team flight, came off the bench and scored 15 points in 11 minutes in the first half and finished with a team-high 25. Rookie Austin Daye, who also missed the flight, scored nine.

It made for a lighter visitor's locker room at the Wachovia Center, but if you think the Pistons are better off with as many losses as possible, it was a bad night. Of the Pistons' remaining five games, four are against teams either firmly entrenched in the postseason or fighting for a playoff spot. The other game is at Minneapolis to end the season, so losing out was a possibility.

But enter the 76ers (26-51). "We just want to finish this thing playing hard, and I think that's what we have done as of late," coach John Kuester said. The Pistons ended a double-digit losing skid for the second time this season. They dropped 13 in a row from Dec. 15 to Jan. 11.

Pistons notes and quotes
What happened: The Pistons snapped an 11-game losing streak by crushing the woeful 76ers, who gave no pretense of trying to play defense as the Pistons blazed away at a 62.7% shooting clip. The game was tied at 61 at the half, but the Pistons started playing a little defense and outscored the 76ers by 21 points in the second half. Charlie Villanueva scored a game-high 25 points, Rodney Stuckey had 24 points and five assists, and Ben Wallace added 18 points and six rebounds.

The other side: Mareese Speights came off the bench to lead the 76ers with 21 points. Coach Eddie Jordan soured on big men Elton Brand and Samuel Dalembert as each played only 12:32 minutes.

Overheard: "This has been a tough year for me, but I never lost confidence in my ability, and it definitely feels good to get a game like this under my belt," Villanueva said.

Atlanta Hawks (49-28) at Detroit Pistons (24-53), 7:30 p.m.
The Atlanta Hawks have been stumbling as the visitor lately and will try to stop a five-game road losing streak tonight against the Detroit Pistons at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Atlanta continued to struggle on enemy territory and suffered a 109-100 loss at Charlotte last night. With Joe Johnson (sprained right thumb) and Mike Bibby (ingrown toenail) on the bench due to injury, Maurice Evans tallied a team-high 20 points and Al Horford added 16 and 12 rebounds for the Hawks, who are third in the Eastern Conference, just a game ahead of Boston. "It was tough. You just have to play with what you've got," Horford said. "Everybody goes through adversity, and we're going through it right now, but we'll bounce back from it."

Jamal Crawford and Josh Smith each had 18 points in defeat. Due to the Hawks' loss, the Orlando Magic clinched their third straight Southeast Division title. On the injury front for Atlanta, Johnson and Bibby are questionable for this evening's bout in the Motor City. Detroit finally put the brakes on an 11-game slide with last night's convincing 124-103 triumph at Philadelphia. Charlie Villanueva and Rodney Stuckey scored 25 and 24 points, respectively, for the Pistons, who also ended an 11-game losing streak on the road. "I thought Charlie played the way I know he is capable of," Pistons head coach John Kuester said. "Rodney Stuckey had some gutsy performances. Rodney Stuckey again, Will Bynum, Ben Wallace and Jonas (Jerebko) all played pretty much the entire game because they are all so valuable to us. Even though DaJuan Summers didn't play a lot of minutes, I still like what I saw."

Ben Wallace added a season-high 18 points, while Tayshaun Prince finished with 14 points and seven rebounds. Ben Gordon chipped in 13 points off the bench in a winning effort. The Pistons will now try to put the clamps on a five-game home losing streak. Pistons guard Richard Hamilton (ankle) and center Jason Maxiell (back) both missed Tuesday's win and are questionable for this evening. Atlanta has won two of three meetings with Detroit this season, but the Pistons are 13-7 in the previous 20 matchups between the clubs. The Hawks have lost eight of nine and 18 of their past 21 visits to The Palace.

About Last Night: The Philadelphia 76ers prove things could be worse in Detroit
The Pistons out-scored Philadelphia last night. They didn't out-defend or out-tough the Sixers, just had more three-pointers go in and shot a great percentage from the field compared to Philly's good percentage to the field. It's a win, and one that the team needed, despite the panic-stricken "OMG! This win totally sinks the Pistons lottery chances!" posts floating out there. But come on. No one wants to root for their team to lose.

The Pistons beat a lousy team, but at the same time gave a look at what they can be — a team that scores in a variety of ways, with slasher/finishers in Rodney Stuckey and Will Bynum complimented by Ben Gordon, Charlie Villanueva and Austin Daye hitting bombs from the perimeter, with Tayshaun Prince doing a little bit of everything and Ben Wallace and Jonas Jerebko providing hustle points.

The glaring need on the team is a playmaker, someone who can consistently draw attention of the defense and ensure that at least a couple of the Pistons weapons are involved every night. That can come in the form of a dynamic perimeter force or a back-to-the-basket scorer. But it's clear that there are pieces in place, minus that one very important component, who are talented and capable players. The future is not as bleak for the Pistons as, say, for a team that has about $50 million committed to Elton Brand, Andre Iguodala, Sam Dalembert, Jason Kapono and Lou Williams next season.

Two half point guards make a whole: The thing I like best about the Will Bynum/Rodney Stuckey backcourt is it stops the "we need a true PG in the lineup" banter. Bynum, because he looks like a point guard, seems to quiet the purists. But the fact is, when Bynum and Stuckey are on the court, they share those responsibilities, both take turns getting their own shots and both also take some of the distributing responsibilities (they combined for 11 assists and four turnovers).

The result is that both are engaged in the game, neither gets too wrapped up in getting his own offense or disappears as a result of trying too hard to get shots for everyone else. Throw in Tayshaun Prince, who's also capable of running the halfcourt offense, and the Pistons actually look pretty efficient with those three in the game at the same time.
