Re: Movie Thread -- Happy Stuff (Non-Wizards)
Star Trek was fun. The movie was well done but some of the action scenes just weren't necessary.
Best movies I have seen in the past year were Frost/Nixon and Grand Torino. Most movies I've seen I can only watch once but those were made with good detail and I can pick up interesting things watching them again.
I'm a fan of DDL but I refuse to sit through NINE. When films go into long songs it slows down the plot for me.

It's an alternate universe that's similar, but not identical to the Star Trek universe we've previously seen. The "old" universe still exists, but it's literally (in terms of story) in that other universe. The "new" universe was created when the Romulan mining ship and Spock came through the black hole created by the destruction of the Romulan sun.
But, as you say -- to each their own. I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to the next one.
By "annihilate" I meant they effectively destroyed it because once they've created this whole new 'universe' commercially, you'll very likely never see the 'old universe' again on the small or big screen.
I could not disagree more.

Star Trek was certainly entertaining - especially for Trekkers (serious) and Trekkies (regulars).
However, make sure you check out AVATAR - very good movie, especially in 3D IMAX. Like Titanic, it is a love story neatly molded into a larger conflict. Special effects are absolutely amazing and the alien females are hot!

Transitioning back to TV Shows for a sec.
I just watched all of Season 1 of "Sons of Anarchy" via Netflix and watched a couple of episodes of Season 2 online. I'm loving this show.
I used to see the promos on FX when it first came out and was very skeptical but I'm glad I finally started watching it. It's an excellent show.
If you liked the Shield as much as I did, I think you would dig this show.

W. Unseld, MJG, closg00 (and any other Breaking Bad fans) - if you don't know already, the show returns this Sunday. Finally.

Sweet! I just got season 2, disc 1 from NextFLix. I hope to be caught-up and watching the new season half-way through. Thanks for turning me on to the show bulletproof.

I work a network service provider and frequently I find myself having to perform work in the early morning hours to minimize customer impact.
On one of those occasions I broke down and caught a late showing of Book of Eli.
Not saying that it was a great movie, but it pretty much gripped from the beginning and didn't let me go until the conclusion. Found it to be thoroughly enjoyable.

Yes indeed. The second season just came out as well, I'm trying to rewatch it all prior to the third season kickoff.

Re: Movie Thread -- Happy Stuff (Non-Wizards)
I watched "The Blind Side" yesterday.
Man was it corny and the acting (aside from Sandra Bullock who, admittedly, was really good) was spotty but it delivered on the feel-good aspect it promised. I enjoyed it.

This one is good, highly recommended for those who like the books:

Re: Movie Thread -- Happy Stuff (Non-Wizards)
saw Kick-Ass on Friday. worth it for Hit-Girl. If you've read the comics, I will warn you that there's a bit of a divergence in the story between the two mediums, although apparently the movie was written and being filmed before the comic finished its run. Personally, I enjoyed the comics a bit more, but Hit-Girl kicks butt.

Saw this on DVD over the weekend. Certainly not a "feel good" movie, but quite compelling. Very well-acted.

Sin Nombre was awesome. After I watched it I felt horrible, and was upset at the movie, actually. But after I got over my emotions, I realized it was awesome.

"Godspeed" is a decent little indie flick. It has moments where it falls down. But, on the whole, it is well-crafted with interesting plot twists, character traits and monologues.

Re: Movie Thread -- Happy Stuff (Non-Wizards)
early word on Robin Hood is don't see it. anyone going to give it a go anyways?
i saw one comment on a review calling it 'Robin Hood - the Phantom Menace'. its supposed to be quite boring and filled with political 'intrigue'.

i'll be seeing it. Gladiator is my favorite movie of all time, so i'll be suckered into the Ridley Scott/Russell Crowe combo one more time (even though in my head it will just be Maximus Decimus Meridius reincarnated as a man in tights with a bow and arrow... which may kill the movie for me...)

Re: Movie Thread -- Happy Stuff (Non-Wizards)
oh, btw, semi-spoiler...
the whole movie apparently leads up to the actual Robin Hood myth, ie the story you know doesn't really start until the credits roll. sorta setting it up for a sequel. i guess that's another relation to the Phantom Menace jibe above.

Re: Movie Thread -- Happy Stuff (Non-Wizards)
I have been on a documentary and horror movie kick (netflix plus long flights).
Let's commence with perhaps the greatest documentary in world history -- and more of a religious experience. YOU MUST watch "What the Bleep?! Down the Rabbit Hole." If you allow it to sink in, it will hence forth alter your view of reality. The film gathers top quantum physicists to walk you through the breakthroughs being made in unearthing the very essence of reality. Gawk over the experiment where they prove that reality is built on a wave of possibilities -- and only collapses into place once consciousness observes it. Basically, all those after midnight, pot induced, quasi-philosophical ramblings that went on between you and your best friends in high school, now science is proving.
"Food Inc." is also a must. Witness how the food industry is greedily destroying the planet. You'll never want to eat again. "Gasland" demonstrates how the oil industry is raping our landscape, one community at a time. For those on the opposite end of the political spectrum, watch "Art of the Steal." See how Ed Rendell and his cronies, "for the good of the people," pilfered the largest, private art collection in the world (the 25 billion dollar Barnes collection).
On the horror movie front, "Let the Right One In" and "Deadgirl" are both novel and provocative takes on old themes.
