Per the ESPN Bottom Line, if that was the cost, can I ask if he was available and if the Bears should have maybe dealt their 5th or possibly a 4th to get him?
Gotta wonder if the Steelers know something.

I don't care if they know something, a 5th round pick is nothing for Holmes even if he is hurt. Angelo dropped the ball on this.

So I'm gonna go ahead and guess he's out for more than those four games.

This is a case of Pitt wanting to make a statement in light of the whole Big Ben/Santonio offseason of f ups. You don't get rid of your QB so Santonio had to go. Shefter is reporting its 4 games but with this being the last year in his deal they just made the decision that they weren't going to bring him back anyways. A 5th rounder is definately super cheap for a guy of his talent though.

If the Angelo/Smith regime claims to be in win now mode, they should have definitely made a play for Holmes to add a very productive veteran presence to our very young receiving group.
We need consistency, stability, and reliability at the receiving position for the Martz to become successful.
Based on the sample size of play of our present young receivers, we can not honestly project any guarantee of productive consistent performance from any of our receivers.
Homles could have been a reliable productive stabilizing force with Superbowl experience that to help take us to the next level.
A 5th pick for Holmes was nothing for a player of his caliber.
For us to take the next step, we need a proven #1 WR and Homles at that price should have been a no-brainer.

A plea for post scoring is a plausible Bulls plan, but plainly isn't a priority. In response to a post player's dismay about his lack of points in the paint, Paxson said.... "I'm not nearly as concerned about the offensive stuff as he is."

You guys do remember Tank Johnson right? and the incidents with Briggs and Tommie Harris?
I'm 100% sure the Bears didn't even inquire about Holmes because of his past, and definitely because of his future (4 game suspension).
I'm still hoping for Terrell Owens. Call me crazy. But a $3.5M guarantee, up to $5M incentive filled contract might look good to him. Especially since no teams seems to have much interest in him.
Keep the draft picks. Draft some O-Line for the future. And please, PLEASE no "sleeper" secondary picks.
