That's great. Give the C to a guy who nobody liked and got into physical altercations with on his other team that practically gave him away. The Leafs should have waited to see what the team looks like at the end of the summer before doing this. Maybe they get an insane offer to land another big name whose more deserving of the C.

Even with the current team, I think Kaberle and even Kessel should've gotten it before Phaneuf. They do a lot more for the team than he does.

Why didn't Kaberle get it?

Kabrle has a higher chance of being traded. It was down to Phaneuf and Kessel, they went with the supposed loud mouth guy.

Here was Wilson's quote:
We would have to make a megadeal to bring in the greatest leader of all time for Dion not to be named Captain'.
"I definitely knew he traveled, but I didn't know they were going to call it. That was one of them situations in which a great player made a move...and they called the call. And I was like, 'Oh, man, there is a God.'

Which is going to be a monumental mistake. Kaberle's the brightest spot on that team. You take him off and they're going to look even worse on the ice.

It seemed as soon as Phaneuf arrived, MLSE/Burke were pushing him to be the Captain so it's far from unexpected. But at the same time, there really isn't anyone I would name captain of the team. Dealing with the media is a major factor of being the captain of the Leafs and it seems that Kessel and Kaberle aren't interested in playing that role for the Leafs.

I am not the most knowledgeable Hockey fan but started to watch regularly last year. But isn't it quite strange that when the team started to play well was when this overrated defender joined and when kaberle decided to pack it in?!

You mean when they were mathematically eliminated and they were allowed to play a lot more loose and have more individual efforts? A lot of the bottom teams had upset wins at the end of the season because of that.

Not to mention every team plays hard after a big trade. I could care less, it isn't my team. All I know if I'd be pretty pissed if Phaneuf got named the captain of my team.

Though I'm not ecstatic he will be captain I can live with it because I do feel he has potential to be a good leader. He's vocal and leads by example, seems to want the role, works well with the media and has the talent/skill to be a gamechanger. That being said, his game has a lot of maturing to do and he could become McCabe #2 but I'll wait and see

He seems like a grab you by the throat sort of leader;

Should be interesting,
Of the entire roster (and that is not saying much) he would be the guy I would opt for as the one with the most leadership characteristics.

I don't have a problem with the choice.
It sounds like he's the type of guy who will hold his team mates accountable and he won't accept players taking days off or trying less than their best.

great choice for our next captain and pretty much the only one imo

he represents the kind of team Brian Burke is trying to build here: big, tough, hard-hitting
