Mavs vs. Spurs (Game 82+1)

Post#1 » by babyjax13 » Wed Apr 14, 2010 5:12 pm

If the Jazz are going to be the second seed we need the Spurs to beat the Mavs and for us to take down the Suns. I figured that since this is the second most important game for the Jazz this year it deserved to have its own "game thread".

The Spurs are playing for the 6th seed, so they have huge incentive to win just like Dallas. Tonight is going to be wild : )

Dallas owns the season series at 2-1. All games were decided by under 10 points and one went into OT....Why the f*** isn't this game on NATIONAL TV?

The NBA needs to have more flexibility with their TV scheduling like the NFL.

Actually, the Spurs don't have a lot of incentive to win this game. Here's a quote from a Hollinger article today....

Fortunately for Dallas, the Spurs aren't likely to contest the outcome. The Spurs will likely try to lose (or rather, "play the young guys") in an effort to avoid playing a Utah team they lost all four meetings against.

Follow the logic: The Spurs are currently the No. 7 seed and have a matchup with No. 2 Dallas if they lose the game. If they win, the Mavs are likely to fall to No. 3, but the Spurs would need Portland to lose for San Antonio to move up to No. 6.

If that doesn't happen -- and it probably won't, since the Blazers are home against Golden State -- the Spurs would be likely to face Utah in their nightmare matchup. And if the Blazers lost? The Spurs would face Dallas, making the whole exercise seem kind of pointless. They can lose and definitely face Dallas, or win and maybe face Dallas or maybe get a much worse outcome; I'm thinking they'll take the path of least resistance here.

The Spurs will be content to play young guys, rest Timmy, Manu, and Tony, stay in the 7 seed and play Dallas. Why would they want to go balls out to win, only to most likely stay in the 7 seed and draw a less favorable matchup?

I'm not sure the Spurs will just let this one go. We're kinda banged up with AK out and Boozer doubtful (we never really know how long he'll be out for). The Mavs have owned the Spurs for some time now. And also Ginobili has been crazy lately and Parker is getting back into shape. I'm not sure they'd rather face the Mavs than the Jazz in the 1st round.

I don't buy that for one moment. Just because we have had a good year against the Spurs doesn't mean that they dont think they could beat us with a resurging Manu and a healthy Parker. If I was the Spurs I would much rather face the Jazz than the Mavericks.

That isn't Pop's style of coaching either.

i cant imagine a team trying to get a lower seed. there is always a possibility you will meet the seed you could have had in a later round. if you dont have home court, you will be kicking yourselves knowing you could have had it.

that being said, i think pop will rest his stars for the playoffs. they wont throw it in, but they wont risk injury for this game either. pop has rested his players before. i say dallas by 8

You've got it mixed up. Assuming we win tonight, the Blazers and Mavericks need to both lose for the Blazers to be the #7 seed. Any other outcome (Spurs lose tonight or Blazers win) and Portland will be the #6 seed

John Hollinger is a complete idiot. Spurs will play their guys.

If Dallas wins, then Spurs fall to 7th and Blazers clinch 6th seed. So at that point that the Jazz would only face the Blazers if we beat the Suns. If we lose, the point is moot, and we get Denver on the road.

Spurs bench is all in except for Parker, while Mavs have all starters playing in the 4th, Mavs don't want to drop this one...
