7Ks = Pizza Pizza pizza?

Post#1 » by James Ready » Wed Apr 14, 2010 3:42 pm

Anyone been to a game this season that could confirm or deny?

I know this used to be the case not sure if it is around anymore... nothing is better than spending $11 for upper bowl and getting a free slice. That's a better return on your investment than some portfolios. :D

Thanks.

Pretty sure they don't have it anymore. Went last night and there was no sign of the promotion.

The Toronto Blue Jays sure are cookin' this season, and so is Pizza Pizza, delivering on its pledge of a free slice for Rogers Centre fans whenever Jays pitchers rack up seven strikeouts or more in a Friday, Sunday or holiday Monday game.

So far the pizza giant has had to serve up freebies for three out of four eligible occasions since home games began last month. And if the team keeps up the pace through the summer, Pizza Pizza may be forking over a fair bit of dough to baseball fans.

This doesn't worry the chain in the slightest, says marketing vice-president Pat Finelli. He calls the promotion a "win-win" situation, because it means the chain gets to pitch its brand to the Rogers Centre multitudes – and plate extra business at its restaurants.

"For us it's good," he says of the pizza payoffs. "And in these tough times, it's like a little Lotto for the fans."

He likes giving the home crowd an extra reason to cheer on the Jays' strikeouts of opposing hitters. And to claim their reward, "hopefully they go to our restaurants and get a slice, and maybe a pop and fries," adding: "We'll sell a lot more pizzas."

The chain's free-slice promotion started with the Toronto Raptors 10 years ago. Ticket holders can still claim a piece of pie the day after the team scores 100 points or more at home.

The tie-in with the Jays began in 2006, but Pizza Pizza wasn't out much too much pepperoni as Jays struggled to regain the glory they had had with their back-to-back World Series wins in the early 1990s.

This season the team is excelling again, but so far Rogers Centre turnouts have been disappointing. Attendance has averaged only 20,000 for the three home games that produced free pizza.

Finelli figures his company wound up serving $30,000 worth of slices as a result, with roughly half the fans trading in their ticket stubs after the game for a free slice at Pizza Pizza outlets.

If Toronto pitchers continue to throw third strikes all season and more fans pack the stadium, he estimates Pizza Pizza's outlay could reach $150,000 to $240,000 for the season – still only a sliver of the marketing-budget pie.

"It's less than 1 per cent," Finelli said. The freebie "just keeps the team momentum going. We want them to do well."

I dont think they have it anymore, but I thought you guys would find this interesting. Didnt think it would be that cheap.

I think it got cancelled this year, but to the best of my recollection it was only for weekend games, so the last two games don't mean anything.

Update - yep it still exists, at least for Saturday and Sunday games (I still need confirmation about Fridays).

I just picked up my free slice of overcooked cardboard and it was... free! The slice is nothing special but like Bob and Drew - the price is right.

Tip to fellow realgm'ers: Exploit the system. If you have e-tickets print them a bunch of time and take you family, significant other, coworkers, hell even homeless people out for a free lunch or dinner.
