Been a Nets fan since Kerry Kittles was drafted (1996), I've basically bled blue, white, and red ever since. But this season was by FAR the most painful thing I have EVER experienced being a Nets fan, in fact this year in general so far has sucked major balls. What could of gone wrong went wrong, none of the chips fell our way, and I just hope Prokhy can come in and restore a winning mentality on our team.

Well yes it was painful but not a complete waste.

Lopez - We watched this guy reform his game in so many ways. He still has more things to work on but the talent is there. Hi spassing improved, his face up game improved as well as a few other things. He is a STUD, we have our C for the next 10 years.

T.-Will - we saw flashes down the stretch of the guy we thought we drafted. His passing and rebounding is much better then expected and his jumper and decision making improved greatly in just a few months. Can't wai to see this guy get an offseason. I think he is the future SF (he's is a touch to short) but his athletisim is off the charts whcih will make up for his lack of a few more inches. I think this stat stuffer is our future SF.

The rest of the positions are up in the air. Yi is nothing mor ethen a bench player, Lee has been inconsitent but I liked what I saw. Harris is gone if we land Wall (which I really hope)

Wall, T.Will, and Lopez is a nice start for next year. We are going to need a lights out shooter to compliment them if Lee can't consistantly hit the open 3 and then PF is a huge need.

In the NBA if you arent a contender, better to be an extreme loser with a shot at a great draft pick than a pretender going no where and getting no help.

There was absolutely NOTHING that could have happened this season that would have made this a playoff caliber team. You had to expect this to be a losing season. So once you accept that...all you had left to do was accept the crap you get day to day from NON Nets fans for the volume of losing they did. But at the end of the day? Better to be us than the Knick with 17 more wins and NO FIRST round pick. Losing with nothing to show for it? NOW THAT IS DAMN SHAME.

Now of course a team that just missed the playoffs could get lucky with their 1% chance and get a top 3 pick. But, take our 25% chance, and a guarantee at no lower than 4th...add that to all the young promising talent we have for the moment, plus cap room, plus tradeable assets....and this season was the right way to do a rebuild. So? We had a to take crap from others...and watch our guys lose. In reality what you should take away from this as a young fan is...set your season to season expectations at realistic levels not wins and losses. Contender, or on the way up but just shy of contender, or pretender...or lottery team.

If you are a lottery team...are you rebuilding or just a failed season? If you are a rebuilder...to hell with record. Just get through the season...and onto the pick. Cavs had to do it to get Lebron, Sonics now Thunder to get Durant...and so on. If we get the right guy, perhaps a chance to sign a big ticket free agent...and you will forget this year very quickly. The best part of this...is if we dont sign a big name...we are still in line to rebuild from within. This season in reality went EXACTLY as we NEEDED it to for long term growth.

In all honesty the past 2 years hurt a lot more than this one, the past 2 seasons we were a go nowhere team that didnt even make the playoffs that's no man's land and in the NBA that is the worst position you can be in.
This season we always had the draft and cap space on our mind to keep us thinking positive, I mean look at Toronto, the epitome of a team that's in no man's land right now, I doubt any of their fans wouldnt trade their roster and assets for our roster and assets in a second.

I agree about tr he last two season thing compared to this one...however, I can put a positive spin on that as well.

First...its rare you can go from playoff team to bottom 5 team in one season. We three all star caliber stars on this team with big contracts. The seasons you mentioned were also about striping it down. Some teams have to wait for their guys to expire. Others, have to PAY someone else to make their big contracts go away rather than get paid. Give the team credit.

Kidd became a much younger All star PG (although, I would rather see him traded elsewhere) plus the 27th pick and immediate cap savings. Harris is underpaid per his talent. My traded comment refers more to how delicate he is (polite word), my hope that we land Wall, and that overall he just isnt enough of a PG for me, and certainly not a true SG either....but either way that was great value to receive for a player Kidd's age.

Carter became Lee...who wont be a star, but he is a nice young prospect with upside, worthy of a bench role, or possibly a trade piece long term.

And Rj became Yi, who hasnt lived up to what I thought he could be...but has had his moments, and is certainly a valuable piece to have for his franchise value. Lets face it....the guy's popularity makes him a cash cow which is never a bad thing for your team to have. He is an asset that is easily tradeable should we find an upgrade.


In addition, during those previous losing seasons...despite not having a top 3-5 pick...we got extremely lucky. You could argue Lopez at 10 is no worse than the 2nd best pick of his draft at this time. For me, Rose's lack of three point range, plus the value of a quality center makes Brook the guy to take #1 overall if we did that draft again right now.

And TWill? I rarely praise rooks. Those on this board that have been here for years and know how I think, know that I ham harsh on rook talent and often will crap all over the over excited unrealistic expectation of other posters. And his rook season was rocky at time. But I continue to be simply blown away by TWill's talent. Man, take those jump shots. Develop your shot, and learn to get to the line. If he just spends his off season shooting, shooting and doing some more shooting...and learns to be a true SG rather than an undersized SF who doesnt draw enough contract....he could be a STAR in the league. His talent for the game is off the charts. I expect he will get better with floor position, reads...giving his coach what is asked...but if he can add the type of shot to make people take a step back, he can be something special in this league. I have felt that way since last years summer league.

Bottom line...add all the prospects and stockpiled picks, this franchise has had a fantastic 3 year rebuilding period. if we do not land a big star this summer in free agency...I am personally prepared to go another two years of losing and then get back into it.

Given a choice? OK...go get me Lebron! But, if the big move isnt there...screw over paying for someone that isnt young enough to be long term picture...or not talented enough. Keep the cap room. Eventually someone will want the cash. Most likely...no later than two years from now when we make the transition to big market franchise.

we will never get the headlines that the Nix get. But no question we are the MUCH more attractive situation for a potential big name guy. We are stocked with talent to surround a star or two...or to make trades. To me the Nix are a hot mess. They can do so little then next few seasons. Although the cap increase was great for them. Now they do not need to but out Curry to get under for two max guys. Let him rot until mid season if they sign big names...and then trade him as an expiring before the all star break.

I agree with most of the post above, one thing to keep in mind though is that there is a limited window with cap space due to the fact that these guys don't stay on rookie contracts forever and how high the cap hold is on RFAs. It's a window that might be even more perilous now than in the past since contract have built-in raises while the cap is going down.

In the case of the Nets, looking at their salaries, their cap space window is this summer and the summer of 2011. The summer of 2011 is the first time you can offer Brook (and Courtney Lee) long-term deals and the last season before they become restricted free agents.

Even to keep that cap window open for 2011, you'll almost certainly have to renounce the rights on Yi (which some will argue is a good thing with the way he's struggled) since his cap hold as a RFA would be around $12 million.

I'm not saying they should necessarily spend it all this summer regardless, but just something to keep in mind.

At a later date, I'll have to crunch the numbers to see how much they can realistically spend this summer, while maintaining max cap space for the summer of 2011 in the scenario that this year's top free agents tell us to get lost.

I wrote you in the thread breaking down cap space for this year with some suggestions to better highlight what we CAN do. Take a look at it when you get a chance, I think you will find some good suggestions.

As for the future...no question with the new CBA looming and fears about dwindling revenues, anything is possible.

But, I urge you not to over think about who will get what in the coming years. If you have talent that is properly compensated, you can always make changes. Someone will want your guys...even if you just take a future draft pick.

I think we have spent way too much time talking about cap holds. When you can renounce something...its not that prohibiting. So? If you see better options...you renounce. Lets see how this goes.

I would favor dealing Harris for extra cap room and a player who fills another position who is YOUNG like a Marc Gasol. Also, Humphries wont be here long...there is extra space this year or next.

Dont worry. They are set up to make a move NOW...but if that big ticket free agent or two isnt there for them...they can still slow rebuild through the draft was my point. It just requires patience.

Young players are prosects....prospects who arent overpaid are worth more than their actual talent in trade value. We have chips to work with long term and short term is my main point.

The Knicks didnt do that. Regardless of what they tell the press...the only justification for making the move they made with Jeffries is they MUST land one of Lebron, Wade or Bosh...and they must have two big ticket players signed overall this summer or what they did was a joke.

They once again made moves that are all about a quick fix. If they fail to land someone now...how do you justify ensuring you have one crap 1st rounder from 4 draft classes? They gave up their #8 from 2009, 2010 is going to Utah, they will get the Rockets pick for 2011 (which I expect to be that crap pick I was refering to)...and then 2012 going to the Rockets again. You do that just to get an extra 6 mil in cap room for THIS season when the guy would have expired a year from now...its clear you have paid a big price to get what you are looking for this summer....and anything less is blatant failure.

That isnt the situation we are in. We sold big pieces and got prospects, picks, and we have kept our own picks...who have mostly been excellent pick ups (Lopez, TWill, CDR)
