It is believed John York is concerned about losing assistant head coach Mike Singletary to another NFL team. Singletary, who came to San Francisco with Nolan in 2005, is atop the Atlanta Falcons' wish list as they search for a new head coach.
As the team's linebackers coach, Singletary spent considerable time developing rookie Patrick Willis, who ended up making the Pro Bowl and leading the league in tackles. Willis credited Singletary with improving his technique and said he will value the coaching he received from the Hall of Fame linebacker if he leaves for a head coaching job.
Complicating matters is the fact that Nolan and Singletary are both represented by the same agent, Bob LaMonte. With Nolan set to return, LaMonte would be obliged to work with Singletary in interviews with other teams looking for head coaches.
As he left the facility, Singletary said he had not had any contact with other NFL teams. He said he and his fellow assistant coaches had meetings Tuesday but did not elaborate.
