Blue Jays acquire OF Fred Lewis from Giants

Post#1 » by Jmatt12 » Fri Apr 16, 2010 1:42 am

As per T S N

In a bid to add depth to their bench, the Toronto Blue Jays have acquired outfielder Fred Lewis in a trade with the San Francisco Giants, shuffling two other players to help make room for a player they believe has "a nice, solid bat."

Is it me or does every potential deal with have with SF seem like we're fleecing them (i.e. Rios for Lincecum).

Lewis is a half-decent propsect and I'm actually shocked that this would be going down. I haven't kept up with the Giants this year but unless they have a log-jam in the OF or they're getting a sweet deal, I don't understand this for them.

The question I'm wondering is what did we give up. Hopefully not too much.

Also I just heard on Sportsnet that Dustin Mcgowan has been moved from the 15 day DL to the 60 day DL

also...

Anthopoulos and Gaston both say that Lewis will come off the bench for Jays. "We're commited to our outfielders," said AA.

According to Bastian, Reed sent to AAA and McGowan to the 60 day DL to make roster room. Lewis broke the news on his twitter account, AA said they were going to announce it after the game but apparently Lewis was excited lol

Great deal for the jays.

Lewis is 29 years old, he's no prospect, but this is a good trade for the Jays.

One would hope that he platoons with Jose Bautista, starting tomorrow. Between the two of them, you have a pretty good outfielder. But if you let Bautista continue to face righties or Lewis face lefties, that's where we'll run into problems.

Oh well, I got my hopes up there for a few seconds. But I really shouldn't have expected anything from a team that doesn't platoon Lyle Overbay.

Can he play RF?

Might be a guy you look to platoon a bit with Bautista considering he struggles so much to hit righties.

Overbay is horrible right now.

He'll start hitting righties eventually, but there's no reason to have him in the lineup against guys like John Danks. That's ridiculous.

Joe Carter wasn't platooned, and according to you Lyle Overbay > Joe Carter.

No, he didn't say that... but go take a look at Carter's career splits; Joe probably should have been.

The people that think Joe Carter was much better than he actually was have always amused me.

He's definitely not a prospect, but he's a useful player. Good OBP guy, good speed. We had no use for him. I would have liked to keep him, but management is too stubborn to sit anyone in favor of him. He was having a ridiculous year with AAA Fresno. The best hitter on a team that included Buster Posey so far this year.

I still remember the day he hit for the cycle.
