I heard about what you're mentioning shrink, but the amount is so small, that it's likely not even a possibility.

It seemed odd that Zgoda would mention it. Let me throw some math at it.

Suppose we were willing to trade Gomes to a team that wanted to cut salary before June 1. the biggest deal we could take on would be:

$3,892,500 x 1.25 + $100,000 = $4,965,625

If we added Steimsma at the minimum and traded him with Gomes, it would be:

($3,892,500 + $457,588) x 1.25 + $100,000 = $5,537,610

So we'd now have the option of taking in a slightly bigger deal. For example, this deal would now work:

Sasha Vujacic + $3 mil cash + future LAL 1st for Gomes + Steimsma

In this case, the Lakers save some money by waiving, and we buy a pick. Not the greatest deal, but my point is that new options exist between $4.96-to-$5.5.

However, I would point out that if the guy is to be used exclusively as a trade chip, there IS a reason to give him more than the min. Suppose he got a contract for $667,500. That would fit perfectly for a team that really wants to save cap space like NOH

MoPete ($5.8 mil) + NOH 1st for Gomes + Steimsma + UTA 1st

If we see a number other than the minimum, it'd strongly look like something was up, but I've seen no numbers confirming his salary. Anyone got numbers?

shrink, what about the 60 day rule, though? Pretty positive Stiemsma can't be traded for 60 days, or at the very earliest July 1st, since he was just signed.

So maybe once free agency starts, sure, but I'd say this signing was 100% just to get his rights so we can have him on our Summer League roster with no one else stepping in first.

Salary cap news came out today, I guess. Sounds like it'll be at $56.1mil? That's GREAT news. Pushes up to close to 15-16mil in cap space?

Would this affect the fact that there are cap holds for any roster spots not filled? Or his salary essentially the same as that cap hold?

I know what you're all thinking, but if she went to Madison she's probably gained about 35 bills since this photo was taken.

Thanks for trying to cheer me up with the cap news, after stealing one of my trade pieces! Yeah, you're right - 60 day rule will be in effect, but that still gives a little time before the July 1 trade moritorium begins. You're probably right that its just to guarantee him on the summer league roster. but I always see new guys as commodities first, and players second.

You know some teams actually play the game, right? And you're correct that the 60 day moritorium actually comes before the draft. So your point does still work. My internal calendar is broke. In my mind the draft is like next week.

Pretty positive his salary is equal to the roster spot cap hold, so that doesn't change anything.

Rumor is that Kahn has promised Stiemsma a gauranteed two year deal worth seven figures each season following next season. If this is true it is a clear indicator that Kahn is looking to unload either Love or Jefferson.

So Greg Stiemsma is Kahn's Joe Smith? That's encouraging.
"A while back,'' Cardinal said, "I took a picture of the standings and texted it to Love, just to bust his chops,'' Cardinal said. "He sent me a picture back of a snowdrift.''

Anybody post this yet, from Ridiculous Upside?

http://www.ridiculousupside.com/2010/4/ ... tiemsma-in

Today, the D-League named Stiemsma their defensive player of the year, though I assume it was a rather close battle.

How close? Probably as close as their battle for the most blocks ever in an NBA Development League season: Looby swatted 166 shots over the course of 50 games to finish with a 3.3 average. Stiemsma, on the other hand, battled injuries in early December that limited him to just 44 starts - though he still blocked 162 shots for a 3.6 average.

Obviously shot blocking isn't the only thing that a player should have to do to earn a defensive player of the year award (we also had votes for Jackie Manuel and Renaldo Major), but when they were that good at it, it obviously makes it relevant.

My first place vote went to Stiemsma based on just one factor: his physical presence inside. Who wants to drive the lane to meet a behemoth like him when they could instead hang out on the perimeter? It wasn't solely the shot blocking presence, but just the formidable inside presence that he gave the Skyforce earned him my vote for D-League Defensive Player of the Year. It also didn't hurt that the Skyforce felt the need to keep him around despite his low point and rebounding totals.

Jon L's vote didn't go to Stiemsma (and therefore Looby) for the following reason: I didn't include Stiemsma because I think he too often just goes for the block rather than just playing defense, and so he ends up in foul trouble (I think you've made this point before).

At the very least he'll make Darko work everyday in practice.
