His prime was zapped when he had to cut over 25 lbs of lean mean muscle to face Tarver. He was never the same afterwards. He should have fought at cruiserweight after the Ruiz fight.

I really don't feel like defending him anymore because quite honestly... the last fight really left a bad taste in my mouth.

One of the great "What ifs?" in boxing history is what would've happened if Jones stayed at heavyweight to face Holyfield instead of dropping back down to 175 to face Tarver. If he had won, and he should have won, he probably gets remembered as one of the Top 20 greatest fighters ever.

Now, there are people who say he's overrated.

The thing about Jones which hurts his legacy is that he started facing the big challenges people kept wanting him to, after his skills had started eroding.

It's like running 30 miles a day for 10 years but only competing in half marathons and then, when you can only run 20 miles a day, you start running full marathons.

Dan Rafael's Notebook:

HBO and promoter Don King are discussing Aug. 7 in St. Louis as the date and location for junior welterweight titlist Devon Alexander's next fight, his manager/trainer Kevin Cunningham told ESPN.com. Alexander's opponent hasn't been determined. There were discussions that Alexander, of St. Louis, might face Marcos Maidana, who looked good knocking out Victor Cayo on HBO March 27. But Maidana instead will face titleholder Timothy Bradley on June 19 on HBO.

Golden Boy finalized another bout for the May 1 Shane Mosley-Floyd Mayweather HBO PPV undercard. Mexico's Daniel Ponce De Leon (38-2, 32 KOs), an ex-junior featherweight titlist, faces Mayweather protégé Cornelius Lock (19-4-1, 12 KOs) in a featherweight bout. Ponce De Leon has won four in a row, including a third-round knockout of Orlando Cruz in February, since Juan Manuel Lopez stopped him in the first round and relieved him of his 122-pound title in June 2008. Lock also knocked out Cruz in his last fight, stopping him in the fifth round on the Mayweather-Juan Manuel Marquez undercard in September. The co-feature between welterweight Saul "Canelo" Alvarez and Jose Cotto, brother of Miguel Cotto, has also been agreed to, but Golden Boy is waiting for Cotto's signed contract. A fourth TV fight is in the works.

Pacquiao-Berto?
http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/290387

Lou DiBella: "Now we want Manny Pacquiao. Whenever Manny wants to fight us, we are ready."

Personally, I don't think he's ready to fight either Pacquiao, Mosley (although I'm not counting what rust he may have after a long layoff), or Mayweather. I say test him against Clottey or Collazo to get the remaining rust off and for his skills to mature just a little more. Then there's the biceps injury he had last night.

Pacquiao's promoter Bob Arum says he is working on a Pacquiao -Margarito fight later in the year if Floyd Mayweather, jr is defeated by Shane Mosley in their May 1 encounter in Las Vegas. He said if Mosley wins he may not be able to face Pacquiao because of a possible restriction in their contract which would call for a mandatory rematch.
This leaves Pacquiao with few choices for his next fight which include, Juan Manuel Marquez and Edwin Valero of Venezuela and now Margarito and Andre Berto.

I called this. If Mosley wins, neither would fight Pacquiao until 2011 with the possibility of Mayweather exercising that rematch clause. Would Pacquiao be willing to wait that long to fight either? Does he take a final fight this year that doesn't involve either of them?

I would love to see how much Mayweather would protest the loss... even if it is a KO loss...

He didn't punch Mayweather. Mayweather ran into his fist.

Fantastic main fight, def. Two of my sentimental favorites, neither of which I want to see lose.

I don't want to see Miranda take any more punishment. Fighting Bute in Montreal, he's going to be murdered.

I am calling a Martinez upset... and a Bute KO....

Martinez is such a pretty boy, but he can fight. Hell does anyone think he looks like Wally Szerbiack?

Bute is one bad ass mofo... I want to see him vs anyone of the SuperSix.

Good call Rasho

The Bute KO didn't surprise me much as I think Miranda is done as a contender. I didn't know if Martinez could handle Pavlik size (wear him down) or power

Martinez was incredible yesterday.

When this fight was first made, I thought Martinez had a good shot to win because of his skills but as it got closer, I was starting to think that Pavlik might be too strong and people forgot how good he was at 160. The 9th round was something to watch. Just as you thought Pavlik turned it around, Martinez came back and completely messed up Pavlik's face with great accurate punches.

As for the rematch, I can't see how the result would change...this is just a bad matchup for Pavlik.

Hmm...I think if Pavlik held his guard up a little longer during Martinez's assaults, he wouldn't have gotten cut so bad. I saw Pavlik block the first two punches and Martinez kept going, using five, six-punch combinations. If Pavlik blocked or used his head movement a little more, there's a good chance Martinez might have gotten a little more tired and Pavlik could've held his own on a very close decision.

All credit to Martinez and his corner to tell him to throw more than those 1-2s. Just great ring generalship on Martinez's part also.

Pavlik gets hit far too often for an elite fighter... MArtinez would win once more in my opinion,
