NBA market size - largest metropolitan areas

Post#1 » by whoknows » Tue Apr 20, 2010 2:25 pm

Many times on this board most seem to get annoyed by the "ignorance/hate" that many US reporters show when dissing TO as a large NBA market.

Here is a list of largest metropolitan areas in US and you can see how much an NBA franchise spends/wins regardless of direct market size:

interesting to see Spurs having so much success in such a small market. Even more respect to Pops and management.

I find TO area at 5.3 millions, so we should be 13th on the list...
When talking about Toronto, our beat writers refer to TO as the 4th largest/populous NBA market - how come?

Don't forget that Raps games are not televised on US national channels primarily since Raps suck as a team. That could change if we have a watchable product on the floor.

If you're gonna do it the way they did it, you have to include much more than Toronto, or the GTA.

Thats around 8.1 million making us Top 5.

Hell, the way they're counting you should be throwing Buffalo and London in there as well. Plus, that Golden Horeshoe population is fishy, it lists the Kitchener CMA as 450,000, when in fact it is nearly 100,000 people larger. I wouldn't doubt that Toronto's market size, according to their measurements, is over 9 million placing us comfortably into 4th.

don't know, if you search under "metropolitan area", TO is under 5.6 mils...

gotta use the same statistics to be able to properly compare - just so we know what it is considered under "metropolitan area".

Any geography students here that could help?

The list you posted is not for metropolitan areas, it is for media markets - hence all of the listings including 3 cities. The media market for Toronto is larger than our metropolitan area, as it includes all of the suburbs / exurbs and Hamilton. If Toronto was on that list, it would probably say Toronto-Hamilton-Barrie.

raps4life's post is correct, if we were using the OP's methodology they would include the Golden Horseshoe, making us top 5

the metro population doesn't matter as much as the GTA one. because the market populations on that list are counting the greater <city> area of each of those cities. toronto is the 5th largest north american city after mexico city, new york, los angeles and chicago respectively. since mexcio city has no nba team, we are the 4th largest nba market.

Heres why thats not a good way of looking at it.

For Example
Greater Chicago is list at 24,814.7 km2 with a population density of around 500ppl/km2
GTA is listed at 7,124.15 km2 (less than a third) with a population density of around 770ppl/km2

GTA is considered much smaller in area than Greater Chicago. Does that mean that a city like Hamilton is not part of the Raptors/Leafs "market"?

A better comparison is the Horsehoe region I posted with a area of about 30,000km2.
