Top 3 Off-Season Priorities

What are the Top 3 off-season priorities for the Rockets, in your opinion?

For me it is:

1) Re-sign Scola & Lowry
2) Find a backup center/spot starter for Yao
3) Explore trading the 2012 Knicks pick & the 2011 pick swap

1. re-sign Scola & Lowry to reasonable price, i hate overpaying player
2. find a backup shotblocker center taller than 6'10"
3. explore trading Knicks picks and our 2010 lottery pick
4. get a 3rd pg for gods sake

1 - another defensive player in the starting lineup (sg or pf)
2 - defensive backup center 6'11+ or capable of defense
3 - trades


if we wanna be a good playoff team

1 - resign scola and lowry
2 - backup center 6'11+

there's no way this team is a contender w/ 25mpg of yao, scola starting, and brooks/martin starting backcourt. take it from phx u need defense to win championships

i dont think we should get a 3rd pg. if brooks/lowry get hurt, we'll just sign pgs to 10 day contracts, too much money gonna be spent next season, should only getta 3rd pg if someone gets hurt. wont be as bad if lowry/brooks go down next season, with yao back, team chemistry, off season additions, the team should be able to stay afloat.

Has no one learned yet that standing reach is >>>>>>>>>> more important than f*sking head height?

Ben Wallace is Carl Landry's height (or even a hair shorter) and was one of the best defensive centers of the last decade, FYI.
AND we have Jordan Hill, who in his limited outings with us seemed to show that he can fit that bill. (look at his march and april splits - http://www.nba.com/playerfile/jordan_hi ... plits.html )

It drives me nuts that the board as a whole can't seem to get a clue on that thing in the course of 4-5 years. We need to sticky a "WHY AN NBA PLAYER'S LISTED HEIGHT IS NOT IMPORTANT" thread (yes, in all caps)

we have an injury prone starting center who's also slow, why the **** would u want an undersized piece of **** backing him up? im **** tired of this undersized bull **** ****. in the playoffs teams take advantage of our undersized backup center or our old ass backup center. jordan hill is not a center he's a pf and it doesnt look like defense is gonna be his strength when he develops himself. and he's 235lbs, way too light for a center.

w/ yao in his 30s and coming back from a major surgery, this team cannot contend w/ a midget backup center. they can make the playoffs, but dont expect anything past the 2nd round, and consider urself lucky if we make the west finals.


contenders this year either have a legit backup center, or make up for that...

cleveland has shaq and z, who are old but lebron makes up for it
lakers have pau and bynum, along w/ kobe more than makes up for it
magic have gortat
if dallas is a contender they have haywood

those are the only real contenders. if we dont have a real backup center how do we make up for it? w/ our all offense/no defense lineups? not too long ago morey said yao might not be at full strength at all next season, which could mean 25mpg of yao. if this team wants to make the playoffs, they dont need a backup center. if they wanna be contenders, they got some work to do

Point's been made before about the injury-prone bit. If Yao goes down, we don't win. Simple as that.

The Jordan Hill comment was somewhat off topic. I wasn't trying to say we couldn't use a backup C, that was just me wondering if he could fill the role.

My main point was the height / standing reach subject, which people here seemed to FINALLY be getting before this season started, but now it's right back to "taller than a 6'10" midget". Look back at Kevin Willis (my classic example). I bet Shawn Marion can reach higher than he could. Probably Barkley, too.

Also, no one took advantage of Mutombo, dude was a monster for us every year other than his last one.

since they don't list players standing reach in their profile
it's whole lot easier just say taller than 6'10" than saying got standing reach higher than 9'2"

That's true, but it's also not just standing reach, it's "We gotta have 6'10" or taller" in general. If the guy can't play offense, people will complain. If he can't play defense, people will complain. If he's 6'10" and can play both, he's going to cost a lot and we'll likely end up with other holes elsewhere as a result of patching that one.

My problem with it is that it's a lot more complicated than "6'10" or taller", but it's easier to boil the only thing we need down to a single number.

We got Deke so cheap because everyone thought he was washed up for some reason (read: idiots). His offense was never as bad as advertised (though it was hard to watch, but it was still adequately effective). Those kind of bargains just aren't common, though...

The reason I brought up Hill is because sure he's only 235 now, but uh, plenty of guys have put on 10-15lbs in an offseason and improved their defense going into their soph years (especially when they didn't play for the first half of the season). Why would his defense need to be his strength so long as it's adequate and his rebounding numbers and scoring ability are good?

And he's 6'10".
