Sonny Weems or Demar DeRozan

Post#1 » by throwbackvault » Fri Apr 23, 2010 4:50 pm

I've recently seen a lot of trade proposals saying so and so are 'untouchables'. One if the names that pop up as 'untouchable' is Sonny Weems . I've also seen a lot of trade proposals that have Demar DeRozan involved in a package deal. This got me thinking...

Between Demar and Sonny, who do you feel could bring more to this team? If one HAD to be moved, which player would it be? A lot of people are down on Demar after his rookie year, and a lot of people are VERY high on Sonny. Why is this? Is it due to the last 10-15 games where Sonny stepped up? Or is it due to the high expectations that people feel Demar never lived up to? Or do people keep using Demar in a trade becuase his contract?

Here is my stance. First of all I would like to see both back in Raptors uniforms going forward. The idea of Sonny at the 2 and Demar at the 3 is very enticing. Their athleticism and speed would do wonders for this team on the wings. Of course one of the two or even both would have to work on their range and Demar would have to bulk up a bit to be able to guard other 3's. But the potential is definately there.

But if i HAD to choose one, it would be Demar. The kid has so much potential. Not to say Sonny doesn't have potential but I just feel like Demar's ceiling is higher than Sonny's. Yes, Sonny does play better D and can knock down the midrange with consistency, but these are areas that Demar can work on. And trust me, he will; the kid is a gym rat.

Anyway, I was just wondering what you guys think? Sonny Weems or Demar DeRozan?

Why are people so disappointed in DeMar?

DeMar is 2/3 years younger, but I don't like these kinds of hypotheticals so I'm not going to answer :p

Neither of them are untouchable. They are just two small glimmers of hope (along with Amir) in this sad sack of a team.

there are a lot more questions being raise in this thread than the one you chose to ignore.

DeMar solely on the fact that he's 3 years younger.

DD

I worry that Weems falls in love with his offense at the expense of his defense and turns into Von Wafer.

Weems is a better athlete, DeRozan is a better prospect. I'd like Weems longterm in a Vinnie Johnson scoring role off the bench. DeRozan has potential to be an above-average 2way guard.

DeRozan scored at a higher rate and with more efficiency this year than Chris Bosh did in his rookie season. I'm not down on him at all.

DD.

His biggest strength in college was his mastery of mid-range jumper. We didnt see that this season. His role this season was to penetrate the basket. It kinda of suprised me a lot that his penetration and dribble skills is better than what the draft report indicated. Draftexpress said that he cant beat his man to save his life.

Too early to tell really. If I was forced to pick one guy I'd probably pick Demar (due to age and the fact that he was a highly touted prospect since HS) although Sonny's game is a bit more refined at this early stage.

Why do Raptor fans always have to make it one or the other?

Between Demar and Sonny, who do you feel could bring more to this team? If one HAD to be moved, which player would it be? A lot of people are down on Demar after his rookie year, and a lot of people are VERY high on Sonny. Why is this? Is it due to the last 10-15 games where Sonny stepped up? Or is it due to the high expectations that people feel Demar never lived up to? Or do people keep using Demar in a trade becuase his contract?

better yet don't answer. just stick to soccer

Jesus man relax. I read those. I don't HAVE to answer them.
Here I go anyways:
1) I don't know, that's a tough call. I'd say DeMar will in the future but I have no idea.
2) Probably because of Sonny's last 15 or so games. At least for me, because I'm not disappointed at all with DeMar.
3) No, it's not because of his contract. It's a rookie scale contract, those aren't the contracts we want to get rid of.

I'm skeptical about either of them ever making an all-star team.

Well in this case it's because their skill sets mirror each other quite well and while Sonny is more polished DD has more potential. Having 2 sharing minutes could seriously dampen both of there development and there 2 of our very few positive trade pieces we could offer for anyone

they are not really similar, nor will it hinder their growth, Sonny is more of a jump shooter/occasionally drives to the bucket, where as Demar mostly gets his points from the line/attacks the basket on most possessions.....regardless having two players battle one another with competition in practice can never be a bad thing, especially when they are young players looking to improve and grow every year. Neither will average more than 28-30 mpg next year and with wright not returning there is plenty of minutes for both
