Jimmy and SB are raising a valid concern.

Eh, I'm not that concerned. Having done projects on the PC board before, it's a pretty smart group.

Now what I will say, different people way the regular season and post-season in different degrees. I'm sure everyone's going to look at some other person's votes from time to time and bang their head against the wall. However, the same thing undoubtedly happens with official votings of this kind in any sport....I will make emphasize more than once that the regular season should not be ignored though.

Why not just vote on the regular season and playoffs separately?

People always want to know who the best players were each year - when they ask that question, they want all seasons factored in. As a follower of sports like soccer and tennis, where there are always major awards that factor everything in, it's always struck me as counterproductive to have the major awards being only associated with part of the season.

I wouldn't mind splitting up regular season, playoffs, and overall MVP. As mentioned when the best player on the title team is top 5 in the league it almost becomes a non question so it could become uninteresting in long spurts. From 91 to 07 the only year that's not already a lock is 04 IMO.

Those other sports have multiple major events, basketball has only the regular season and a much shorter but more important playoffs. You're going to wind up with very uneven results. If this board hasn't done a "True MVP"/Player of the Year thing before, I would suggest that. You know, re-voting year-by-year to create a list of who had the actual best regular season, regardless of "most valuable-ness". And then a "True Playoffs MVP"/Playoff Player of the Year instead of a Finals MVP.

Hey guys,

I appreciate your thoughts on this but I'm pretty set on the goal here. Apologies if that means some won't want to participate.

I do want to make clear, naming THE POY in each year is really only a small part of the benefit as I see it. The discussion generated is the primary goal - and by doing it this way basically nothing is out of bounds, so there's more each of us can possibly learn.

Secondarily by having the voting done Top 5, it means we'll have shares go to each player in each year. If you personally don't find b-r's MVP share leaders interesting, then this will be of no benefit to you regardless of what seasons we use. However if you do find that interesting, then doing it this way will create a set of information that you really can't get anything like anywhere else.

ABA will be included. So for example, in '76, people will be voting on the Top 5 players in either of the two leagues.

And so everyone knows, everyone who has asked to be included is in - and it will continue to be like that until I make the first year thread on Monday.

So what is the points distribution - Are two 2nd places better than 1 MVP and outside top 5 finish. How about 3 third place finishes vs 2 2nd's and an outide top 5 finish.

Planning to use the same point distribution that MVP voting uses: 10-7-5-3-1. Nothing else we come up with will be any less arbitrary - and doing it that way will give an instant comparison to actual MVP voting.

Doctor MJ, what do you think about also voting on five best defenders each year? It’s more difficult to determine, but very interesting ;)

don't think we could do both at the same time - determining the 5 best defenders each year would be a full time job and probably a lot more taxing than this.

I suggest that voting should start 2 days after a thread is made. that way people can establish their opinion after some arguments are already made. otherwise you'll end up with people voting right away and discussion having no impact on our ranking.

I really like this project.

I do think we need to include some more parameters than just top 5 if we are going to use the results in an all time ranking type setting though. For example; one player could potentially have had the 6th best season for 15 years straight and end up with 0 points in this project, while someone who only had one good season where he was 5th will be ranked higher.

However, for purposes of measuring year by year who had the best seasons, the format works just fine IMO.
