Morgan Burnett (SS)

*
Height:
6'1"
*
Weight:
209 lbs.
*
Arm Length:
31 3/4 in. *
Hand Size:
9 in.
*
College:
Georgia Tech
*
Conference:
ACC

Overview

Burnett has been extremely productive for the Yellow Jackets over the past two seasons. He is very active in both run support as well as defending the pass but also misses too many opportunities due to lack of effort, angles and proper tackling techniques. Burnett has good size and athleticism for the safety position which makes him effective in combination man and zone coverage’s. He is an instinctive player but takes too many chances which make him vulnerable to big plays at times. Burnett can bend to shed and ward off blockers but again is inconsistent in this area. His ball skills are good and show the ability to make plays in traffic. Burnett is a solid safety prospect that has some inconsistencies in his play that may concern some clubs in this year’s draft.

Strengths
Burnett is a prospect with a really nice combination of size, strength and athleticism. Was a very productive player in the secondary for Georgia Tech. Does not have any durability questions. He plays with good intelligence. Exhibits the instincts to come up quickly against the run and jump routes in coverage. Has very good ball skills and is comfortable playing in deep coverage.
Weaknesses
Burnett is plagued by inconsistencies with a few areas of his game. Needs to play with the same high level of aggressiveness more often. Takes inconsistent angles, can over-run plays and is susceptible to double-moves and giving up big plays in coverage. Is also inconsistent run support.

Between the Neal pick, and trading up for Burnett while passing on Griffen, I'm too stun to even function. This second day has sucked ass. Pass rusher please!

MrMichael_Smith: Several league sources considered him the draft's third best S.

He has dreads, he has to be good. ;)

Safety was a HUGE need, IMO. I'm disappointed we haven't taken a OLB yet, but getting Bulaga and Burnett give us depth in weak positions.

The DE seems to be depth for this year with the potential to be an impact starter when Jolly/Jenkins come up so we do not have to retain both of them. I bet he is also insurance in case something happens to Jolly.

I could not agree more....this team has allowed 2 major weaknesses to exsist...any good QB will spread this team out with 4 wide and systematically destroy them......they have basically drafted 3 back-up players and have left major holes in there defense....i personally do not believe this is a playoff caliber defense looking at there schedule.

Like I said this week, you can cross off anyone with character issues. I would have taken a flier on Griffen too at some point but he's got character flags. Thompson won't touch him, and apparently a lot of teams feel the same way.

Besides, Burnett is an awesome pick here.

Greg_A_Bedard

It's optimal in Dom Capers system to have two interchangeable safeties, not a free and strong. Burnett fits that bill. He can cover.

What did we give up? Our 3rd and a 5th? 6th?

I guess I just want to know how we're going to get to the QB next year. Secondary is irrelevant without pass rush. I just hope we're not counting on Jones and Poppinga to get the job done, and since we won't do anything in FA and now we're not picking until the 5th, that appears to be the cases.

Brad Jones? The very athletic rookie who produced sacks when given time on the field last season? Remember that guy?

3rd and 4th

I haven't looked at a value chart or anything but we did move up like 15 spots so that's probably about right.
