Can the Blue Jays survive in Toronto?

Last season, paid attendance was 1.87 million, a figure that Beeston acknowledges may not be reached this year.

“Ultimately, this team has got to get back up to the mid or high 2 million (range) to be fully sustainable and competitive over the long term,” says Eric Fisher, baseball writer for the North Carolina-based Sports Business Journal. He predicts attendance will slip to 1.6 million this year.

Richard Powers, associate dean of the Rotman School of Management, says Rogers Communications Inc., the media giant that owns the Jays and broadcasts most of their games on its highly profitable Sportsnet channel, will eventually cave to pressure from shareholders if business doesn’t improve.

“If attendance does not pick up, if they can’t find other revenue streams that can offset the decline in attendance, they’re really going to have to look at either selling or bringing in new money somehow.”

Fisher describes any talk of moving the Jays as wildly premature, noting that even the mighty Philadelphia Phillies have had up-and-down attendance.

But some die-hard fans are jittery.

Beeston acknowledges that Rogers has lost money on the Jays for at least the last two years. “But, why I downplay that, why I don’t want to talk about it, is that Rogers never complained about this money.”

He won’t say how much Rogers is losing.

The jays aren't going to go anywhere. 2 million plus people to support the franchise . Give the Jays a few years and the attendance will start rising again. They have a solid core of guys now and the team will only get better. It's canada only baseball team, i dought the province or even the whole country will let the team just walk on out of Toronto and back to the states....

The economy is still coming around and once that improves people will start spending again and therefore sponsorships will be coming back. It's just bad timing for the jays to rebuild.

go jays go

Rogers is actually making more than enough money to survive if you include TV Contracts and Revenue Sharing.People honestly have to let this attendance thing go, i don't understand what the big deal is. Rogers knew they weren't gonna draw well when they approved of this latest rebuilding plan, after 18 years of mediocrity, fan apathy at an all time high and the backlash from the Doc Halladay trade, these numbers are not surprising or unexpected at all. LET IT GO!

We haven't made the playoffs in 17 years and the franchise is still doing fine. I think we'll be okay.

I think Rogers will end up selling the team, but I don't think they will leave the city any time in our lifetimes.

They should think about lowering prices....start with a 80% discount for All of May( may be a huge discount, but people will probably show up).

If the team starts to do better, start increasing your price(little by little).

Jays aren't going anywhere.

They just need to win....like everyone else in their predicament.
Basketball is driven by three principles:

1) Movement 2) Application of fundamentals 3) Predictability
