He's started 35 games at left tackle. He's on the short side for that position but he's got long arms.

Don't hate the pick. I think that at some point Thompson really needs to hit on some offensive line players.

He played tackle and guard in college, so he fits the Packers mantra of being versatile.

I'm not opposed to this pick. In about 2 years, Clifton and Tauscher will be gone and we desperately need to start finding potential replacements.

Colledge and Giacomini have not worked out. Better hope 2 of Lang, Bulaga, and Newhouse can fill those tackle spots.

02/25/2010 - 2010 NFL COMBINE, ALL-COMBINE SURPRISE TEAM: OG - Marshall Newhouse, TCU: Amongst a relatively unathletic group, Newhouse, a former LT, could stand out. - Rob Rang, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com

01/20/2010 - EAST-WEST SHRINE RISERS: OG Marshall Newhouse, TCU: He lined up all along the offensive line this week, turning his man out of the hole, setting quickly in pass protection and generally out-working his man whether playing inside or outside. The 6-3, 326-pound former Horned Frog projects to guard at the next level, but scouts value his versatility to slide over to either tackle spot if needed. - Chad Reuter, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com

01/18/2010 - East-West Shrine Monday Practice: One of the more impressive performances came from TCU offensive lineman Marshall Newhouse, who lined up at both tackle and guard positions on the day and was effective at each. Whether taking on a strong defender like Kansas State's Jeffrey Fitzgerald on the line or moving to the linebackers, Newhouse showed nice footwork and strength. He did not always hit a target when getting to space, however, which is something for him to work on. - Chad Reuter, The Sports Xchange, NFLDraftScout.com

Another tweener offensive lineman. Hopefully we find a combo that works one day and stick with it rather than shuffling guys every two games.

The good news is that it appears they are going away from the zone-blocking, smaller type lineman and grabbing some big brawlers.

Agreed. I'm satisfied with both OL-men we've drafted just because they can maul defenders... such as Jared Allen (assuming they can stay in front of him).

Biography: Three-year starter at left tackle awarded All-Conference honors after his senior in junior campaigns.

Positives: Relatively athletic college tackle who projects to guard at the next level. Plays low to the ground, makes good use of blocking angles, as well as body positioning. Stays square, keeps defenders in front of hi, and controls them once engaged at the point of attack. Shows strength in his upper body and good hand punch. Quickly sets in pass protection and above-average skill sliding out off the edge. Gets after blocks, very aware of assignments, and works well with teammates. Easily adjusts or redirects to defenders and effectively picks up the blitz.

Negatives: Lacks overall balance. Exploited by nimble, past opponents. Not a true finisher.

Analysis: Newhouse has been a very productive college tackle with the skills necessary to play guard on the NFL level. He must tighten up his frame and add strength to his lower body, yet he has potential in a variety of systems at the next level.

Projection: 3-4

Tweener as in position? He looks like an athletic guard with good size to me.

He's big but he actually graded as one of the most athletic guards at the combine. Best 40 time and 3 cone drill out of all guards.

The problem with shorter offensive tackles usually is that they don't carry the requisite weight well enough on their frames to maintain quickness. But as you can see with this guy he may be an anomaly at 6'3-6'4 and 319 lbs. He has already proven he can be stocky but still athletic. So maybe he's an anomaly and the Packers got a steal with everyone else pigeon holing him as a guard, a position he hadn't been proven at previously. Much like was the case with Mark Tauscher, who has been a stalwart for the Packers at tackle for 11 seasons now.

More information:

- young senior, not turning 22 until late September
- rated best OL in the state by Dave Campbell of Texas Football
- TCU was 6th in the nation in sacks allowed with only 12
- no character issues I don't think
- has pedigree with four relatives having played major college or pro football

I like that they are trying to get more physical up front...good sleeper pick.
