Separation Skills - An above-average athlete for size. Can open up and run. Needs polishing with routes though. A bit tight and has too much wasted motion getting in and out of cuts. Can separate and run away from LB's and DS's vertically. Does not appear to diagnose coverage well and struggles to find open areas working against zone looks. Also needs to be more savvy wading through traffic and can get bumped off of routes on occasion.

Separation Skills - Hands are above-average. Usually catches ball away from frame. Inconsistent though when having to open hips to make catch when ball is thrown behind him. Secures ball in traffic. Flashes ability to track ball over shoulder.

Ball Skills - Has the second gear to stretch the middle of the field. Catches the ball easily in stride on the run and can get up field. However, lacks elite elusiveness to make multiple defenders miss in the open field.

Competitiveness/Toughness - Improved toughness from a year ago. Still questionable overall passion for the game. Will appear lethargic and disinterested for periods of time throughout contests. Motor runs hot and cold as a blocker and is not a finisher. Concerns about his willingness to go over the middle and do the dirty work the position calls for.

Blocking - Improvement in this area from junior to senior season but still inconsistent. Appears stronger on tape than junior film. Does a good job of getting into position and moving feet as an inline blocker. Not dominating though and struggled against upper-echelon of competition (Cameron Heyward OSU DE and Brandon Graham Michigan DE). Moves well in space to cover up defenders downfield.

He has a TON of talent.....this is JerMichael Finley 2010...but older....the thought of 2 TE sets with him and Finley could be frightening, good value for a #5, high risk very high reward.

Shrine Stock Riser: Andre Quarless (TE) - The upside is immense with this inconsistent tight end. Quarless comes alive in the fourth quarter by making a highlight-reel one-handed grab on a low Kafka pass. He later puts a double-move on a defender and gets open for the game-winning score.


East-West Shrine Game: Andrew Quarless (Penn State) once again showed solid hands throughout practice. On a rollout pass play Quarless showed that he is a willing blocker. The pass was checked down, and Quarless had to break off his route to find a defender. He was able to push his man out of the receiver’s path, and helped that play gain an extra 10-yards because of his effort. – Draft Guys (01.20.10)

I'm getting lucky because I thought I'd have no knowledge whatsoever about these picks going in because I didn't focus on prospects this season or watch much college football period, but the majority of these guys play in the Big Ten and/or were recruited by the Badgers originally.

Quarless is a good value pick in the fifth round, and I assume that was one of Ted's impetus, as well as Lee regressing with his hands of stone. Quarless moves very fluidly for a guy his size, has the ideal TE frame, can leap, times his jumps well, and has soft hands. Even with all those attributes he wasn't terribly productive as a Nittany Lion. I think that partially can be attributed to his deliverers however. Clark was a pretty good passer but he thrived with the deep ball and that doesn't benefit a tight end much. Robinson was a sub-standard passer so that didn't help his chances. I think Aaron Rodgers' strengths play to Quarless' and it will make him a better receiver as a result. He'll be good for collecting a lot of passes on a line after he's sat down in a zone, crossing patterns, outs, etc. In other words all the in-between stuff. To a lesser extent than Finley he should mismatch LB's, safeties, and cornerbacks. I envision him being the impetus for a lot of 2-TE sets. As for the blocking, I can't speak of it. But he should be a plus receiver for the Pack and that's good value in the 5th.

Edit: I guess a lot of my analysis was a reiteration, but I can assure you it was another independent opinion about him being a Jermichael Finley type and fodder for a 2-TE set. The more positive assessments from the outside the greater chance he pans out.

We are at the point in the draft now where teams will begin to take chances on talent. Quarless is a gifted TE with size, speed and very good hands. He spent most of his career in Joe Paterno's dog house before breaking out his senior year with 41 receptions. Put the tape on against Michigan if you doubt his value as a verticle receiver. If he blocks better, and works harder, he's a starter in the NFL.
