Yeah, guy seems like an athletic freak. With that size and speed he could be a huge receiving threat.

Hopefully he can keep himself under control.

That's his pro day 40. He ran a 4.69 at the combine, which is still good for a TE with his size.

This guy looks like a less polished Jermichael Finley. How's his blocking skills? I'd prefer a blocking TE to compliment Finley.

Packers coaches said his blocking was decent, but not polished...

This was my favorite pick of the draft. If he pans out the 2 TE set helps the receiving game but it also gives a huge boost to our pass blocking (chipping the DE) and run blocking due to the two additional blockers on the line. All of the scouting reports say his blocking took a huge leap forward this last year which is great to hear.

This could make our offense even more potent than it already is. Scary.

If he pans out we can line up Finley at wideout more often.

If he pans out we can line them BOTH up at wideout sometimes. He's even faster than Finley was coming out of college. I'm pretty geeked about this.

Article on Quarless

Green Bay Packers fifth-round draft choice Andrew Quarless has been interrogated about his checkered past for months.

Leading up to the draft, scouts and coaches poked and prodded the Penn State tight end on character issues. Since the Packers selected Quarless last weekend, he has been peppered with inquiries from the media.

Remarkably, Quarless has not displayed even a trace of defensiveness. He has patiently and politely fielded every question about his indiscretions at Penn State.

For the record, Quarless was cited for underage drinking in 2007 and faced a two-game suspension. In 2008 he was charged with driving under the influence followed by the discovery of marijuana in an apartment he shared with three other Penn State players that nearly got him kicked out of school.

Some skeptics can’t believe Packers General Manager Ted Thompson would draft such a character risk.

Quarless has heard the criticism and knows the naysayers are lurking. To his credit, he doesn’t make excuses and is willing to prove himself all over again.

“There’s going to be some people that are going to look at my past and really just kind of doubt me,” Quarless said Friday on the first day of the Packers' rookie orientation camp. “I just want to show everybody that I’m not that guy and I’m ready to play.”

That guy was 17 when he entered Penn State, and the combination of his immaturity and an early dose of college success went to his head. He eventually found himself on the wrong side of the law with a decision to make.

“It hit me,” Quarless recalls. “You’re not doing something right. You’re getting in trouble. There’s something going on so you really have to sit down, look in the mirror and really man up.”

Quarless grew up in a hurry, but it didn’t come easy. He had to convince Penn State coach Joe Paterno not to kick him off the team.

“I said, ‘Coach, trust me. One more chance. I won’t let you down,’” Quarless said. “He really took a chance on me. I appreciated it.”

At one point during his college struggles, Quarless considered leaving Penn State. But after receiving some wise counsel from a coach, he said he made the following resolution: “I’m going to fight through this adversity. I’m not going to transfer. I’m going to take whatever punishment I have to take, whatever I need to do.”

One thing he needed to do was quit drinking. With the exception of a pre-draft toast with his parents, Quarless has not consumed alcohol since March 2008.

“It was more for me just really re-evaluating the way I was living,” he said. “I was living a little bit of a reckless lifestyle and I saw what it had done to me. It wasn’t doing anything positive for me.

“It was something I chose to change and take out of my life.”

He became a designated driver when his teammates went out. He also tried to help younger players at Penn State learn from his mistakes.

“I kind of took them under my wing and let them know that I’ve been down that road,” he said. “(I told them) ‘You really don’t want to go down that road.’ It really was just more about being a leader.”

Quarless knows the atmosphere in Green Bay will be similar to State College, Pa., which can be a blessing and a curse.

“I know they do a lot of drinking out here, too,” said Quarless, who plans to stay on the straight and narrow path regarding alcohol.

“My body feels good,” he said. “I don’t have to worry about hangovers or stuff like that. That’s the good thing about not drinking.”

Quarless doesn’t care if his past problems made his draft status plummet. He said he would have been happy as a seventh-round pick. He sounds grateful the Packers wanted him.

“Just seeing the field, being around players, seeing my locker, it’s an amazing feeling for me,” said Quarless, who graduated in 3½ years.

Quarless is convinced his meeting with Packers tight ends coach Ben McAdoo at the NFL scouting combine is the primary reason he landed in Green Bay.

“I felt I had a great man-to-man conversation,” Quarless said. “We really just bonded.”

Their talk focused on football, but also Quarless’ character. McAdoo came away impressed.

“He was very forward,” said McAdoo. “He brought the things that happened in his past up to me and discussed where he was headed.”

Quarless and starter Jermichael Finley form the nucleus of a formidable Packers tight end duo that boasts size but can also stretch the field and give opposing defenses fits.

That prospect sounds exciting, but Quarless is keeping his focus on simply learning the offense. He looks forward to the day when his character won’t be questioned.

For now, all he wants is a chance to prove himself.

“It’s a new step in my life, a new chapter, and I’m ready to get it going,” he said.
