I just got a new apartment (well, I'm renting it out with some friends) and I'm looking for a good part-time job. I'm mainly looking at different restaurants now to become a server but I'd rather not work for a chain restaurant. Any suggestions?

You should add your approximate location, or the area within which you're willing to travel, along with your experience and what kind of gig (super formal, laid back, French, coffee house, etc.) you're looking for. Silver Spring and Arlington both have lots of non-chain restaurants that are pretty Metro-accessible, and DC is filled with the same.

Well, the apartment is in the Mount Washington area (not sure you're familiar with it since it's in MD), which is close to downtown Baltimore. Chain restaurants would be a last resort. What I'd ideally like is a very low-key server job. Mount Washington is that kind of area. However, a low-key restaurant has it's pros and cons. On the good side, it's a low-stress environment with a cool atmosphere. But most of the restaurants are very, very small, despite doing good business. They are rarely hiring so it'd be a stroke of luck landing the gig I want there.

What a coincidence Rent-A-Mod, I'm also moving to a new place. What does rent go for in the D.C area?
I've always wanted to move to a different state. I just secured a nice studio apartment for $750/month...utilities included.

No idea about the D.C area as opposed to Baltimore (where I'll be living).

But in downtown Baltimore, a 2br 1bath will cost you about $1,000 a month.

I'm moving into a 3br, 2bath apartment in a really nice area with 3 of my friends and it's going to cost $1,500 a month but we have cable illegally hooked up and the only bill we'll have to pay is BGE (Baltimore Gas and Electric).

Yeah, I don't know Baltimore so well, but I think Mt. Washington's near Roland Avenue. I've been to this children's book store (I think it's just called the Children's Bookstore) just off Roland, and think I remember some other stores and restaurants right around that area.

Beyond that, nothing comes to mind, but if there's a place that you really want to work at that has a low turnover, just keep showing up. When I was younger, I worked at a bar/restaurant that may have seemed to some to only hire people that knew someone that worked there, but sometimes they'd just hire whoever showed up when they had an opening.

Don't channel it so far that you get slapped with a sexual harassment suit.

This is basically a list of some places I like in Baltimore, so I have no idea what they are actually like to work in:

http://www.helmand.com/

http://www.razorbacksgrill.com/

http://www.helensgarden.com/V2/

http://www.cafehon.com/

The third one is real close to where you live, but might not be as laid back.

BTW, thanks for allowing us to get some of it out of our systems on D 'n' D day.

Yeah, I live in Columbia Heights and a studio apartment costs about $1,800 a month. Basically, if you live away from DC proper, rent will be cheaper. Or you could always share a living space like Miller is doing, but rent is generally very expensive in DC. I don't live in a studio apartment and I don't pay that much in rent, but that's generally what it goes for. If you want something cheaper, move out of the city or go to Southeast DC.

Philly could hire Doug Collins after firing Eddie Jordan. This is like some backwards bizarro world.

Lynam coached Philly before he coached the Bullets.
