Early look at 53

Post#1 » by Newz » Mon Apr 26, 2010 5:21 pm

I know it's early and camp hasn't started, but this is how I see our roster right now. Starters in bold.

QB: Rodgers - Flynn
RB: Grant - Jackson - Starks
FB: Johnson - Hall/Kuhn
WR: Jennings - Driver - Jones - Nelson - Swain
TE: Finley - Lee - Quarless - Havner

OT: Clifton - Tauscher - Bulaga - Lang - Giacomini/Barbre
OG: Sitton - Spitz - Newhouse
C: Wells

DE: Jenkins - Raji - Jolly - Wynn - Neal
NT: Pickett

OLB: Matthews - Jones - Obiozor - Poppinga
ILB: Barnett - Hawk - Chillar - Bishop

CB: Woodson - Williams - Harris - Lee - Underwood - Blackmon - Bush
S: Collins - Bigby - Burnett - Martin

LS: Goode
K: Crosby
P: Bryan

Like I said, it's early so other guys may surprise in camp/preseason and earn a spot over these guys. We also might sign/trade for someone. Anyone see it playing out different?

I'm guessing that Donald Lee, Bush, Hall, and Giacomini/Barbre (or both depending on training camp) are all gone. I'm not convinced they still like Swain too.

I'd be down for cutting Lee and carrying another OLB like the undrafted Knicky guy.

Mine would be similar. I think Lee gets cut and we keep a total of 10 OL. I also think we only keep two FB this year and maybe move one of those spots to an OLB not currently on the roster.

Yeah, I was thinking Lee might be gone and we might keep Colledge, add another OLB or something like that.

My list does only have two FBs. - indicates a break and / indicates being unable to decide between the two guys. :D

I think picking up Westbrook would be a good addition. I don't see anyway we go into next season with three fullbacks so there is definitely a spot open for him. I think Lee will be traded at some point as well.

I would like to add Westbrook as well. I'd also like to trade for Merriman. :)

Here's my first crack at it :) :

QB: Rodgers - Flynn
RB: Grant - Jackson - Starks
FB: Johnson - Hall/Kuhn (I think Kuhn is gone)
WR: Jennings - Driver - Jones - Nelson - Swain
TE: Finley - Lee - Quarless - Havner (I think Havner is gone)
OT: Clifton - Tauscher - Bulaga - Lang - Giacomini/Barbre (I think both Giacomini & Barbre are gone)
OG: Sitton - Spitz - Newhouse (I think Colledge will be here too)
C: Wells (Deitreich-Smith will stay before Giacomini & Barbre)
DE: Jenkins - Raji - Jolly - Wynn - Neal (I think rookie Wilson will be here too)
NT: Pickett (I think NT Torbino will be here too)

OLB: Matthews - Jones - Obiozor - Poppinga (I think Poppinga is gone)
ILB: Barnett - Hawk - Chillar - Bishop

CB: Woodson - Williams - Harris - Lee - Underwood - Blackmon - Bush (I think Bush is finally gone, maybe lasts until Harris comes off of PUP?)
S: Collins - Bigby - Burnett - Martin

LS: Goode
K: Crosby
P: Bryan (I think Masthay beats Bryan out for this year, Bryan on PS to develop NFL footwork)

Why would Havner be gone? He makes a lot less than Lee and was superior in his opportunities in spite of just converting positions. If he goes then all of the development we did with him would be pointless.

Colledge should have warn out his welcome a couple years ago.

I doubt we'll want to pay Harris to be a nickel corner AT BEST at his age and coming off a major injury.

If the draft reports are valid, they'll be looking at a different OLB to push Jones to depth. Hopefully Merriman now that he's more removed from knee problems.

Burnett I think will be a starter immediately. Only in sure run situations can I see Bigby being more of an asset. Burnett has better instincts and covers better. He's a better fit for the zone.

Pretty sure all the speculation about Havner being gone stems back to his drunk driving motorcycle accident, no one is even certain he will be 100% healthy and recovered from that by training camp even though reports are that he probably will be.

I don't see them keeping 4 TEs, and wouldn't be surprised if it came down to Havner vs Lee for a spot. The one thing Lee has going for him is he's a better run blocker than the other guys.

Lee is a better blocker, but he wasn't even adequate catching the ball last season and Havner contributes on special teams. That said, unless Quarless really stinks, it'll probably be Finley plus the two healthiest of Havner, Lee, and Quarless.

mine almost same except for
Barbre is crap & cut. Smith or rookie FA Campbell instead. (College is traded.)
Rookie FA like Knicky or Zombo will take Popp's spot & a vet FA (or trade) will fill your open OLB.
If he signs, FA CB Shields may beat out Blackmon

Agreed on Westbrook. That would be a good addition.

I'm really liking this draft (and undraft), because...

A) It should provide a huge increase in quality depth and potential on both lines.

B) It should insure that the weakest links (Colledge, Bush, Lee) are either removed, or left with significantly diminished roles.

Doubt he'd figure into anybody's 53 man roster, but Charlie Peprah re-signed today. Championship!

Every year I think we are going to cut Bush and then we don't because they say he's valuable on Special Teams. I've never really even seen him make plays on Special Teams period. Maybe a play here or there but not good enough for a roster spot. TT will probably end up keeping him though :(

i have a hard time seeing them give up much o-line depth after the way last year went down, but you can't keep 32 o-guards either. one te has to go, and they drafted quarless for a reason and havner is a good all-around guy to have, so i think lee is the odd man out--doesn't offer much to the offense anymore. bush and lee, one of those two probably gone, i'd rather see lee go but that's just personal animosity. swain is borderline useful---if some rookie or fa impresses modestly he probably gets his spot. i also feel we need a better return-man, and if one of these rookies (shields?) shows something there, i think an x-factor lineup spot can bump any one of those guys.

and those who were talking westbrook, looks like he's pretty close to signing with the rams.

That's not true. If you consider 1-2 special teams holding penalties a game useful then Bush is your guy.
