A Goodbye to Hoiberg

Looks like he is packing his bags to head back to Iowa to coach the Cyclones. Congrats, good luck mayor!

I wish he could have represented our team for the lottery. We moved up from 4th to 3rd with his magic teddy bear.

I think you should take Hoiberg's job...first question Kahn would ask in the interview is 'What do you know about Ricky Rubio?'

I know that he thinks Minnesota is too cold.

This is looking really good for ISU (I'm an undergrad there). Fred may not have much of any coaching experience but as we all know before he took over Mchale's job all he did was pretty much scout and travel around the country and world for that matter watching basketball. He is beloved around here and we also retained TJ Otzelberger, a way good recruiter and now we're retaining the "big names" we had coming in. I do think, however, that Freddy was doing a great job in the FO of this organization and props to him for that. Thanks for all you've done for the Wolves Freddy, and I'll be seeing you next year!!!

I hope we can get everything worked out with darko and send him! I would love to see him destroy his seat and start a tirade if we didn't land the top pick

I think the fact that Kahn became the GM made this a much easier decision for Hoiberg. He was kind of groomed to be McHale's successor, but the job was given to Kahn anyway. Maybe working under McHale didn't help his resume much, but at least Hoiberg wasn't a yes man.

I wonder if Hoiberg would've been able to keep Barnes at home....

Wow, sucks to see him go... Can't say I'm surprised though, he deserves a better role than we were offering him. Good luck Fred, ISU is lucky to have you on board with them.

Not unless he could have found a way to make MJ an ISU booster rather than a UNC booster.

Would also say there's a very strong chance Reggie Theus joins him as an assistant.

Technically we moved up. Chicago moved up to 1 so our draft position would have been 4th but we picked 3rd.

oh okay, I didn't know that.

in other news; I wonder if Cy32 will keep posting here now that The Mayor won't be in the FO anymore. I hope she'll stick around anyway.

We didn't really move up, we were the 2nd or 3rd worst team that year, but it is one of the few time our ping pong balls were actually chosen.

The expected value of the draft position was 3.6, and we picked 3rd.

I was just remembering that draft yesterday. Do you remember the two minutes of optimism we had, when they had the lottery show and we discovered we were one of the Top 3 teams? They went to commerical, and we dreamed about a chance at Derrick Rose. I remember when they came back, and Hoiberg tried to maintain a brave smile when they showed we got the third pick .. though you could see him slump. I wonder if he beheaded the sick boy's teddy bear afterwards?

Speaking of lottery luck, were we "lucky" to not get the #2 pick in that draft? I think it would have been virtually impossible to walk away from Beasley. In a consensus of major mock drafts, Beasley went #2 in 12 of 13, so that was a pretty big gap.

http://www.nba.com/draft2008/board/mock.html

Anyway, would we have still done the MEM deal with Beasley instead of Mayo? I bet we'd have said no, which would mean no Love, no Rubio, and no big cap space this summer.

I think most of us like the Mayo trade now, and that showed some trade acumen. However, did we "luck" into avoiding Beasley?

The first time I saw the guy, I thought, "Now there's a perfect fit for Ames, Iowa"
