LB's Comments On The Roster

Post#1 » by BigSlam » Fri Apr 30, 2010 6:54 pm

Like we all didn't already know, but right of our LB's mouth!!

http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2010/0 ... ching.html

We’ve got to make DeSagana (Diop) better. He has a lot of work to do because, quite honestly, you can’t trade his contract."

Then why did you make the front office go out and get him!!

First thing is we’ve got to make the young kids better. We need to find out about Alexis (Ajinca, who was injured much of the season), With Gerald (Henderson), Derrick (Brown), Tyrus (Thomas) and D.J. (Augustin) we’ve got a lot of good, young kids. We have to coach them up and evaluate them.

Maybe actually playing them might help???

"We have to make Tyson (Chandler) better. This will be his first summer in a long time when he’ll be healthy. That’s a great thing, so he can just focus on basketball.

On Stephen Jackson:

"I think…he needs to lose a lot of weight if he’s going to play shooting guard for us or small forward. At Golden State he had to play everywhere – play upfront at the (power forward) position. Now, as he gets older, the most important thing for him is to get lighter again. But he can play a lot of spots and does things you can’t teach."

-- On Jackson’s Alpha Male persona offensively:

"I tried to talk to him a lot about deferring to his teammates early so that they can make a shot or make a play. That gives them a lot of confidence. Then, late in the game, when (others) do have to make plays, the fact that they’ve been involved makes it easier.

"You want guys with that sense of responsibility, but you need to channel that in the right direction."

Good stuff, Slam. I think this is the end of season presser that got people hung up on Okafor being more committed to yoga and stretching than basketball, but he didn't make any comments that were too negative or easy to spin this season.

I think it's interesting he mentions "coaching up" the kids... that's such an LB thing to do and I think it's definitely his mindset and why we've made some of the decisions we've made while he's been around. It's no fun to have a super talented guy, it's much more challenging to take a guy with a lot of rough spots and polish him up to be a cog in the machine.

The idea of making Diop a better basketball player is, well... unbelievable. But if anyone can do it, I think it's LB... because if he leaves, we're sunk there. Anyway, I hope he commits to the summer projects of coaching up the kids and making Tyson and Diop better at basketball while getting the vets better conditioned and doesn't leave for Philly or LA.

No mention of Felton at all was telling?

IMO, Ajinca, Augustin, Brown, and Henderson have yet to show they deserve more burn than they're getting. You gotta play better, if you wanna play more.

More here on Flip, Henderson, Hughes, Felton, etc: http://blogs.charlotte.com/inside_the_n ... rence.html

"Personally, he's been phenomenal for me to coach. He comes to every practice, he tries every drill, he tries every game. Gives all he has,'' Brown said. "We all value that, but when you look at our financial situation, that's a decision (owner) Michael (Jordan) will have to make. I know Michael thinks the world of Raymond.''
Humble yourself.

?? Has anyone else perceived Jack's weight to have been a problem?

I haven't noticed his weight specifically as a problem, but he's definitely slow for a 2 guard. If lb thinks it's a weight issue and not an age one, I think that is probably something to be optimistic about.

Thanks ttf (I think, posting on the mobile) for posting the part 2. Good stuff in there. Doc, lb mentions the summer league and I seem to remember reading that we were going to have a team. Fingers crossed!!

I'm pretty sure as soon as MJ took over he made a statement that said we would be having a summer league team this year.

Is Lexy even eligible? He was already sophomore this year. I can't make myself to remeber what are the eligibility rules for NBDL and for summer league without mixing them up.

Great. Better than see Henderson in Wolves' jersey and UPS, which one was it, Utah?

I was a bit worried as we don't have any picks this year so right now we are not going to have any rookies from draft and I wasn't sure whether they want to invest just for henderson and Derrick Brown to get playing time (although we are having some free spots on roster for the next season right now too).

Doc, I think anyone can play in Summer League. D-league is for FAs or young players with 2 or less seasons of experience.

Walt is right. That's why the Griz are trying to get Mayo to play this year.

Darius Miles played in summer league like 6 years into his career. Juwan Howard could play summer league if he wanted to.

I'm going to get some heat for this but I would like to see Larry Hughes and Flip Murray back next year.

It works out if Felton leaves and DJ becomes the starter. Larry can play exclusively at PG and Murray can play at the 4. That might scare some people, but if the team can sign him at the veterans minimum, it's a better bargain than other free agent PG's and it's better than signing a guy from the D.

Having Hughes, Murray, and Jackson out on the floor at the same time would be epic.

If LB does stay t wouldn't surprise me one bit for us to retain Hughes at an ultra cheap rate and for him to be used as our back up PG to DJ with Hendo backing Jax at the 2.

Might not be that way after the trade deadline, but wouldn't surprise me if that was the way things kicked the season off.

Yea, if DJ is the starter going into next season, I wouldn't be surprised to see one of those expiring contracts used to get a PG. I have to say, Larry Hughes seems as good as many of the options out there and he's definitely better than the TJ Ford solution the team looked at before the trade deadline.

Besides, it's not like he has many options. If the Kings release you before you play a single game, then that should tell you something about the type of player you are. It's too late for him to go over to Europe for a few years to retool his game but he has a great opportunity in Charlotte, especially if Felton leaves. If he put in some work and was smarter with his shot selection, I could see him replacing DJ as the starter here. He's not a bad player, he just has this great ability to make terrible decisions.
