Kevin Kolb signs 1yr, $12.26 million extension

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Thu Apr 29, 2010 10:59 pm

Eagles signed QB Kevin Kolb to a one-year extension with $12.26 million guaranteed.
The deal includes a whopping $10.7 million signing bonus to get around the "30 percent" rule. Kolb would have drawn a longer extension, but the Eagles had to work around the uncapped year's restriction on base salaries jumping more than 30 percent. The Eagles are still showing a commitment to Kolb by bringing his salary in line with other premier quarterbacks in the league. Now signed through 2011, he won't have to look over his shoulder at Michael Vick when the hometown fans turn fickle.

I know it's only one year but seems like a lot of money for a still largely unproven QB. Don't they owe Vick like $8 million this season as well? That's $20 million for two guys who still have plenty to prove this season!

Vick is a waste of money IMO.

Thats alot of money for a guy who still hasn't really proven himself as a legit starter in the league.

I agree, but it is nothing in comparison to what these rookies are getting paid....I really hope that gets fixed

Kolb was great in his starts, and its only one year. Good deal imo.

It's a lot of money but there is an underlying purpose here: it is a calculated gamble by the Eagles that a new CBA will be reached and that the terms will make Kolb only RFA-eligible in terms of years of service and not UFA. They had to offer him a deal sweet enough that he would sacrifice the potential of a fatter payday down the road in order to remain in more control of Kolb's future. It's the same principle the Cleveland Indians used to operate back when they had Manny and Lofton and Vizquel and Thome and locked them up earlier to save more later.

I believe Vick is owed 2 to 3 million this year, not 8, but that's still a waste of money for someone who should be returning kicks and punts. Kolb getting 12.26 million for just starting in place for McNabb a couple games last season is a little ridiculous, but I guess it's kinda like a franchise tag. I'm sure Kolb will do fine though.

almost 7 million...

Vick also will receive $5.25 million for the 2010 season if he remains with the Eagles, including a $1.5 million roster bonus due by March 5, according to sources.
