CINCINNATI -- Kelvim Escobar’s season is over before it began.
The Mets reliever will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair a torn capsule in front of his right shoulder and will miss the rest of the season. Escobar, 34, has pitched in only one major-league game since 2007 and has been on the disabled list since the start of the season.
The Mets signed Escobar to a one-year, guaranteed $1.25 million contract last offseason with the hope that he would compete for the setup job in the bullpen. But that gamble quickly backfired. Escobar showed up to spring training with shoulder weakness and never even stepped on a mound.
